Quite right Wom. Now get back to the quiz thread and answer my question there as well! After submitting your riddle here, of course.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

I'm still thinking about your ME quiz question, edwin. Not gaining any headway though. I'm at work at the moment so I can't check the quest logs, but I'm sure someone will figure it out soon enough.

Here's a new riddle, though. Non-lore and not too tough:

    Ultimate weapon of Yavanna's ranks,
    Deserved target of gatherers' thanks,
Forgotten past of the tallest of tall,
Without which the world would slowly fall,
Encased in armor or sometimes flesh,
And within the circle of life enmeshed,
So then answer me now, I humbly beg,
What came before both chicken and egg?

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Cool the small beginnings line at the end was what gave it away hehe

here's my latest. i tried to make it obscure

With great anger a peace loving shepherd of trees
Became something complete, truly whole in all ways
This great wrath set the home of the hobbit folk free
From a stifling rebuke, stern and spoken in haste
But when it came to that choice at the end of the road
This wrath made it a weariness, fatigue from the load

    edit: not lore-specific,

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Non-lore specific but with lots of lore references... tricksy, very tricksy. Not sure at the moment but I'll start by guessing "mourning".

EDIT: By the way, did we ever get verification that Hezrin's riddle was solved?

    Re: The Riddle-Game

There seems to be a lot of references to Saruman's involvement.... Treebeard got angry at him so he destroyed Saruman's property, Saruman went to the Shire and began an industrial revolution of sorts, and Frodo and company captured him and let him go. After this, Grima killed him, an end to it all. Not sure if this is a hint, but it's certainly what I got out of it.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

your reasoning makes some sense. But remember that, though it does use lore references, the riddle is not lore specific.

(also it's a very sneaky one)

    Re: The Riddle-Game

This one has me stumped. It reminds me of the Old Forest. There was some history of harm done to it and/or by it; when the hobbits (with Frodo) got to the "end of the road" and ducked under the hedge to travel through the Old Forest it had that effect on them, gave them great fatigue, and Tom Bombadil who had become "the master" rather than just a shepherd of trees had to save them and set them free from Old Man Willow who had given them a new "home" in the earth. That's the best I can make of it, but I admit it's a stretch.

Anyway, how can it be about that, when you said "not lore-specific"? But please explain what you mean by "not lore-specific" -- I mean, the riddle does mention hobbits, after all.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

what I mean by "not lore-specific" is that the answer to the riddle is not from Tolkien lore. The references to the lore in the riddle are meant to lead you, (albeit indirectly), to the answer, which is not specifically related to the lore

one quick hint; the things that the wrath/anger affects aren't necessarily the literal objects themselves.

Okay, let's see if I understand...

The home of the hobbit folk was the victim of a stifling rebuke that was stern and was spoken in haste.

A great wrath/anger set their home free from that rebuke.

It was with this same great anger/wrath that the peace-loving shepherd of trees became something complete, truly whole in all ways.

There was a choice ("that" choice) to be made at the end of the road, at which time this same wrath/anger made "it" a weariness, i.e., fatigue from the load.

    Problems to chew on:
    1. To what does "that" refer in "that choice"? I don't see any choice referenced previously in the riddle.
    2. To what does "it" refer in "made it a weariness"? Grammatically, the language of the sentence points to "that choice." But how can a choice be a weariness?
    3. To what does "the" refer in "the load"? I don't see any load referenced previously in the riddle.
    4. What is the riddle asking us to guess? What the great anger is? Who the peace loving shepherd was? The choice at the end of the road? Or the "it" that became a weariness?

    Hmm.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

bleh, maybe I made it too obscure and/or sneaky

basically your looking for what the great wrath and anger is (or is called?).. All the lines talk about the "effect" it has on each different "subject" shown in each line. (identify the subject of each line, each of which can be summed up with a single term/definition (for example; who are the peace loving sheperds of the trees? or what is a choice at the end of a road called?) )

trying to give a hint without giving too much away hehe

hmm maybe its too much of a stretch... ugh i thought it was clever when I wrote it
hopefully it'll make sense to everyone when the answer finally comes out, and not be met with annoyance hehe

...well at least it wasnt too easy..

    Oh, I get it -- it's a word riddle.

    Ire!

    Sh! -> Shire
    Ent -> Entire
    T -> Tire

Yes, a very good riddle, and definitely NOT too easy!

It may take me a while to make a new riddle. Anyone else want to try their hand? Maybe someone who hasn't had a chance to make one?

By the way Elvyen, "tire" relates to weariness in itself, but when you wrote weariness, fatigue from the load were you thinking "tire fatigue"?

    Quick classic riddle:

A box without hinges, key or lid
Yet golden treasure inside is hid...

If you can't get this one in five seconds, you fail at Riddle-gaming.
