What I find hard to believe is that many people in this topic are totally ignoring Sapence's warnings and continuing to use signatures he has stated are not allowed/desired.

You will all lose them if you don't start to pay attention to him.
How to get help on the Tech Forums and how to contact Turbine

Please reply to the topic or PM me if a solution I posted works for you: The more data I can gather the better I can help.

No, but then just like I don't see funny cat videos on arxiv, I don't expect things that are not forums to have forum signatures in them.

Yes, tell me again how a couple of 50kb images will slow down your 20Mbps connection. And the worst thing that can happen if an image hosting site slows down, the images will take slightly longer to load (perhaps even up to - gasp - one full second!).

I do not change the refresh rate or prevent it from entering the browsers caché. In other words, it is acting as any other image. Which are normally re-checked by the browser for changes once per. day.

If used in the dynamic version, the image is truly quite slow to start downloading. As it has to pull data from off-site first, which takes about 10 secs. But browsers (mine at least) can initiate several images at once. So unless there are many illustrations/images in the posts as well, it should not prevent u from reading the page.

Consider in large portions of the world where you are capped, HARD CAPPED, and metered in how many total GB you are permitted to transfer (through any means) in a given month before they shut off your internet (large portions of Europe, Australia, etc) until next month. Also consider how many people do not have the top end of their local provider's service level. I know a lot of people who are running at barely DSL speeds and some actually running speeds that make a 1GB connection look like science fiction.

Sorry, but I hope everyone realizes that this is all academic and ultimately the rule will be what it will be. I'm trying to help.

Sadly when asking that people police themselves... well this IS the internets.
And also saying "My house = my rules" doesn't register with many.

Thanks for the effort though and let's hope the community here can grok it.

Yet, I bet every last one would say the same thing if roles reversed (their house their rules).

I watch these drops of rude water slowly filling the beaker. Eventually it will spill over, in the form of Sapience declaring, "that's it, I've had enough, no longer going to bat for you, no images in sigs, period." Just don't understand how some people don't get any of the nuance of the situation.

We weren't talking about bandwidth caps but feel free to derail with something equally laughable. Let's say you're capped to 100Gb a month (lowest limit I could find on Google for main US ISPs - none of the countries I've lived in had bandwidth caps so gotta improvise), you'd still need to load signatures over 2 million times before you gotta worry.

But seriously, in 2013, where every single webpage is covered with graphics, embedded videos and interactive streams of all kinds, 50Kb images on a cheapo forum is something that needs to be addressed?

I also know people who find low contrast text on dark background very uncomfortable to read. But I thought we had already established such fringe minorities don't matter

Oh, you have much to learn about rental properties, sir. Both the literal kind, and the figurative type to which you refer.

I wanted to add a smiley but that would have been two smileys in one post and that's just unnaceptable. And you're suddenly quite pragmatic for someone who just equated contractual relationships to how one interacts with a toddler.

To quickly get this thread back on track, which originally was (and is) an announcement I can now say that the signature generator is reprogrammed to conform with the forum rules... I hope.

I had to remove the LotRO logo. Which btw is not a statement. But we should all know which game we are playing here anyway

U will have to consider which font to use if u have a long text line, as space is a bit limited.

This also leaves out most hope of have a crafting skill in it

Now to reprogram my own kinship signature. Work, work, work...

It is explained below the generator itself. Just scroll down a bit. If u find it unclear, then pls ask again.

And notice that the CharacterID is for GuildPortal characters only at this time.

Thanks so much for giving an attractive option for replacing the old and now dead charsigs! Not to mention actually making an effort to have them conform to forum rules and regulations, so we are more likely to be able to keep them.

When I went digging through the vast and eldritch world known as the internet to see if I could find a way to replace my old (and now slightly less missed) sig, most of the sig generators I found out there were all combination of ugly, way too big, or only available to certain people. I especially love that I can use my toon's actually face for it, and not a default generic, like with the original signatures.

I really hope things work out and we get to keep these in the long run.

Appreciate Sapience going to bat for us and finding a way to allow images, and appreciate the author for editing his creator to keep these within the specs Sapience gave!

Thanks a lot for the quick fix! Also, the added thickness to the text outline helps a lot. Great work!

Unfortunately caps are coming back these days. Around here, it's not possible to find a really uncapped mobile data plan, and the major telco even wants to restore caps for hardlines.
Used to play: 85 Champ / Captain / Runekeeper / Guardian, Guild Master of everything but cooking.
Playing now: Hellcat / King Tiger / GW Panther / IS / KV-5 / M4 Sherman and more

Then why don't you turn on the feature built into VB that allows the user to disable seeing images in signatures and so forth? That way those with low bandwidth issues can CHOOSE without it punishing other people.

Oh wait ... it's already turned on ... Forum Actions >> General Settings >> Scroll down to Thread display Options .. there are three options there 1. Show signatures, 2. Show Avatars and 3. Show Images. If people really do have issues with bandwidtht hey can just turn these options off.

You're trying to enforce arbitrary rules on people when they're not needed because the software you are using has ways to overcome these issues built in.

Quite the opposite is true. You are trying to force people to use a forum (a rp-related, at that) without signature images at all, just so that some people can have ridiculous large images in signatures.
Right now it seems to be pretty much possible that images will stay allowed in signatures - if everybody plays nice, that is - with the result, that everyone can have and see nice images, hopefully even dynamically created ones, in the signatures. Please don't destroy this hope.

I believe you. But I just checked the headers your server is sending to the browser, using firebugs Net-tab.
    As an example: http://www.djelle.dk/sig-lotro/images/bg-mask.png
When I load this image, it's cache is set by your server to expire in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 20 seconds, e.g. "Tue Aug 06 2013 11:37:59 GMT+0200"

When I however load this image: http://www.djelle.dk/sig-ror.png/?&i...nship%20Leader &rank=no
it's cache header is set to expire on: Thu Jan 01 1970 01:00:00 GMT+0100

I can't venture a guess why your server does send an expires-header with the date set to the 'zero-date', but it does.
You can probably override this rogue behaviour by adding this line to your php-script (this creates a cache-time of "1 hour, 3 minutes, 20 seconds", like your server does for normal images:
    Code:
    header('Expires: '.gmdate('D, d M Y H:i:s \G\M\T', time() + 3800));
The headers must be set before any data is sent to the browser - I usually set these headers at the top, just behind preliminary checks like login, valid parameter, etc.

Ahh I see. This I can explain. Because bg-mask.png is an actual image uploaded to the server. Where as the other is of course generated with PHP. Since this is my first project to create an image like this, I guess I might have missed a thing or two. Like setting an expiration date which I didn't know I should Ty taking the time to check this. I will fix it at the double

    Edit: Is fixed.

Some feedback regarding the fonts and style of lettering in that generator: It would be nice if some sleeker, cleaner fonts were added as a choice, the choice to not have the lettering in bold and also I don't think lettering needs a black outline around it *and* a drop shadow. The text comes across as harsh, quite heavy and a bit dated imo. Kudos to all the choices you gave people regarding the background images, especially with making them very LOTROy.
