    Accounts for New Players

Welcome to The Lord of the Rings Online.

This guide is for assisting new players with the registering of game accounts, and is split up into multiple parts.

    1) Creating Your New Account (this post below)
    2) Subscribing: VIP Membership
    3) Membership Tiers
    4) Content Purchases - Expansions
    5) Content Purchases - Quest Packs
    6) Content Purchases - Instances, raids and skirmishes

    Creating Your New Account

Signing up for an account is free, and no payment details need to be entered (please see membership tiers below for more on subscriptions).
To register a new account, visit https://signup.lotro.com/lotro.php

If you wish to play without a subscription (Free-to-play), the only details needed are a username, password, email address and a few personal details. Once you have entered and submitted those, your account is created. To install the game you will first need to download the installer for your platform, this will take care of everything for you, just follow the on screen instructions. Downloads can take a few hours depending on connection speed.

Once installed, you can run the game launcher (this may update itself) and enter your username and password. Usernames are stored so you don't have to re-enter them each time you log in, passwords however are not.

After logging in, you will be prompted to select a server which will become home to any characters you create. You can find out more about each of the servers over on the forums.

    Subscribing: VIP Membership

    Subscribing: VIP Membership

Whilst a subscription is not needed to play LotRO, Turbine offer a wide range of perks to players who choose to subscribe.
More can be found below about the different membership tiers.

If you wish to create a subscription or enter a product key from a LotRO Market purchase, you can do so through https://myaccount.turbine.com. The login details are the same as those you registered and access the game with.

Product keys (eg. expansions) can be entered into box (1) - though this is not essential in creating a subscription.
If you wish to create a new subscription, then you can click the 'Upgrade Now!' button (2).

Subscriptions will roll continuously unless cancelled. You can opt for monthly, 3 monthly, 6 monthly, or yearly by selecting the one you prefer (3). If you have a game time card, here is where you would also enter the key. Note that the prices above may vary.

Lastly to create your subscription you will need to enter your credit card details (4) or alternatively, link your Turbine account to your PayPal account.
Once this is done, you will enjoy all the perks of a VIP membership.

    Membership Tiers

    Membership Tiers

LotRO offers three tiers of membership: VIP, Premium or Free-to-play (F2P).

VIP membership is a subscription based model, offering the most complete LotRO gaming experience, with access to all original Shadows of Angmar quests and instances (approx levels 1-50) and 500 Turbine Points per month to spend at the in-game store. Expansions and their content however must still be purchased. Players at this tier enjoy the least amount of restrictions to their account. Subscriptions can be paid for using game time cards, credit cards, or PayPal. Subscriptions set up with credit card or PayPal will roll automatically until cancelled, and you have the choice of paying every: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months.

Premium membership does not require a subscription, and is applied automatically through the spending of real money - either through the purchasing of Turbine Points, expansions, or previous (but since cancelled) subscriptions. As an example, a new player joining without a subscription plan who purchases Turbine Points to spend in the store will be automatically upgraded to Premium membership. Likewise, a veteran player who cancels their subscription will be downgraded from VIP to Premium membership. Note: Any purchases made to your account (e.g. expansions, additional character slots and so on) remain when downgrading.

Free-to-play membership is the basic access plan. You do not need to spend any money to enjoy the game at this tier. You will be able to enjoy questing at the lower levels before deciding if you want to commit to the game.

Premium and Free-to-play members are restricted to quests in Ered Luin, The Shire, Bree-land and Lone-lands (approx levels 1-25), however quest packs can be purchased in-game to provide access to quests in other regions.
The chart below compares the three membership tiers.

    Content Purchases - Expansions

    Content Purchases - Expansions

Expansions provide quests for a particular part of the game, along with other perks. Each expansion must be purchased to gain full access as newer expansions do not provide access to older content. Once an expansion is purchased and the key applied to your account, the content is yours to access no matter what membership tier your account is, or may be in the future. Expansion packs are never removed during account downgrading. The quest packs for most expansions can be purchased separately. It is up to you whether you want to buy the quest pack alone or go with the full expansion. You will not need to download any additional data for expansions purchased as they are already included in the game client, purchase merely provides access to that data

Below you will find all the expansions available, and what you get with them. More information on quest packs can be found in the next post.

    Shadows of Angmar (Levels 1-50)
The original game released in spring 2007 (not an expansion). Shadows of Angmar is no longer available for purchase, however quest packs are available for the regions as separate or as part of the 'Eriador Bundle'. Eriador quest access is given to VIP members with no additional purchase. Quest packs included in the Eriador Bundle are: Angmar, Enedwaith, Eregion, Evendim, Forochel, Misty Mountains, North Downs and Trollshaws. Quests for Ered Luin, The Shire, Bree-land and Lone-lands are also part of the original game, but do not require purchasing. The 'Eriador Bundle' also gives access to thirteen instances and three raids.
Instances: Barad Gúlaran, Carn Dûm, Urugarth, Sâri-surma, Lost Temple, The Northcotton Farm, Stoneheight, The Library at Tham Mírdain, The School at Tham Mírdain, Glinghant, Ost Elendil, Haudh Valandil and Fornost
Raids: The Rift of Nûrz Ghâshu, Helegrod and Ost Dunhoth

    Mines of Moria (Levels 50-60)
The first expansion for LotRO, released in fall 2008. It includes the Mines of Moria quest pack, 2 additional character slots, access to the Rune-keeper and Warden classes, and Skirmish max trait rank 15. All of these benefits are available to purchase separately, players wanting access to the quest pack for example, can buy that alone without the additional classes etc.
Mines of Moria quest pack also includes seven instances and two raids (included whether bought as part of the expansion or the quest pack alone).
Instances: Dark Delvings, Fil Gashan, Skûmfil, The Sixteenth Hall, The Forges of Khazad-dûm, The Grand Stair and The Forgotten Treasury

    Siege of Mirkwood (Levels 60-65)
The second expansion for LotRO, released in fall 2009. It includes the Mirkwood quest pack, and Skirmish max trait rank 25. Mirkwood quest pack also includes four instances and one raid.
Instances: Dungeons of Dol Guldur, Sword-hall of Dol Guldur, Warg-pens of Dol Guldur and Sammath-Gûl

    Rise of Isengard (Levels 65-75)
The third expansion for LotRO, released in fall 2011. It includes the Isengard quest pack, skirmish trait max rank 35, four instances and two raids. Note that the Isengard quest pack does not include the instances or raids - they must be purchased separately if you take the quest pack instead of the full expansion.
Instances: Dargnákh Unleashed, Fangorn's Edge, Pits of Isengard and The Foundry
Raids: Draigoch's Lair and The Tower of Orthanc

Helm's Deep is available from LotRO Market as a standalone only, in either base or premium editions. When purchasing from the LotRO Market you will be given a product key which you apply to your Turbine account. Helm's Deep expansion can also be purchased at the in-game store for Turbine Points.

    Quad Pack (Levels 50-85)

    Content Purchases - Quest Packs

    Content Purchases - Quest Packs

Quest packs can be purchased as standalone, without players needing to invest in the full price of an expansion. Quest packs will include access to all the quests of the given region, and in most cases access to any relevant instances and raids. I'd ditch the graphic since it's out of date in places and simply wrong in others.

    a) The lvl cap is currently 95.
    b) Crafting goes to Tier 9.
    c) Quest packs: "5**" ? o.O (1) Ered Luin, (2) the Shire, (3) Breeland, (4) Lone Lands, (5) ... ?

I know, but it's the only one Turbine currently use officially. If they ever decide to update it, the image is linked.

That's irrelevant. It is wrong and if you want this thread to be of use, it should not be included.
Instead, simply make your own accurate list of the differences of the account types.

There is a small error in your guide Galu.

    Regarding the Subscription Part

Product keys (eg. expansions) can be entered into box (1) - though this is not essential in creating a subscription.
If you wish to create a new subscription, then you can click the 'Upgrade Now!' button (2).
Under NO circumstances should you put Expansion or Quest Pack Codes in box (1)
You would only use box (1) if you were adding a new game to your Turbine Account - ie DDO

If you do so you will create a seperate game account which will fail, as you cannot have two lotro games under one account

If you are adding a Quest Pack, Expansion, Subscription Package or any code for Lotro, you should select box (2) - Upgrade

Sorry but this is incorrect. The upgrade button is just for subscribing or adding game time. For VIP players the upgrade button is not present on the account homepage as it is not needed. I have three accounts and have purchased every expansion for each of them, and always put the product key in the box (1).

I've put in a custom table. Please let me know if you spot any more mistakes.

    More changes:

f2p accounts can use mail, they just can't mail money (they can mail "bags of silver" and such, premium and VIP can mail money). -Note that "limited" in premium kicks in when you send too much mail to more than one account. You get to wait a few minutes if you are dumping all your loot across your kin.

Crafting: while what it says is true, VIP get unlimited guild advancement. Premium and f2p are capped at gaining "expert" guild level and can purchase global unlocks (per guild). Note that if you let your VIP subscription slide you don't lose your guild status, but your formerly capped status can fall behind.

    Expansions:
Shadows of Angmar: This should be explicitly mentioned as free, preferably as something other than an expansion. It doesn't make sense now as an expansion (it did back before f2p when you bought it as a box).

Made changes to the table to reflect the mail and crafting.
For SoA, I've changed the wording a bit and colour of the title. It already mentioned that VIPs have access to the quests, but F2P and Premium will need to buy the quest packs.

Adjust inventory to slots instead of bags?

Thanks for this excellent overview! Although I've been playhing this game for quite some time already, this overview is still helpful as a reminder

You are so rude...the list is extremely helpful even if not quite accurate because what it does is remind people what's out there. Most would be able to figure out that the level cap is 95 as well and adapt the list themselves. Have a nice day.

It wouldn't hurt to add this to the Player-Created-Guides-and-FAQs forum topic as well.

Isn't the cosmetic system 2 slots? I guess the third one you mean is the equipment slot which is not considered outfit even though you can equip it.

I think I copied this from the original table Turbine used. I've purchases additional cosmetic slots on all my accounts a while back and I honestly can't remember what the *correct* value for that one should be Maybe I'll make a free account some time to find out, unless anyone happens to know for sure?

Just a small thing I'd like to add: Premiums and F2P get 3 bags' worth of inventory to start with, which would correspond to 45 slots, not 15.

All in all, good work. Hopefully, this will save new players some confusion.

You start with two in addition to the Equipment tab. I haven't purchased any additional and that is what is unlocked on my account.
