And "fantasy ranger" is a very very very popular archetype among players.
Hence the popularity of the Hunter.
    We have a winner.

Same here, Elben. The ranger is the closest I could get to being a ranger that travels alone in the wilds. Half-elf ranger in EQ. Hunter in WoW. Hunter in LotR beta and Angmar.

Simply put, because Hunters are bad ###. You know any other class that rains death upon their foes?
The bow was the most influential weapon in history. It took man from swinging a sharp edge to shooting thing at 40+ yards out with ease.
Hastings, Mongols, Chinese (Repeating crossbow in the Great wall). The bow was THE weapon you needed to win before the gun

    Because:

    • People think they look cool with a bow.
    • Don't have to feel the terror of the mob getting personal with him (on mele range).
    • Don't have higher responsabilities (no protect the fellows <tank>, no heals, no cc, no debuffs) only dps.
    • All games have archers so there isn't much new to learn about them.
Is this Alternate Playable Character Disorder? :

This. Since lotro has no way of measuring dps in raids hunter just feels the easier choice for most players (although it actually isn't). No responsibilities, no hating from raid members if you don't perform. This is not the case in other games obv where your dps are showing on screen and you have to maximize with perfect rotations. Also hunter gets free and easy traveling plus easy and fast leveling. Also note: Female elves with bows
