Are you refering to Saberhagen's Book of sword series? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_Swords
or maybe Fritz Leiber's Sword series featuring Fafhrd and Grey Mouser? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fafhrd_and_the_Gray_Mouser ?
Or something else?
