Because of the variety of alternatives: swan boats, pirate ships, time-warping Ranger boats, even an island from time to time. Going out an anything smaller works well enough for the desperate or fearless, in which case just about any old log or barrel will do, but one risks a great deal to fire-breathing salamanders, sorcerous snowstorms and of course that tentacled thing. But one of these days some adventurer will come along and, after a few too many thwacks to the head, look sideways at a shield, and -voila! - the Watcher gets a nice collection of dinnerware.
