How to choose a character to get endgame-ready (for new players)

New players (or those who've never done endgame content before) - I'm just going to shove a few lists of opinions and facts in your face to help you choose the class you want to level up.

Also, obviously if you like playing a certain class a lot, stick with it. (If you play warden, I'd recommend playing at least one other alt on top tho)

Also (2), keep in mind this was written during update 23, 12.04.2019. Things might change in future updates.

    Classes by End-game viability:

    1. Rune-keeper - You pretty much want at least one rune-keeper for every raid for the debuffs, but more is perfectly viable (in many cases best). You also have viable healer trait line.

    2. Captain - At least one red captain is pretty much required for most raids. Tanking captain is also a very viable tank, securing you spots for 3-man content as a tank. You also have a healing trait line for memes that might one day be viable.

    3. Lore-master - Most raids and many 6-man content essentially require one lore-master to be completed. Can well played lore-master can also replace a healer in 3-man instances, sometimes even replace the tank in some instances.

    4. Beorning - A very capable healer for any content, basically a requirement for certain raids (abyss 2nd boss), can also do a tank role

    5. Hunter - Top dog of single target dps, while also doing it safe from range.

    6. Guardian - You'll want one for most raids and 6-man content. Also perfectly viable for 3-man content.

    7. Minstrel - A very viable healer for any instance.

    8. Burglar - One spot guaranteed for most raids, but rarely wanted for smaller group sizes.

    9. Champion - Many raids have spot for at least one champion, but many of the instances are not very champion friendly.

    10. Warden - Viable for many content, but currently outclassed in both dps and tanking. Only saving grace for wardens is old items no longer available. In many cases warden is basically an inferior champion.

Classes by End-game gear/trait point requirements (from easiest requirements to meet to highest):

    Low requirements:
    Captain support
    Lore-master support
    Burglar support

    Medium requirements:
    Beorning healer
    Rune-keeper healer
    Warden tank
    Captain tank
    Minstrel healer

    High requirements:
    Guardian tank
    Rune-keeper dps
    Warden dps
    Hunter dps

    Very High requirements:
    Champion dps

Trait points locked behind expansions or quest packs:

    Helm's Deep expansion - 4295 LP - 7 points (5 from quests, 2 from epic battles)
    Central Gondor - 795 LP - 4 points
    Eastern Gondor -795 LP - 1 point
    Old Anorien - 795 LP - 2 points

All of the Gondor trait points are free for VIP. At least Guardian and Hunter are crippled heavily if you lack ANY of these.

Classes that have useful gear locked behind expansions or quest packs:

Far Anorien quest pack (optionally also March of the King and the Wastes):

    Captain support
    Lore-master
    Burglar
    Minstrel
Rune-keeper (can skip if using Mordor gear)
    Warden
    Hunter
    Champion

    Mordor expansion:

    Guardian
    Lore-master
    Captain tank
    Warden
    Rune-keeper
    Burglar

Classes by how difficult they are to play (player skill required to be viable):

    Easy:
    Captain support
    Runekeeper dps
    Runekeeper healer
    Warden tank
    Burglar

    Medium:
    Captain tank
    Minstrel
    Guardian
    Beorning
    Hunter
    Lore-master

    Hard:
    Warden dps
    Champion

So just to confirm, you are saying that a tank warden is not only easier to gear then a guard tank, it is also easier to play?

There are either situations where warden tank is a viable option, and situations where I think warden tank is simply unviable and another tanking class fills the spot in an instance. In the cases where a warden tank is viable, a warden tank is easier to play than a guardian. Once I see a warden tank replace a guardian for t3 Isvitha adds etc. I'll rethink this classification. I am not the most experienced about wardens however (mostly because they aren't very strong at the moment), so don't claim to know all about it and could be wrong, and someone with more knowledge about warden can comment on it.

I don't have much experience with burgs, why are they not wanted at smaller groups, but wanted at raids?
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

for 3-man content, you generally want a combo of 1 tank, 1 dps, 1 healer or a lore-master.
6-man content, you often don't have room for every single kind of support, which often leaves the weakest - burglar - out. It is often okay to take one, but it's rarely the best choice.
For raids, burglar provides unique debuffs that can be applied on top of the other classes, even if it is the least wanted of the support classes. You pretty much always have room for a full support core of lore-master + captain + burglar. Also in a raid, the support classes shine more since there are more players who can take advantage of the buffs and debuffs.

It is not impossible to complete the 3-man and 6-man content with a burglar, but you might find a hard time finding groups since people usually prefer the classes better suited for the instances.

No hunter with brains will be using Throne gear at level 120 endgame, Epic Battle Jewelry set is more powerful. Most of the sets listed here are wildly situational and not required for endgame except a few.

The class item is still useful for hunters.

Which hunters? The ones that still use the power cost class essence in redline so they put it on the essence slot level 105 class item? What a joke. You lose 5k morale and you still don't have power issues if you use the level 120 class item.

Wardens are viable Anvil t2/t3 DPS, but you need to do one of two things:
    1. Get the Abyss four-piece set and some nice jewellery, or
    2. Get the Throne four-piece set and get some really nice jewellery.

Both sets are still available, but they have their downsides. In the first case, you are fairly squishy, and your spear bleed damage is lower. In the second case, you're just squishy.

I don't think this changes your recommendation; wardens aren't very nice starter classes. It's just for completeness' sake.
Andhilin, Ifeyina, Iondhilin, wardens of Gondolin -- Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit into Sightblinder's eye on the Last Day.

Warden essentially needs these and a non-legendary weapon swappy for non-light bleeds, and even if you manage all this, in most cases the other classes still outclass warden. Warden is viable and CAN be played, it's just usually inferior to the other classes, which is why it's in the bottom of the list.
