No one seems too eager to riddle...but since I've got another..:

    Tall I am young
    Short I am old
While with life I do glow
    Manwë's breath is my foe

All right, this is the best I can think of, alas:

    Then I soared miles above
    without understanding
    towns and farms
    wagons and ships.

    Now I move only inches
    but understand all.

    No, it's not a tree.

The butterfly guess was closer, in that the answer has to do with a flying creature, or part of a flying creature, at least.

Another clue: the second home of the item is a scriptorium, a room where monks or (less commonly) nuns, or students, learned how to copy texts from one manuscript to another.

    I think I have it: a feather.

Part of a bird, now knows everything because 'tis used by said monks as a quill-pen when writing.

    Good riddle that one

    OK, here's the next one:

    I am a climber, a swimmer and a flier.
    What am I?

    Nope.

The riddle gives three examples of something in The Shire.

This is a tough one. Is it a squirrel? Hm... no... squirrels don't swim, or fly much.

    Not close I'm afraid.

The answer isn't an animal, in fact they are not even alive.

Hmm it can't be shoes cuz their aren't many of them in the shire any way and they don't swim or fly. Is it a cloud, its reflection swims in the water, it flies and it climbed to higher altitudes(lame, I know).

Not clouds. And definitely not shoes in The Shire!

Another clue: The riddle could also be written as "I am a plant, a fish and a fire-breather. What am I?"

Is it Shire pubs? The Ivy Bush, the Golden Perch, and the Green Dragon, specifically?

    Correct

Wasn't sure if I'd made that riddle too obtuse or not. The 'climber' for The Ivy Bush was a bit lame but was all I could come up with.

    You're up ferdinanda.

Well, here's an easy one (since the answer is out there in the interwebs)-- with a nod to the land of Tamriel, currently experiencing the wondrous arrival of many heroes:

A hobbit's pie was stolen. The elf claims that the man is guilty. The man says that the dwarf did it. The goblin swears he didn't steal the pie. The dwarf says that the man is lying. If only one of these speaks the truth, who stole the hobbit's pie?

    goblin?

I say that knowing that if I get it right, I'm gonna have a hell of a time coming up with another riddle...

Yes, goblin is right, Mulkfather! It would be nice if you can come up with a riddle, but if you take too long someone else may jump in.
