No. It's lore-related, if that helps any.

Long shot.... Gollum. That's if the "friend" is a "precious" friend.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Good answer. But unfortunately, not the one I'm looking for. Gollum doesn't meet the part about "no tale tells my fate"

    Re: The Riddle-Game

I had 2 guesses, but I do not believe they are right:

    Orcrist, or Amandil.

  6. #2356

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Well, it's not what I was thinking of, but Amandil actually does fit, so I'm inclined to give it to you. The actual answer I was looking for was Peregrin Boffin, the hobbit who ran off to follow Bilbo and ended up meeting and helping Frodo.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

yay, I guessed somewhat right :P

The only way Amandil fits is if we meet again after we die and leave the circles of Middle-Earth. And there's no real proof that we do (in fact, it would render the whole of life pointless if it was) so Amandil was kind of a long shot.

    Anyway, my next riddle then:

Stone and shrub together stand upon the brink
recalling our beloved land doomed to sink
Cold and high with warding hand but without blink
from unending duty will we never shrink.

    -------

bonus points for the trochaic meter? (I think?)

The statues of Isildur and Anárion, Gates of Argonath. I say this because of the "warding hand" description.

But, I also thought of the statues at High Kings Crossing, since you mentioned "beloved land doomed to sink" - i.e. covered by water.

The Argonath is correct. I will also accept praise as the correct response to my riddle :P

LOL. Oh, I should have said that - it was a very well done/well written riddle! Excellent work!

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Well, this is a simple one, but I thought I'd post just to keep the game going....

    An army of one
Neither gnashing teeth nor stabbing spear shall easily kill me
    Powerless I fall.

No, not what I was thinking. Hmm, now that I re-read it, it's fairly generic in its writing. So hint: think more generically in its answer. P.S. I edited one word as well, because I realized it was technically incorrect the way it was.... I guess I was over-using a bit of poetic license there.

    two brothers we are,
    and though dead,

there are so many potential answers to this one that I don't know where to start. I would say that the best fits are Fingolfin/Finarfen, Tuor/Huor or Turin/Hurin. But I don't like these answers as much as I like:

    The eyes of Mandos.

How about the two trees of valinor, telperion and laurelin?

Please don't interpret this the wrong way, but:
You do know Laurelin was female, right? xD

Laurelin was a tree, they are usually both, and having read the Silmarillion and most of the History of Middle Earth I can honestly say I recall no refrence to either tree's "sex".

edit: having looked it up it seems Laurelin was refered to as a female, that does not make the tree actually female. many people refer to cars or boats as a "she" it does not make them female.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Laurelin was also called "Culurien" , the suffix "-ien" having no meaning other than to specify the gender, in this case, female, in the same way "-ion" specified the male gender.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

I don't recall reading anything about the sex of the tree's. But I'm rather a fast reader and only read it twice, once recently and once as a kid some >20 years ago. I considered that part poetry and the "starlight" plus that they are dead made me think of the trees.
