Feedback: Dev Diary – Update 13 Quest Notes

It's been a long time coming, but here we are at the end of Volume III: Allies of the King, and in this edition of Quest Notes we'll take a look back at what it's taken to get here before looking forward to Book 14, 'The Waters of Isengard’ and beyond!

    Read the Quest Notes!

Number of times a character's name is an anagram of Gortheron: 1
Number of times that mattered: 0
lol By far the best statistic. ^_^

The artwork of the chicken riding the horse was too funny!

    1. No lunch deliveries – By this point in your development, your character is a hero, and most of the people you encounter will know it. I think there were good reasons to begin ‘Mines of Moria’ with the possibly-infamous ‘lunch deliveries’ to the dwarves of the Iron Garrison, but Volume IV is a different creature and those reasons don’t apply. Heroes only!
    2. Fewer phasing companions – One of the goals of ‘Allies of the King’ was to give the player a fellowship of NPC companions who would travel from town to town, exploring their relationships and providing a familiar group of characters to interact with at each new region: first the Grey Company, and then later Horn, Nona, Corudan, and Gléowine. I liked the idea of creating a new fellowship for this stretch of the story, but like the capital-letter Fellowship, each individual member now has their own path to walk. In Volume IV, the story will have a new direction and structure.
    3. A sense of adventure – I want this Volume to return to that feeling from the early days of exploring an unfamiliar territory and experiencing unexpected adventure, with iconic threats and dangers lurking around every corner. The Epic Story will remain soloable, but I hope to add optional challenges and secrets for those who are willing to tackle them.

I think a lot of people will be glad at #1. I personally didn't mind those quests. They were quick and easy. Our characters may be heroes now, but we weren't born as royalty. I always felt it would be snobbish to refuse to do simple tasks like that. We can't all be Aragorns of the land. I think #3 is a good thing as well.

Ha!! Aragorn wouldn't have batted an eye at delivering lunches. The man went on history's longest "Escort Duty", which many of us loathe. Whatever was needed to get people ready.

Very good read this. Especially the statistics and tidbits of information about how Ergothorn/Gortheron came to be.

As for Volume IV: This sounds like a good change of premises MoL is going for. I like how Volume I-III all feel different from each other and I'll be happy to engage in another adventure. I personally never had a problem with food-delivery quests: Entering a new part of the world usually means that no one there knows of our characters' doings. I just don't believe Middle-Earth News Network has delivered the info that we smacked Mordirith on the head to Dol Amroth yet - and so I'm perfectly fine with building my reputation anew. But being welcomed as heroes; why not I'll take it as well

But sadly MoL spoiled the Volume IV reward already: War-horse-chicken-play! (Maybe we'll see fellowships full of chickens on horses leaving Bree-land to seek asylum in Gondor to escape a spike in chicken-hockey popularity? Who knows!)

The big question is, can we use those Mario-styled tunnels to enter the now flooded platform just west of the Orthanc tower? Maybe to do some snorkeling?

Oh come on! Its a short leap from "Chicken Hockey" to "Chicken Polo"! Guess I'll have to start making warhammers after all!

Really not the right place for this :P

    *SPOILERS*

As for Quest Notes, there seems to be a loose end (at least one) from Book 14 - Horn and Nona were sent after a group of Falcon Clan raiders, and as yet haven't returned, yet we've already killed off Lheu Brenin, so I'm a tad confused as to what they are actually doing. Hoping to see this resolved in the near future

Thanks for the journey, it;s been great fun and my favourite part of LOTRO. Oh no my journey companions will be left behind. Fare thee well my fellow travellers.

PS Can I have a portrait of Nona et al for my Kin wall too?

    Looking Forward to Book IV

I've recently reread the trilogy and am definitely wondering what you are going to make of Book IV. I don't imagine that we can follow Frodo and Sam very closely but surely by the end, we should meet Faramir.

One leftover from volume III needs resolution: The Grey Company. When last we saw them, they were essentially dissolved, each going his own way. Yet, by the beginning of Book V, they need to arrive at Edoras at least looking like a fighting company, ready to follow their leader. As it stands now, it would take a miracle for that to happen.

While I don't mind traveling without Nona and company, I'd like to find out the end of their stories. I'd also like to hear what happened to the four riders.

I'm certainly excited about the changes to Trollshaws, North Downs and Misties. But I suspect that the biggest change to my low level strategy will be the removal of maximums for the task boards. That will definitely make earning Kin with the various factions a bit easier.

Thanks very much for all your hard work to give us this continuing pleasure!

That's what I thought as well when I read the above comment. Aragorn is a good-shepherd type of king who sees it as his duty to serve his people any way he can.

Hehe, I didn't mind either, but gotta say that dwarves and elves really know how to treat the hero who stopped Angmar: dwarves put you collecting goat droppings to a huge pile, and elves want you to pick up orc poo
Laurelin freeps: Tamien (R8 Warden) - Tamieth (Hunter) - Tamia (Minstrel) - Tanie (R9 Champion) - Netta (Lore-master)
