The Stories We Tell:
Stories are at the heart of the Neighbours system. It is the tales of your deeds that first draw your neighbours' attention, and they remain eager to hear about your latest adventures.
Every day, bulletin boards in the neighbourhoods across Middle-earth offer a fresh selection of Neighbour Quests. Some adventures will send you into danger or aid those in need while others are quieter, local affairs. Whatever path you choose, completing these quests rewards you with a new barter currency and, just as importantly, a story worth telling.
After completing your daily quests you will compile your experiences into a journal that can be shared with any neighbour visiting your home. Every neighbour reacts differently to the stories you tell. Some delight in tales of exploration, while others prefer quieter moments or acts of kindness. Choosing a story that matches a neighbour's interests strengthens your friendship while sharing one that does not resonate may slow your progress or sour your neighbour's mood.
Your neighbours do not keep their opinions to themselves! Their reactions provide valuable clues about the kind of stories they enjoy, encouraging you to learn about their personalities and tailor future visits to their tastes.
Personality and Style:
Neighbours have 21 personality traits defining their likes, dislikes, and interests.
Three traits determine the kind of tales they most enjoy hearing; for every positive there is a negative. Other traits describe their favourite material, colour, pastime, food, drink, fruit or vegetable, animal, and flower. The remaining qualities include 3 things they like, 3 they dislike, three things they really dislike, and one closely guarded secret passion. These traits influence every interaction you have with a neighbour. Not every quality carries equal weight, as some preferences matter more to a specific neighbour than others.
One neighbour may dream of exploring forgotten ruins, while another would rather spend a quiet afternoon tending to flowers or caring for sheep. Discovering these personalities is a core part of building meaningful friendships.
Each neighbour displays the qualities you've uncovered within the Neighbour UI. Unknown traits remain hidden until you discover them. Presenting gifts that match a hidden quality three separate times permanently reveals that personality trait, making future interactions easier.

Learning about your neighbours is a gradual process. Pay attention to their reactions, experiment with stories and gifts, and uncover new traits to deepen your understanding of who they are.
Gift Giving and Receiving:
Stories are not the only way to build a friendship.
Throughout Middle-earth, merchants in major settlements sell gifts in exchange for the barter currency earned from Neighbour Quests. Even more gifts can be discovered while adventuring. Wherever your adventures take you, there's always the possibility of finding the perfect present.
Like neighbours themselves, every gift possesses its own qualities. A carefully chosen gift that aligns with a neighbour's personality can significantly strengthen your bond, while a poorly chosen one may leave them less impressed.
Fortunately, friendships are forgiving. Although an unsuitable gift may temporarily reduce your neighbour’s happiness, you will never lose a friendship rank once you have earned it.
Gifts come in five qualities: common, uncommon, rare, incomparable, and special.
As gifts become rarer, they gain additional qualities. Common gifts contain two qualities, while Incomparable gifts may possess six or more. This makes exceptional gifts far more versatile but also more unpredictable since they have a greater chance of containing both qualities a neighbour loves and ones they cannot stand.
Every important quality is listed directly on the item's description, allowing observant players to make informed choices once they've learned enough about a neighbour's personality.
Friendship is a two-way relationship.
Each day you visit, your neighbour may have something to share in return. They might tell stories of their own adventures, offer the fruits of their labour, or, after travelling through Middle-earth, present you with an item they discovered that reminded them of you.
They may not always have a gift waiting, but they will always appreciate your visit, and simply stopping by helps maintain the friendship you have built together. In fact, a simple gesture like saying hello, will improve your neighbour’s happiness which may lead to more frequent gift giving.
A Deeper Relationship:
As your bond grows, neighbours begin sharing more than stories and gifts.
At key friendship milestones, they will invite you to experience important moments from their past or present through a series of personal story adventures. These quests explore the events, choices, and memories that shaped the person standing before you today.
Completing these chapters does more than strengthen your relationship. Each story reveals additional personality traits while uncovering the hopes, fears, triumphs, and regrets that define your neighbour's life. These are not stories about saving Middle-earth from overwhelming darkness. They are the quieter moments that define more ordinary lives. Through them, we hope players form authentic emotional connections with the people who live beside them.
As your friendship deepens, your neighbour's generosity grows. Sometimes they will offer simple tokens of appreciation such as crafting materials. Other times, they will surprise you with valuable rewards, including traceries and other treasured items they want to share.
