    Post Glossary

    Glossary:

    Below is our glossary of RP chicken words/phrases which developed over time into common lingo to many who spend an eggstraordinary amount of time with chickens. Some are conventions to work around game dynamics in a way that sounds like it fits in naturally to Middle-earth.

    ~~~~~~~o~o~~~~~~~
    Amon Hen: a place very, very, very far away from Sandson's Farm. Some chickens embeak on a pilgrimage there to see the missing link between themselves and Big Folk.
    Brass Beak: A wingchick that successfully kept another chicken alive by sacrificing themselves.
    Broodie (also Broody): a chicken in your run that has failed the run in the past.
    Carrier Pidgeon: an RP convention- whether referring to IMs/whispers or regional, these tireless birds take messages everywhere.
    Carrier Pidgeon Unions: an RP convention- Sandson's Farm is considered a "Festival" chat zone, which is not the same as the "Shire" chat zones. This makes it difficult to keep communication going on the /regional channel because someone on the farm cannot hear the regional messages if the messenger is on the other side of the Carrier Pidgeon Union Tree. It's also very important to know this when the farm becomes layered due to a large turn out for a run--you can't see anyone, but you know folk are there. So the joke is the Festival Union and the Shire Union birds can't cross the line.
    Carrier Pidgeon Union Tree, The: an RP convention-If you take the path from the East Road by turning at the signpost towards Sandson's Farm, there is a tree on your right just outside the farm where you will see your chat channels switch over from Shire to Festival as you pass it. Depending on which side you need to be on, then be on that side of the tree.
    Chickengard: a Team Tendered Race to a place very, very far from Sandson's Farm. Teams lead their chicken for prizes and glory if the chicken doesn't become supper.
    Chicken Tender (also Tender): a Free Folk who is helping escort the chickens do what they need to do, usually by swatting away other creatures who want you to be Dinner.
    Chicken Tender Button: These buttons are made from spotted eggshell, where the sides have been carefully cut and hardened by some process known only to Farmer Sandson, Rue Goodbody, and possibly Daffodilia Wildfeet. Awarded for exemplary service on Sandson's farm (and sometimes at the cook fires), often during Chicken month. The first two awardees at the Addernotch Station House by the Bounders of the Shire were Mama Hen and young Meadowlark Sweetweed, the Shire's first Racemaster.
    Chicken Trainer (also Trainer): Whatever Free Folk you are on when you do the chicken quests. Your chicken has your name on it, because you are the trainer.
    Chief Tender: The Chicken Trainer in charge of the run.
    Cloak of the Cluck: A beloved cloak, similar to one offered at Hobnanigans, yet very different! Earned once you complete all the quests leading up to and including the Flying the Coop line.
    Crosser of Roads: A title that has brought many seeking it to tears. This is earned once you complete the Free Range questline. Not something a Spring Chicken can pull off.
    Crowded Coop: During long runs or races, sometimes a lot of folk show up, and only so many chicken session slots are available per quest. The Chief/Marshall will call "Crowded Coop", and anyone who doesn't need that run but wants to be a chicken would then take an alternate quest destination (like Everswim instead of Rivendell).
    Dinner (also Supper or Soup): a chicken that is/was killed during a run.
    Fleet Footed Fowl: a convention used to describe racing chickens. Chicken races are a non-quest RP game where folks get their chickens and then race to whatever course/destination without Tenders, with prizes awarded accordingly.
    Fool: a very rare title from a long obsolete April Fool's quest where chickens could go to the Moors via a special nest.
    Fowl Marshall: Typically a goldie, the head chicken in a run. They are always a leader in a more formal parade (not the typical one in Bree), sometimes a second Marshall will rear guard in runs as well to keep an eye out for laggers.
    Flying the Coop: The second series of quests that must be done to obtain your cloak after you finish the 3 Green Egg quests.
    Free Range: The third series of quests and deeds that must be done to obtain the title "Crosser of Roads".
    Free Wing: An attempt to complete any quest/deed without the help of Tenders. Fowl Marshalls and Wing Chicks can be at such attempts.
    Free Wingers: (see above) Chickens who have attempted/succeeded to complete/completed any or many of their quests without the help of Tenders.
    Get Your/Their Chicken(s): This happens after you are given the go ahead by the Chief Tender, and you go talk to Billena or George, depending on the quest.
    Goldies: Chickens who have completed the Flying the Coop questline. When you talk to George, a golden feathered fowl will be offered for Free Range quests. (Free Range is repeatable, so you can always be a goldie after this point.)
    Great Wide Open: The newest quest for chickens to a place very, very, very, very far away from Sandson's Farm.
    Green Egg: A trainer/chicken who is on the first 3 quests that Wald Sandson offers at the farm.
    Hacklers: Starking mad chickens that actually go out and fight other creatures, usually in large flocks. (You can level if you survive long enough.)
    Hill, The: The Hill is the last stretch after the Ford of Bruin in the Trollshaws run. It is the most difficult by far thanks to the many lynxes to be found on the hillside.
    Lady/Lord of the Wings: title granted by completing the "Great Wide Open" quest to get your chicken to Minis Tirith.
    Mama Hen: Rozalinde. There is no other.
    Parade: Exactly what it sounds like, often done while traveling through Bree Town, with chickens almost always in single file.
    Pipping: The first time one needs to speak to Billena.
    Primaries: Chickens who have completed the Free Range quests and deeds, and have obtained their Crosser of Roads title.
    Racemaster: The equivalent to a Chief Tender for races. This post is most often held by young Meadowlark, the founder of Landy chicken races.
    Racing Chickens: see Fleet Footed Fowls.
    Radagast the Brown: The only Free Folk who ever understands a thing we're trying to squawk.
    Regional Inn: an RP convention- where there is an Inn with Carrier Pidgeons that travel all about the Shire, sharing gossip, announcements, et al.
    Shire Time: /servertime aka ST, as in "We'll be meeting at Sandson's Farm at 5:00pm ST."
    Spent Hen: A Broodie that has tried but not yet completed the Free Range questline.
    Spring Chicken: A chicken that is within scratching distance of Free Range.
    Tail Feather: A chicken that acts as Rear Guard.
    Uncle Rooster: Hologro, who stepped up when Mama Hen went on walkabout.
    Wald Sandson: (also "That fella that sometimes feeds us") A hobbit to speak to at Sandson's Farm if you ever hope to become one with your inner chicken.
    Wingchick(s): Experienced chickens, goldies or otherwise, who assist as they can during runs. Wingchicks have been known to sacrifice themselves in harder runs in order to help Broodies and Spent Hens succeed (see: Brass Beak).
    Yard: RP slang for the /world channel.
    Post Chicken Camp!
    Chicken Camp
    Whether yer a Green Egg or a Crosser of Roads, it's time fer Chicken Camp once again! All Camps meet at Sandson's Farm in the Shire. All times listed are Shire Time.
    Our first offerings a' Camp will be a pre-Month a' the Chicken warmup the last weekend in July, so stretch yer wings and shake the dust off a' yer tailfeathers.
    Below ya'll find: the schedule; two sources about Chickens in LOTRO; and notes on chicken and free folk communication. Since Camp is aimed at folks who are new t' our special chickens, ya may alreadies be familiar with some things explained below, and it's more OOC than I would normally post for brevity without sacrificing too much clarity.
    Two things of note: We are still sizing up Camp schedules fer August, so more will be added when we find the eggsactly right time & day fer our Chief Tenders. Also, Mama Hen is still stubbornly roosting in retirement, and her Guide is no longer available. We will be puttin' t'gether a Guide fer the Free Range portion a' Camp based on our old notes. The Free Range run this year will be led by Uncle Rooster, Hologro.
    Schedule (anything in italics is still tentative):
    Communication:
    The most important thing to know is that chickens and Free Folk cannot understand each other's spoken language. This means even if you have chat bubbles on, you cannot see anything the other says in bubble,/say,/emote,/tell,/regional,/world, et al because chickens are treated like Creeps (Monster Players--though if you go to the Moors, Creeps will gleefully kill you.) We work around this in three possible ways:
    1) Use a non LOTRO voice program like Team Speak or Vent;
    2) Have either a Free Folk double boxing (playing two accounts at the same time) with a chicken, or have folks in the same household on as Free Folk/chicken during a run who can act as intermediaries;
    3) Use the play dead chicken skill, jumping chickens, and certain Free Folk emotes to say things like "stop", "ok", "start" that will always be made clear before folk "get (your) their chicken" (see the glossary.)
    The second most important thing is when you get to Sandson's Farm, find out who the Chief Tender is and who the Fowl Marshall is if there is one. The Chief Tender will explain what is going on and when to get your chicken. The Fowl Marshall (when one is present) will communicate with the Chief Tender, as well as lead your run if you are a chicken. (On any run where Rozalinde is present, she is Mama Hen--both Chiefs and Marshalls will defer to her even though she may not be the Chief/Marshall of that run.)
    The third most important thing is to know is that F2P account chickens will have trouble using the /world and /regional and any userchat channels. If this is you, learn to use the ~ when trying to /tell your Fowl Marshall something really important like /tell ~Egglantine I'm Dinner or /tell ~Scrambled My house is on fire and I have to go. Remember that /say range is quite limited and /e or /shout range is not much farther (/e=emote)
    The fourth most important thing is although it's fun to run like the wind, do not use your run skill just because. Even wardens have a tough time keeping up with fleet footed fowls, and in the time it takes for Tenders to get on their horse, catch up and dismount, you might be Dinner. Save that for when a bear is running towards you and the Tenders are busy finding hidden lynxes.
    The last, but not least most important thing to know is do your best to stay alive, which often means do not hide under the skirts of someone fighting a creature with AOE skills.
    If you have any questions that haven't been answered by the above, please feel free to ask.
    Chicken Races - August 3 - 9:00 PM
    Bounder Chief Daffodilia Wildfeet (aka Gaming_Gal) deserves full credit for Month of the Chicken.
    However, this was built on the first Chicken Races hosted by Li'l Meadowlark Sweetweed - half-owner of the Oak N. Barrell Inn and full owner of the pony Happyhoofs.
    One day, while returning to the Shire from Bree, Meadowlark was nearly trampled by a chicken running in the other direction. Immediately, he had an imagining. He imagined somebody - in his imagining, it was somebody new to adventure in the world - suddenly encountering a whole flock of chickens galloping down the road.
    Such a thought made him smile, and - in the hopes that it might cause smiles elsewhere - he organized the first Chicken Races.
    On August 3 (Wednesday) at 9:00 PM, Mr. Meadowlark Sweetweed - as an official part of Month of the Chicken - will be hosting another chicken race.
    Owners may bring their chickens to Sandson's Farm in the Shire in advance of the race.
    The course will take them from Sandson's Farm, to the cook's oven in Michel Delving, to Stock Tower near Stock, to Bullroarer's Statue in Brockenborings, and back to Sandson's Farm.
    Prizes to be announced.
    If you do not have a properly trained racing chicken, you can make one by attending either of the two Green Eggs training camps on Saturday, July 30 - at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Chicken tenders on duty will help to make sure you get a properly trained chicken for the races.
    ((For the chicken races, one will need to enter chicken session play at a level that will allow one to remain in session play for at least 30 minutes. The Green Egg training camps will help you accomplish that, and the chicken tenders can answer any questions you may have.
    I still smile when I imagine some player, new or old, travelling on the road and suddenly stampeded by a large flock of chickens.))
    All events are posted in Shire Time.** If ya have any related queries, please feel free t' contact me here or via the Quick Post (Daffodilia).
    I have been waiting for a replacement part for my computer. It is now supposed to be arriving by the 18th at latest.
    The reason this matters is my computer is currently overheating especially when I try to play LOTRO (no A/C in our current place isn't helping either as we've had some bad heat and humidity here).
    Because the event today was a Free Wing RP event, we decided to postpone it to when I won't vanish mid RP storyline.
    Tomorrow, because I'd not been able to get the map made due to overheats, no one knows the route ahead of time, so that is postponed as well.
    I am still awaiting word on if there will be an MT run at the end of the month, as that is being led by another kin.
    We were going to try a Rivendell Run on Sunday at 10am, but since that wasn't added to the schedule ahead of time, it will depend on if anyone shows up or not that needs the run.
    Hopefully the part will show up soon, and I can laugh about how Murphy got me good yet again in this lifetime.
    Apologies to anyone who does not see this notice until after they show up for the postponed events.
    Thank you for the update. I'm dusting off my Mama Hen notes just in case.
    Yay! I felt so safe during the whole run with such skilled escort! And Uncle Rooster and all the chicken tenders made sure that any lost chickens were quickly taken back to the group as well!
    Thank you so very very much, everyone! It was a great adventure and my friend and I had so much fun!
