Housing has long been one of the most beloved features of The Lord of the Rings Online. Over the years, we have expanded the places you can call home, from cozy hobbit holes in The Shire to breathtaking homesteads overlooking Rivendell. Every home tells a story, decorated with the treasures, memories, and achievements of its owner.
As part of the pre-release offerings for The Wolves of Mordor expansion, we are unveiling an exciting new housing feature, breathing vibrancy and life to your home with the arrival of neighbours!
Neighbours connect your adventures to the people whose lives you have touched along the way. The Wolves of Mordor pre-order provides you with introductions to representatives from each race of the primary four Free Peoples of Middle-earth.
Having heard tales of your deeds, these individuals seek you out, eager to learn more about the hero behind the tales. Each will present you with a special item you can place on a housing hook within any of your homesteads. Once displayed, it serves as an invitation, allowing that neighbour to visit your home whenever you wish.
From Stranger to Friend
Your neighbours do not exist merely as visitors; they have lives, ambitions, and stories of their own.
Through conversations, gifts, and a new neighbour mission system, you strengthen your bond over time. Relationships progress through stages, from stranger to companion and eventually to trusted friends.
As your friendship deepens, your neighbour will invite you into personal story instances revealing more about who they are, what makes them unique, and why they sought you out in the first place. Along the way, you will uncover new insights into their likes and dislikes – you may even discover a secret dream hidden deep within their heart.
Developing a Relationship
When a neighbour first arrives at your home, they are little more than a stranger. Building a true friendship takes time and begins with sharing your adventures.
Each day, a mission board within a neighbourhood offers a selection of five special Neighbour Missions. These missions function similarly to the mission system you already know, but with a crucial difference: you complete them by sharing them as a story with your neighbour. Any neighbour can listen to the story of your latest mission, but not every neighbour will appreciate every story equally.
The kind of adventure you undertake matters. The objectives you pursue, the creatures you confront, and the activities you engage in all contribute to how your neighbour responds.
Getting to know a neighbour is a gradual process, and every action you take contributes to that journey.
Sharing Stories
At the beginning of your friendship, their personality is a mystery. They may hint that they are a homebody, prefering the comfort of safety and familiar places, or an adventurous person delighting in tales from distant lands. The most important thing to them is to learn more about the hero they have heard about in their travels; you.
Completing missions unique to the neighbour system, you will have new tales to tell, and your neighbour will be interested. The journeys you complete are not done for your neighbour. Rather, they are the seeds of your own epic tales, drawn from your personal journeys and brought vividly to life for an eager listener. When you share your stories, your neighbour responds in meaningful ways, reflecting how deeply they were captivated by your adventures, not whether they judged your choices or actions.
They understand that your path may differ from their own; they simply prefer certain stories over others.
Every Neighbour Has a Story
No two neighbours are exactly alike! Each neighbour possesses twenty personality traits shaping their preferences, behaviour, and outlook on life. Grimbal the Dwarf, for example always has seven traits common with every version of Grimbal. The remaining thirteen traits are unique to your Grimbal, making your friendship unlike anyone else’s!
A Living Companion
These traits influence what your neighbour enjoys, dislikes, or simply has little care about. Learning those preferences is the key to building a lasting relationship.
Your neighbor is far more than a static presence at your homestead. They are alive with personality. They react to your actions, your stories, and even the gifts you share. Through our dynamic mood system, they may express how they feel by changing facial expressions, evolving dialogue, and vivid visual cues revealing their emotions day by day.
As your journeys intertwine, they may share their pasts, hopes and dreams, and the traits that make each one truly unique. Grow closer, and you will earn meaningful rewards your neighbor can wear, lasting reminders of the triumphs and trials you have shared together. Every new adventure brings the chance to deepen your bond, turning once mundane interaction into a rich, evolving friendship.
