This kind of server is intresting to me. I do wonder if it would be a fad or something that generates long term intrest. The other thing I would wonder is where do you stop....at some point players would want a server for the game start through (as in Lotro) the Moria expansion and etc.

I would be very intrested in playing a classic server for Lotro even if for nothing else just to have the feel of the oringial.

Me personally would love to see a fresh start with all classes and current abilities, races, and revamped zones. Have all endgame content gated of course. Would love to hear your opinion on the matter... Many mmorpgs have and huge success with fresh start servers
For one thing, I was here for the launch of Shadows of Angmar and have been playing for over 11 years now.

I'm lost for words as to why people would want to go back to the original launch mechanics. No horses until level 35, only a handful of swift travels compared to today, no open tapping, not being able to complete quest chains without grouping up. etc.

SSG is a small gaming company that has 2 games it's developing and maintaining. They just don't have the staff or the resources that Blizzard would have for WOW and there Vanilla server project which goes live today.

If I remember correctly, Cordovan has addressed this question in his twitch.tv/lotrostream.

Essentially this game has grown so much and been changed many times and some of the original developers are no longer with SSG formerly Turbine. With a refresh server as you call it, Lotro would basically have to be redeveloped. There just isn't the staff, time or resources to do this.

Finally, if you enjoy the old content, you can start a level 50 cap kin and only use what was available during SOA. Just go to the store and get the Tortoise Stone pocket item and put it on when you hit level 50.

Exactly, and I'd like to add one more thing.

It's impossible to recreate the sense of wonder that all of us experienced when we first started playing SoA. That's what I'm nostalgic for.

Indeed. (I may have said something like that upthread.)

    That’s cool. I like that.

Fresh start servers usually try to emulate the game as it was back then. I.e taking out alot of the quality of life changes like group finder and a queue up system. Making it as close to original as possible.

You do not deserve any apologies. All it is gated and nothing more. It’s not even close to being like the LOTRO of 2007.

that is true, but this thread idea was for a "Fresh start server" which has happened, it wasn't about making it like it was back in the day, his first post was exactly how it came to be.

And Thank Illuvatar it isn't! Of course everyone is different, but having played on the Anor server last week (traveling now, home tonight) I can seriously tell you it would have been a NIGHTMARE if we didn't have modern code open tapping rules and loot rules.

SSG and Turbine also have made tweaks and small changes to old world zones that make it a much better world to experience in 2018. I understand nostalgia is a thing, and being of an age that I can remember that John Lennon was shot, I can tell you I have had many fond memories of playing games on a amber monochrome monitor on an XT computer in the early 1980s.... but I would NEVER want that back. In short: I would much rather play the 2000s re-made version of Kings Quest 1 than the original game from the early 1980s.

And that is how I feel about Lotro.... there is a lot of memories, I have a lot of fond memories of Everquest as well.... but I wouldn't want to come NEAR the 2007 code of Lotro, riddled with its bugs, with all of its inconveniences, and making the game all about WAITING instead of playing.

I mean, do you really want to make the 20 minute trek to an instance opening to start an instance, only for the Minstrel to say "oops, I forgot to trait blue", and kindly wait another half hour or so for him to huff it back to the nearest bard to change traits and come back to the instance door?

.... Maybe you WANT that world, but I don't. Let me open tap mobs that are hard to find. Let us all share in the loot. And let us be able to use the instance finder!

(Plus, the extensive list of other improvements made over the last 10 years, such as stables, added return-to skills, cosmetic system, houses, and... well... Evendim!

Yes. Even if we could go back to the original SoA code (which AFAIK we can't, and I'm just as glad), we would not be the same players that we were nearly twelve years ago. Heraklitos said, "No one can step in the same river twice," because the river is continually changing and so are we. The best way of revisiting SoA is in our memories, where we can recall when SoA was fresh and new and so were we.

(Some of us anyway. Twelve years ago I was 64, not much different from now.)
