What is LOTRO?

The Lord of the Rings Online™ (LOTRO) is the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. LOTRO takes place in a persistent online world populated with real and computer players that continue to function even when you turn the game off.

Character Advancement

In a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMO, like The Lord of the Rings Online™, players are given the opportunity to create their fictional selves in a living virtual space. You can become anyone, have fantastic adventures, and maybe even save the world in the process; but even the mightiest heroes have to start somewhere.

The Epic Storyline

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most acclaimed literary pieces of the 20th century. The ultimate story of good vs. evil is known to readers of all genres, and inspires hope in anyone who has ever had to face seemingly insurmountable odds. This fantasy icon has acquired prestige not only for its story, but for the world that was built around the tale.

Legendary Items

The Mines of Moria expansion introduced Legendary Items into The Lord of the Rings OnlineTM. Legendary items advance by earning experience points. As you level, your legendary item can level as well. Legendary items can be reforged into more powerful versions of themselves as they progress.

Fellowships

Even the bravest, most heroic, or just plain crazy adventurer eventually needs a little help. A fellowship, The Lord of the Rings Online’s name for groups, is a gathering of up to six players working together to complete a task or take down an enemy.
