Roleplaying, more or less, is pretending/acting/writing out your character(s) as if they are actually in the world you are playing in. For this game, you write out the characters as if they are actually in Middle-earth (as interpreted by Turbine-- the degree of changes Turbine has made for the game from Tolkien's Middle-earth are acknowledged to several different degrees by different players).

You can technically roleplay on any server, but the two most populated English servers with RP are Landroval and Laurelin. The differences between the two have been outlined in several other threads found on this subforum.

Think of it as improvisational acting. That might help.

For example I own an Elf Lore-master. She is now a character in LotRO (though...she isn't canon...as much as I would love my Elf to be Middle-earth canon, it just isn't) with a past, etc.

So she comes from Mirkwood, her name is Gharaen, her father is...bla, bla, blah. She mostly spends her time in Bree after fleeing her homeland because of the Necromancer.

But not everybody has the same story. Each character has a different personality too, just like a book/movie/etc.

Welcome to LOTRO and RPing! No need to apologize.

I tend to think of MMO RP as a cross between improv acting and sheer fiction writing. Like in acting, you (the player) can "get in character" by thinking like (to some extent, pretending to be) your in-game person. You also get to interact with other people's characters and react to what they do at near real-time speed (slightly slower because it takes a little longer to type than speak - unless you have lightning fingers!).

Unlike acting, though, a good RPer needs to convey emotions through text. It's imperative to understand the mechanics of written description and dialogue. You also need to have a good sense of separation between you and your character. Your characters (this goes for any fiction) should never be just a translation of yourself into text - that is, you shouldn't think of an RP character as me in a MMO setting. In fact, the more you write, the more you'll find your characters going their own directions and becoming completely different than yourself. They'll have their own stories, their own lives, and their own ways of looking at the world.

In LOTRO, you could also look at RP as a form of collaborative fan-fiction. A lot of us are here because we love Tolkien. We could write stories in Middle-earth alone - some of us do that, too - but it's heaps of fun to write with friends.

    You speak the truth.
