Hobbits are an awesome race, who else can stealth, play dead among other things. A hobbit saved middle Earth. Anyway nothing I love more on the server then playing my Hobbit Burglar. Love PvP, I usually slaughter other toons as other races are just pitiful.

Make sure you're on a runekeeper when you do that to make it a complete lore-break trifecta!

Merry became a great friend of the young King Éomer, and kept in touch with Rohan during the rest of his life, visiting her often and coming to master their language. Merry noticed the similarities between the language of the rohirrim and the hobbitico dialect, and wrote a cult study entitled words and old names from the region. During the fourth age, granting them to the Hobbits King Elessar the region to the West of the County (which became known as the western border), many Hobbits moved there, including Elanor, the eldest daughter of Samsagaz Gamyi with her husband and their son Elfstan Belinfante. The place where they lived was renamed under the towers (by its proximity to the towers of Emyn Beraid). Since then, the descendants of Elfstan (towers Belinfantes) lived in this region, guarding many books of old to know, among them the book red of the Frontier West, the basis for all of the stories collected by Tolkien

Everything you just offered has utterly nothing to do with any line of thought supporting the concept of shape shifting hobbits.

This is not every other MMORPG, despite crass comments made to the contrary at times. There are just some directions so beyond the pale of even contrived explanations that they are impossible to pull-off.

Hobbits as Beorn? I can't even accept a lore-based argument to have them in the game, but since this about combat mechanics and such I don't really care at this point. Even Turbine said, correctly, that Beorn was first a man, second some other things rare enough among even that race.

The Shire was sanitized? a Surname in microfiche? I'm not trying to make fun of you, I'm just wondering what you are trying to say.

Are you advocating for both Hobbit beornings or LMs, or both?

If Turbine has decided on men only for Beorning it's not going to change, and neither will the restrictions for Hobbits becoming lore masters, for the simple reason that you need new graphics. Heck, we can't get graphic cosmetics for existing weapons and shields for guardians, much less new graphics for allowing races to play current classes.

This stuck out for me more than anything. You said "if they have the right to refuse classes". It's not a case of "if". LOTRO is Turbine's baby. They have every right to say that a race cannot play a class. Granted, they have to talk to the owners of the IP on what they do, but this is pretty much an open and shut case. If they say no Hobbit LMs or Beornings, then that is the final word.

I love hobbits, and most of my characters are hobbits, but there isn't really anything to support hobbit beornings existing. Beornings being a playable class at all still feels like a bit of a stretch to me, but I guess I can live with it.

As much as I'd love to see hobbits get access to a new class (as well as dwarves. They're both rather lacking in class choices compared to RoM and elves, and RoM are about to get yet another class exclusive to their race), it'd be tricky to make any of the remaining classes work as something playable by hobbits. Champions strike me as perhaps the most likely candidate, but it may be too bloodthirsty of a class for a hobbit.

    No...just.....

    No.

Especially in your supposed justificiation beyond Hobbit LMs. Sure, Frodo and Merry were quite clever hobbits. Were the on the same level of wisdom as the likes of Lord Elrond, who I believe the class is based off of?

    No.

No, he had never left the Shire prior to the adventure of the One Ring, and hobbits consider a walk from Hobbiton to Frogmorton an adventure. And knowledgeable about what!?! Just because he knew a little more of the outside world than most hobbits, because his uncle was an extraordinary hobbit, does not make him very knowledgeable about it, in fact, Merry, of all people, seems more knowledgeable about area's outside the Shire than Frodo early on in the Fellowship of the Ring.

He was writer and something as an expert in the legends and the language of the Elves.
No, he just spoke a little Quenya, Sindarin, understood their a little of their customs, and knew a bit of their history; I speak a little Mandarin, understand some Cantonese, know what to do, and what not, to do in a Chinese home, and know a little about Chineese mythology, does that make me an expert? Absolutely not! I just happen to know a little more than my peers.

Well that's just smart, on the most important quest in the history of the universe, you might want to know where your going.

Merry noticed the similarities between the language of the rohirrim and the hobbitico dialect, and wrote a cult study entitled words and old names from the region. Just because you write a book does not make you smart.

My roommate had a knack for poetry, even though he fell asleep in class, failed half his classes, and never to submitted anything in on time. he nearly got kicked out of school. Just because you can write poetry does not mean you can be a scholar.

I say a vehement NO to hobbits being anything but hobbits.
Tolkien himself said that hobbits never studied magic, and loremasters are all magic, wizzardy type of people. Why this is hard to fathom I do not know.

So a few of them were or became quite learned for hobbits but that really wasn't saying much. And regardless, Tolkien said hobbits didn't study magic so that'd naturally leave out all the sort of lore that the game's loremasters have supposedly been studying. Why do you think hobbits couldn't be LMs to begin with?

My hobbit minstrel is a fully ranked scholar - she can study and produce all manner of artefacts based on ancient learnings and texts. Though of course magic does not exist in LOTRO - Lore Masters having studied nature and the ability to manipulate it, in the context of this game to what degree of separation is there between a fully ranked scholar crafter and a LM in terms of learning?

It's never been either particularly credible or consistent to pretend that it's not magic, especially not once they'd made the LM flashier and more 'wizardy'. Whatever you want to call it, hobbits are plainly not intended to have any esoteric or mystical powers so it's only right for them to be excluded from some classes. That's your 'degree of separation', stopping well short of blatantly taking the mickey which is what hobbit LMs would be.

That's your 'degree of separation', stopping well short of blatantly taking the mickey which is what hobbit LMs would be.
Regardless of whether it is credible or not, the design and world ethos of this game is that "magic" in the classic sense was the preserve of the Valar and as such is not accessible to player characters. Of course certain famous individuals were able to manipulate it - Feanor and the Silmarils, Celebrimbor the three rings of power. However that's beside the point. LOTRO does not have magic, otherwise Turbine would have turned the taps on full and given us Mages, Warlocks, Illusionists and so forth. There can't be any shades of grey on this matter.

So, the question I have concerns scholarly study. Someone earlier in this thread made the point that hobbits, except for two notable exceptions were not learned. Yet in the context of this game my hobbit minstrel is a fully ranked scholar. She can understand and interpret ancient texts and other artefacts. So if this game allows my hobbit to be a master of lore, then the argument that hobbits should not be LMs because they were just a bunch of illiterate farmers and yeomen does not stand up to scrutiny.

Ultimately, this is where the inconsistencies within the game make it almost impossible to stand up any argument based on "lore" - there are just so many exceptions to the rule. If the lore were to be applied properly, then my hobbit minstrel should not be a scholar. Such professions should be limited to Elves and Men. Indeed if anything hobbits should be limited to farmers, cooks, tailors and woodworkers as being lore appropriate professions. Of course adhering to the lore would mean that pet huorns and Beornings would also be rolled back, however as those are considered appropriate then are hobbit LMs really such a departure?

I think it is probably the result of a very poor translation service. It might almost be better if this thread was in the OP's native language.
