Each race/gender combination has it's own version of a quest. Swapping would screw with quests, deeds and entire quest chains.

Unless they start manually coding a program that would index the entire game for and swap out every quest on your character, it isn't likely. Getting an actual person to do this would take even longer.

Great news and a great new area! Wished we could have gotten Northern Mirkwood when my kin had 20 active members lol. Really looking forward to an update on the 64-bit client.

So to change from male to female or the other way around is to much work? Lol....

The size of Mirkwood Forest alone is Huge, when you see how many Siege of Mirkwood Expansions you can fit inside it as a whole. I think we'll only see a fraction of Northern Mirkwood with Update 22. Especially seeing as the focus of the Update appears to be on the top right side of Mirkwood and four very major locations located nearby. If we get a whole top slice of Mirkwood plus a land connection from the Anduin Vales I'd be surprised.

    Cheers

Your right, cheap was a poor word choice. I was thinking more of the thin veneer of lore and back story surrounding most MMOs, much of it "borrowed" from Tolkien anyway.

Many of those games do however have very rich game worlds and systems, many having very large and active raid and pvp communities, and some (see WoW in particular) succeed in doing what LotRO has long tried but failed to do, catering for all play styles from the completely casual player up to the most avid raider.

Greetings, and thank you for being a part of Lord of the Rings Online! 2017 has been a huge year for us. This not only was our first full year as Standing Stone Games, but was also the year we realized one of the most exciting dreams we've had for more than a decade: bringing you Mordor, the fate of the One Ring, and the Fall of Sauron.

2017 also marked the start of a new long-form tale of our own with the release of the Black Book of Mordor. We're excited to further explore the lore and setting of Middle-earth for years to come, both by telling our own stories, and continuing to add the most iconic encounters, locations, and developments from the trilogy to the game.

The Black Book of Mordor's plot continues in Update 22, leading to Northern Mirkwood! We are busy developing this region, including Thranduil's Court, Dale, Laketown, and Erebor. Who is now leading Dale and Laketown? Why are legions of refugees fleeing from Rhûn, with tales of death and horror on their lips? And why are spiders missing from the forest, and where have they gone? We'll answer these questions and more. We are also already planning for our updates between 22 and 23, including new additions to the Anniversary event and Summer Festival.

Before Update 22 releases next year, we’ll be celebrating the end of 2017 by launching a new raid: The Abyss of Mordath. In a thrilling conclusion to the storylines introduced in Dor Amarth, you and your friends and kin will descend into the Black Pits of Mordor in pursuit of King Váskmun Greytooth and the Firehorn Dwarves. At last, the time has come to put an end to King Greytooth’s misguided quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf-ring, Manthríf, and avenge the threats he levied against the dwarves of Durin’s Folk. Alas, the devoted followers of the Order of the Eye also search the Abyss, for they seek both vengeance on the Firehorns and knowledge of Sauron’s greatest secrets. However, neither the Firehorns nor the Order of the Eye know the truth of the terrors that lurk in the deepest shadows of the Mordath. This Level 115 Raid features three new boss encounters and offers a plethora of new rewards including best-in-slot armour, jewellery, off-hand items, and unique housing items!

Update 21.3 will feature new Housing Items, some of which will be found in the raid, others will be available through the Quartermaster in-game, and a few will be available in Gorgoroth Lootboxes. Speaking of new stuff, the Yule Festival will see new cosmetics, including a woodland crown, a new Winter dress, and a new Yule-themed cloak. Additionally, we have long heard players request the ability to have an Elk mount which will be offered in addition to two new cosmetic pets.

One of the projects begun in 2017 that will continue into 2018 is the update of our character avatars. We're planning to release the Hobbit and Dwarf avatar update, and will continue afterwards with further improvements.

For our musicians in LOTRO, we're excited to announce that a new instrument is being added to the music system: The fiddle! We expect this new instrument to debut in Update 22.

Looking beyond Update 22, we know you have been asking to see even more classic moments from the trilogy. We have a way to go before we see Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, but we intend to bring you other well-known parts of the book. In Update 23, we intend to visit Minas Morgul, and say a fearful hello to Shelob herself.

We also plan to make improvements to various systems like class skills and power, evolving player power through the Legendary Item system, and more. We'll update the Anniversary Event along with all of our other yearly Festivals. In particular, we’re looking forward to seeing Bingo Boffin’s Harvestmath Festival tale that began this year continue into next year.

Once again, thank you for helping us bring Tolkien's world to life. We love seeing your concerts, plays, events, livestreams, artwork, poetry, writing, and more, and we think it's one of the things that really sets our community and game apart. We look forward to another year of celebration with you!

Nae saian luume! It's been too long indeed! Standing Stone Games! Hope for the hopeless! Severlin ~ HERO OF LEGEND! AMG.

You have restored the hope for Lord of the Rings online! I couldn't have hoped for better news! The Ultimate anticipation. Beyond Mortal comprehension , even Eldar ( : Ignoring the meaningless comments about Elk mounts and typical Keyboard warrior fights between certain individuals I simply couldn't had resisted not to log in and to thank you with all my heart for creating the Northern Mirkwood! I've seen these moments in my dreams. I knew it. "Everything is proceeding as I have forseen. I believe there is a thread of mine in which I explained/predicted the release and expansion of Eriador. From all the minor or major regions I'd pick up Forest of Mirkwood. That'll be the hour when I shall I re-subscribe.

Right you are. Huge news ~ Huge impact on my Nerdiness level. The ultimate impact LOTRO nerd Hammer smite. I wasn't prepared at all. I did not know Letter was released at all. When I saw "Northern Mirkwood" Heart started to pump up 200% and memories emerged from 2010/2011

The reasons why I am so hyper to venture within North once again!

~ Expansion of Mirkwood. It's been far too long. Seven years+ What terrors ,tales and foes awaits us? Mountains of Mirkwood,Giant Spiders! ELVES! FEMALE ELVES! AMG! DWARVES! EREBOR! BARUK-KHAZAD!

I grew weary and tired of monotony of men, Rohan peasantry and Gondirain dullness. It is over.

It reminded on the Elder days of LOTRO, First the Moria Expansion ~ Woods of Lorien update ~ Mirkwood, focused and centered primarily to Naugrum and Eldar. Soon we shall do it again.

Magnificent Realm of King Thranduil, one of my personal favourite from The Hobbit Book&Movie.

Laketown , an entirely unique city of men.

Mighty Erebor and stubborn stone folk. Intrigued about lore and soundtrack. It never disappointed. It never shall.

All these plots, twists, stories, landscape is now warpping up in my mind. Omg, you still do not realise the perfect step you took, You will never. The best possible route ~ The expansion of the North/Mordor and then eventually lands in South. Rhun. That'll be too much for me haha, wow.. Shocked and amazed in a positive way.

By Orome! And people still complain. Do not pay much heed for mortal minds. For almost 11 year old game and the current state of the game ,future news couldn't be more thrilling. Outstanding. I marvel at your dedication, ideas and truly accurate approach. Huge step forward once more we shall slay the darkness.

I must admit I do not anticipate new raid with a lot of fervour. Minas Morgul and Sheolb is a whole another story to tell.

Dear Vala, Bingo's ballad, update to Anniversary event, all these little wonders and passionate attention to details! You made me proud! Standing Stone games, 2018 shall be Flawless year for LOTRO. I can feel it and I am very rarely wrong.

I am out of words, Nothing but Ultra hyper, positive, motivating, thri lling,MIND BLOWING REVEAL! Not a single complain. I am looking forward to absolutely everything from Story, lore, new regions, soundtrack, update to Anniversary event, Bingo's continuation, housing items, new instances. *Faints*

And now I see.. you even added a new musical instrument! *bows deeply* New avatar models shall please Hobbit and Dwarf players indeed.

Perfect news. Absolutely Perfect. You have made my afternoon and filled my burning heart with passion for Lord of the Rings online once again, but this time for real. I've felt it with Mordor. It was almost the same hype. Now we shall embark to Mirkwood again. My mind was always focused on the North, Angmar,Mirkwood,Khazad-Dum. I am so .. hyped up now. I have to stop.

I shall. For the rest of you, by the Vala, stop complaining , you cannot comprehend YET the beauty of the letter and untold amount of fun which awaits thee.

    Question on Guard

Will you finally just finish off Guardians please? The quests with an hour timer...without raid gear it takes so long to kill signatures, its literally impossible to solo with the time allotted. And the damage we take now far exceeds what should be suffer when you consider it TAKES over 4 MINTUES to kill a signature (I am geared quite nicely but no raid stuff). Literally every other class can kill one of more mobs before Guardians can kill one and since the other classes will hardly get hit you've made us worthless. I've been with LOTRO since about 6 months after it opened, but you guys have ruined for many of us. So please just finish off Guardians so I'll never be tempted to start paying for it again. Hell I won't even play for free with how you've ruined it. I was hoping Morder would be better at 115 but no, you guys truly did make it suck from start to finish.

My hopefully personal humorous slant: A Player's Letter filling in a few gaps.

Greetings, and thank you so much for sticking with Lord of the Rings Online, who knew? 2017 has been a tough year for us. This not only was our first full year as Standing Stone Games with reduced staffing, but was also the year we realized one of the most exciting dreams we've had for more than a 5 minutes, to stop giving away expansions for LP, bringing you Mordor, the fate of the One Ring, and the Fall of Sauron for hard cash, ka-ching.

2017 also marked the start of a new long-form tale of our own with the release of the Black Book of Mordor, to keep F2P customers from the Epic Quest line. We will further be developing ways to further reduce F2P effectiveness with reduced possibilities for gaining in game currency as they refuse to use real world currency to play. We're excited to further explore the lore and setting of Middle-earth for years to come, both by telling our own stories, and continuing to add the most iconic encounters, locations, and developments from the trilogy to the game. No Tolkien ghost looking over our shoulders to guide us now. As we move further from the relics of Turbine we drop the "Soon" moniker to instead use "Oops" after much speedier releases to further tie in the new era of Standing Stone Games.

The Black Book of Mordor's plot continues in Update 22, leading to Northern Mirkwood! We are busy developing this region, including Thranduil's Court, Dale, Laketown, and Erebor. Who is now leading Dale and Laketown? Why are legions of refugees fleeing from Rhûn, with tales of death and horror on their lips, why, would you stick around? And why are spiders missing from the forest, and where have they gone? We'll answer these questions and more. We are also already planning for our updates between 22 and 23, including fixing the bugs/implementation of the Anniversary event and selection of the "Heat" in the Summer Festival.

Before Update 22 releases next year, we’ll be celebrating the end of 2017 by launching a new raid: The Abyss of Mordath. In a thrilling conclusion to the storylines introduced in Dor Amarth, you and your friends and kin will descend into the Black Pits of Mordor in pursuit of King Váskmun Greytooth and the Firehorn Dwarves, who could have guessed this minor potentate would figure in a raid? At last, the time has come to put an end to King Greytooth’s misguided quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf-ring, Manthríf, and avenge the threats he levied against the dwarves of Durin’s Folk. Alas, the devoted followers of the Order of the Eye also search the Abyss, for they seek both vengeance on the Firehorns and knowledge of Sauron’s greatest secrets. However, neither the Firehorns nor the Order of the Eye know the truth of the terrors that lurk in the deepest shadows of the Mordath. This Level 115 Raid features half the expected new boss encounters, in conjunction with "cluster's" redefinition to mean just Two and offers a plethora of new rewards including best-in-slot armour, jewellery, off-hand items (except Shields we lost the code for them), and unique housing items that may or not turn up in the lootbox loot by mistake, Oops!

Update 21.3 will feature new Housing Items, some of which will be found in the raid, others will be available through the Quartermaster in-game, and a few will be available in Gorgoroth Lootboxes, indeed we are moving towards the one thousand item loot table by the spring of 2018. Speaking of new stuff, the Yule Festival will see new cosmetics, including a woodland crown, a new Winter dress, and a new Yule-themed cloak. Additionally, we have long heard players request the ability to have an Elk mount which will be offered in addition to two new cosmetic pets, sadly we missed the boat having an Elk mount as the ultimate reward for the Anniversary Event last year.

One of the projects begun in 2017 that will continue into 2018 is the update of our character avatars. Having spent a good deal of resources into this we're stuck with how we implemented it, no control of what others see, calls to the dodgy servers would crash the game if doing it any other way. We're planning to release the Hobbit and Dwarf avatar update as part of our revenge on all the detractors on the forums, how we laughed.

For our musicians in LOTRO, we're excited to announce that a new instrument is being added to the music system: The fiddle! We expect this new instrument to debut in Update 22. This is to remind everyone of the joint meaning implied by the new paedo avatars and fiddling you out of your disposable income with the lootbox lottery casino mini game.

Work stumbles on with the 64bit client and should be available as gaming moves into 128bit OSs.

Looking beyond Update 22, we know you have been asking to see even more classic moments from the trilogy. We have a way to go before we see Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, but we intend to bring you other well-known parts of the book. In Update 23, we intend to visit Minas Morgul, and say a fearful hello to Shelob herself where we will further reduce the numerical meaning of cluster.

We also plan to make improvements to various systems like class skills and power, evolving player power through the Legendary Item system, and more, another few hundred empowerments should do it. We'll update the Anniversary Event along with all of our other yearly Festivals as this caters to our Superfans according to our metrics. In particular, we’re looking forward to seeing Bingo Boffin’s Harvestmath Festival tale that began this year continue into next year as weekly episodic content moves to yearly episodic content with our reduced staffing levels.

Once again, thank you for helping us bring Tolkien's world to life. We love seeing your concerts, plays, events, livestreams, artwork, poetry, writing, and more, BUT NOT YOUR FEEDBACK thank you and we think it's one of the things that really sets our community and game apart: Ignoring the bugs, poor implementation, performance and polish. We look forward to another year of celebration in the office, how do you put up with it?

    A Player

    Mac

First off, there is no such thing as raid gear currently.

Secondly, signatures have like 140k morale give or take (cant remember accurate). If it takes you over 4 minutes to kill one you are absolute horrid on your class. This means sub 600 dps which is closer to auto attacks generated offense rather than using your skills dps. Signature takes 20-25s or so to kill on guardian without full dps focused gear. guard should EASILY average 5k st dps on mobs. I constantly average way more than that...

You are FAR too optimistic, the 256bit Win10 Ultimate, build 1,000,000,000,000 OS will just be becoming obsolete when the LOTRO 64 bit alpha comes out.

    Elk should be reindeer

I can't help but feel like all the grievances people are having with the elk mount (and it's not like Wargs were used as mounts) would go away if it were called something different. Like, a reindeer or some such. Tying it in more with all the winter cosmetics would certainly make it a lot easier to stomach. As for myself, I don't mind; goats are already added, so if the Elk gets something different (say, war steed speed and normal handling), it can have a place.

    Okay, I know I shouldn't, really I shouldn't, but I can't help it.

    LMAO.

I'm going to take a wild guess that even the team couldn't keep a straight face when they read that (if they read it).

Nothing makes it easier to stomach, as nobody in Middle Earth rode them :-/ I understand that the goats were added to Moria for the sake of traveling abilities, since horses and ponies wouldn't be able to maneuver in caves. But things like druggavar mounts and now elk mounts...what's next? Dragons?

since elves took their deer, it is a honestly demand that dwarfs should have their pig!

    Hey Sev,

First, let's drop the pretense SSG will ever develop a 64bit client. They mention it once in a blue moon just to shut up the few people who still think it's coming. That's why you didn't even mention it, isn't it? You forgot to keep the facade going. Big mistake.

Second, how about making the class we PAY FOR, the BEORNING, at least minimally comparable in regards to other classes and finally finish the work you hastily rushed out to make the money grab and then dropped working on over 3 YEARS AGO. No, that "balance pass" you did a while ago doesn't count because it was WORTHLESS and showed how much disdain you really have for your players foolish enough to give you money for a class.

Or is dropping Beorning to $3.00 in the cash shop your way of saying "Too bad, so sad, we'll just make it cheap so you don't complain as much that we're never doing anything worthwhile to it again.", as I figure it is?

Well, I hope that rabbit sleighs may appear in Northern Mirkwood as a cosmetic item/mount (like Hobby-horse). Lossoths have sleighs for 10 years so I guess it would be nice if we have a rabbit sleigh.

Moreover, if Erebor or Dale will have their own epic battles, it would be cool if we can use weapon like goat chariots or a dwarf heavy ballista besides traditional catapults and a small ballista.

Please pardon if you do not like my opinion because I have been influenced by the Hobbit trilogy.

I believe that LOTRO will thrive in 2018 and many more years later.

Best wishes for everyone and Happy New Year.

I hope it never comes too that, this Middle-Earth, not the films. however the lossoth skates be fine cause they did use Bone skates and sleds, but please no not a ridiculous bunny sled... lol

Don't know if it's been mentioned, don't know if this'll be noticed, but there's reason to believe the Entwives are just upriver from the Sea of Rhun:

    https://www.quora.com/After-Lord-of-...9e38&srid=JNrl

Read down to the edits, this guy says his dad made a huge, detailed map of Middle Earth and was accepted to meet Tolkien with his map. Asking about the Entwives, Tolkien marked a spot near the Sea of Rhun as where the Entwives "may be". (Past initial answer, he had to revise the answer after speaking with his father and finding his memory was off on location and "be" vs. "may be")
