Thread: We Need a Banjo

    We Need a Banjo

I am currently rolling a Dwarf Minstrel who will be the back woods cousin of my rather citified Guardian main.

Sure the lute or bagpipes are great, but what would really be spot-on is a nice twangy banjo playing bluegrass or the theme from Deliverance.

Any chance we might get a new instrument?

Personally I'm hoping for sustained stringed instruments like the fiddle, violin, cello, etc.

This. We need these WAY more than a banjo.

    Re: We Need a Banjo

Agreed on the need for bowed instruments. Banjo can be simulated rather well on lute as implemented (witness the large amount of bluegrass!). Strings are harder--you can sometimes use winds, but the sound is not right. It sounds like a wind ensemble playing an arrangement instead.

    Re: We Need a Banjo

Yup, we have been begging for strings for literally years now, and it just doesn't seem to be in the works. Very sad. The one "excuse" that I have been given for not having strings in game is the poor sound of the available midi bites. Not so much the sound bites themselves, but the way that each one sounds very different when used with different note lengths. ex., a note may sound great at a 2 second length, say 2 beats, but if increased to 4 beats or 4 seconds, will sound not so good. Again this was the excuse that was posted years ago for why we don't have a fiddle or viol in the music system. I think that we should have them any way..... I mean really, there are some very good Bagpipe music out there for us to play, but there is also some very bad bagpipe music out there for us. if we can even get 1/4 of our files using a stringed instruments to sound good, I think we should have them.

Seriously! Some of the things people do with the in game bagpipe should be considered human rights violations.

    /soapbox

I desperately want some cello and violin action. I still don't know how I managed to make a pretty good Beethoven's 6th without it.

Are violins really Tolkienesque? Are banjos even? I'd be cool with a harmonica.

One of the dwarves on the Quest of Erebor played a bowed instrument according to The Hobbit. Forget which one offhand... it's been mentioned elsewhere in this forum.

violins were used in europe as early as the 9th century so i can easily see them fitting into middle earth.

banjos on the other hand...were not seen (much less used) in the uk until the mid to late 17th century.

with middle earth being set in the middle ages (5th to 15th centuries) and with banjos evoking a certain american feel to them...i just dont see them fitting in very well.

    as an example....

    From "The Hobbit"

"Kili and Fili rushed for their bags and brought back little fiddles"

"Excuse me, I left mine in the porch! Just bring mine in with you," said Thorin. "They came back with viols as big as themselves"

    both string instruments....

Hopefully with advent of the store, more instruments can be brought in, even possibly variants of existing intruments.

I would love a to see a full selection of brass, wind and string instruments

In addition, the beginning of the Silmarillion likens the voices of the Ainur to "flutes and lutes and viols" (if I remember correctly) and that was meant to be a history compiled by actual peoples of Middle-earth.

Not that it should matter, but sadly Turbine does not have rights to Silmarillion. but again, should not matter in this case.

Also, in The Return of the King, Trumpets are mentioned a few times.....of course a trumpet back in the medieval days had no valves and I realize the horn is probably what Turbine will say is a trumpet, but I think they can put a proper trumpet, (think Bugle) in the game.

Viols have to come first. After all,
It's not just a good idea: it's the lore.

    Re: We Need a Banjo

I'd love to see more instruments... and more that are available for players without needing to be trained by a Minstrel. Lutes are very good at simulating a Banjo. I have a really fast bluegrass song (almost all notes are 1/32) and it sounds great in-game. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing a Banjo in the game even if it might not be completely lore appropriate. It's still somewhat close. A Viol and Harmonica would make more sense and even a Cello would be good. Btw, trombones fit the time period as well, but I'm not sure I'd want to see an actual trombone in the game. It doesn't exactly seem like a Middle Earth instrument regardless how old it is.

    Yes

Sustained strings, are top on my list.

Secondly, I would love to see 2 non instrument commands be added in with midi voice, that would allow sync with music.
One would be /sing ( which would have voice of ooh's and aww's ) the other would be /whistle for whistle tones.

Banjo is basically a lute. You can play a banjo song on the lute and get most of the same sounds.
If you want Hillbilly instrument, specially for a dwarf, I'd love to see a "Jug" as an instrument. hehehe

Banjo, fiddle, violin...I would appreciate any / all of these as additions to the music system!

I, love a good, merry Mustelid praise song. The Joban is marvelous for complimenting their gruff growlie voices.
