    Evernight Think Tank

    Hi guys.

A comment on globallff about how Evernight's population is dying sparked an interesting discussion on how to revive it. We spoke for over an hour about different strategies, and here are some that seemed popular:

-Use the forums more, and use them to promote the server to new players
-Host a unique event, something like Weatherstock on Landroval
-Spend time between raids in Bree, meeting, greeting and helping newbies
-Form grinding groups to make deeding more interesting for F2P players
-Create "Aid Packages" for new players
-Try to get Evernight marked as the recommended server for a month or two

Obviously not all are viable and it would take a lot of work, but I am confident that we can reserect this great server.

Another idea I thought of was to try to get as many people onto globallff as possible. Many players choosing a server use the size of that room to judge server population.

Please feel free to post feedback and ideas in this forum. I might create a chat room exclusively for this sort of thing, depending on the reaction

Forth Everknights, let us take back what is rightfully ours!

Yes, I saw the doom-mongering that you were all generating in Global yesterday... Though the only way I can judge the server population is through my kin, we've only been seeing a couple more than usual (out of about 10-20 active per night) not logging on, and I believe that this is because we're in the lull between updates, when its always quiet. That said, some of your measures are appropriate and good (though Evernight players seem to have a low BS acceptance level...)

    - Forums aren't really the best way, as new players aren't often forum checkers, they just jump straight in to the game.
    - Unique events are a good idea - this will bring players across on alts from different servers and they may enjoy what they find.
    - Who do you plan to get to do this sponsored low player help? There's nothing in Bree which is beyond solo difficulty, though I do help if a low level kinny wants to run a GB. The best thing that we can do is to advertise the globalLFF channel, so that everyone has access to advice even when in an underpopulated area.
    - Grinding groups - you're not referring to the iPhone app are you? :P Seriously, how would you do this without simply using global as people do now to advertise their deeds that they don't want to grind solo?
    - Aid packages? Elaborate a bit. Because the stuff that you get per level up until 20 iirc from those 'gifts' from Turbine are pretty decent.
    - Do recommended servers still exist? If so I hadn't noticed :P

The aid-packages I give my friends and kinnies
usually consist of 500 silver and help running through
Haudh Iarchith a couple of times. It gives them the
ability to get a mount (deed+rep TP).

Also some crafted gear around level 30 where I find
the quest-stuff to be a bit lacking.

The grinding groups you(Taravan) are talking about is usually
groups of 85ers trying to get their virtues done. I think
OP is talking more about lowlevel easy deeds that for new
players may feel like a grind (telling em at that time about
Forochel deeds is a sure-fire way to make em quit), but
which they REALLY need to do, not for virtues, but for TP
so they can afford their next questpack.

Biggest issue is that these players, unless brought here by
friends, have no knowledge of channels like GlobalLFF and
    are therefore hard to reach.

Sometimes I wish we could have a Server MotD, like the
kinship MotD, maybe advising people to join GlobalLFF.
This would however flare up the fight between Pure-LFF
    and Wannabe-social-in-GLFF's...

    ./joinchannel GobalSocial?

    Thumbs up Global Social

I agree with that idea. Global Lff is supposed to be used for Looking For Fellowship (hence the name) but if we create another channel and advertise it enough, we might be on to something

    Nice thinking EvAmy!
Can't wait for a better Evernight.

    Thanks for the replies.

    In reply to Tirian:
-I don't know, I recall seeing quite a few "Which server is the best to start on?" threads
-That was what I thought. We thought of possibly a foot race along the Path of the Fellowship, but that wouldn't be feasible due to Moria's entry conditions. Another idea I thought of was a player-run, one-day festival.
-To clarify what I meant by "help", I mainly meant to clarify things for them, show them the ropes of game mechanics, that sort of thing. I know that I for one wouldn't bother helping with low-level quests after doing them many times
-By this, I was thinking some kind of scheduled deeding groups for 1-30 deeds, on a rotating basis. To make things more interesting we could try, for example, saying that lvl 50+ characters must use cosmetic weapons (tools from mathom society, festival flowers, beer mugs, etc.)
-This one wasn't my idea, but from what I understand it's like what EvAmy says: some armour, some cash, and a helping of advice or quest aid
-They do, and it really helps from what I've heard. The latest recommended server (Withywindle iirc) has apparently had a decent spike in population afaik

EvAmy, that is exactly what I was thinking. The deeds we would help with would be the starter areas and Lone-lands, for the TP for their 30-40 quest pack. And to answer your question, I think the best thing would be for those giving advice to new players to tell them to join global, be it social or lff.

Maybe it would be best to do as you say, separate the social and the lff. There is nothing stopping people from joining both, raiders will be able to call for groups uninterrupted, and we can have a channel to chat without inconveniencing others. Excellent thinking!

Before I forget: Garth Agarwen groups
Big help in showing people what they are supposed to
do in a group and another source of (rep-)TP.

I may have to get my second Guardian up to that level
then lock him with a Stone of the Turtle though...

Sounds like a great idea EvAmy!

A quick update: Evernight is now the recommended server, and when I suggested the split on Globallff, I nearly got eaten whole! :P

So now's our chance! Lets try to hold onto as many of the new players that join us as possible!

how about at a set time every day we get level 20 - 25/30 skirmishes and instances going?

    - johnsnoww

  9. #9
Every day may not be possible for me...
Tbh I made a toon on an US-server because during
weekdays their schedule better suits me.
Evernight was and will always remain my main though...

    About the channel-split,
maybe we could set up a channel for new players,
where players actually willing to assist may join new players.
This way the "Uberplayers" have no need to join and we get
less bashing in the channel, leaving a social bunch of actually
helpful people in there and ofc our new players...

    ./joinchannel GlobalNOOB XD
or better /joinchannel NewbieOOC or whatever...

Now just to find a way to make new players join that...

edit: About the suggestion above: may want to keep GA
as a guideline, so level 30./32..
First of all, it's the end of normal non-grind F2P so F2P-endgame.
Second: you can do Skirms, GA and GB, so you won't get stuck
at running just 1 thing all the time.
Third: I won't need to lock 3 chars at different levels XD

pardon the interruption but I just want to mention one thing that a guild I'm part of has done in Warhammer, Rift, and now GW2. It's an open world (campaign) the moves across the zones (low to high) completing meta events, discoveries, etc. It's on a schedule so you know when and where you'll be and it's planned out for a couple of months. Here's a video from Gamebreakertv that talks about a 22-week event that we did in Rift.

Johnsnoww, that is a great idea! I will join you as often as possible, and from next week maybe get some deeding and exploration groups together, as suggested by Beausoleil. We have so much rich lore to show off, thanks to Turbine largely sticking to the books for zone design. Maybe Saturday night tours of well known areas could be quite interesting... a stroll from Bag End to Rivendell for example, stopping at Weathertop, Bilbo's trolls and other similar landmarks.

EvAmy, I really like that idea. We need to decide on a name though.... GlobalAdvice maybe?

Another possibility could be weekly events that introduce our server's population to roleplaying. From what I've seen, roleplayers tend to have the sort of tight knit community I am imagining for Evernight. Whether the actual roleplaying is the cause, I don't know, but I'm sure giving it a shot wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for all the support and ideas, and keep them coming!

Edit 8 May: Beausoleil may have an excellent idea there. A guided tour of the zones, with level 85 escorts. We hit one zone a week, climbing in level. That way, new players can see what they have to look forward to. I know on my first leveling run I have been exploring everywhere possible. Myself and a friend once made it all the way to Annuminas in one piece at level 23 At the same time, we can complete exploration deeds and show off landmarks of Middle-Earth. It would be relatively quick and simple to organize, and introduce our players to group events like this... I'll try do some recruiting on Global on Friday night, see if we can get a committed group together. Please feel free to post your opinion of this idea!

Global should be available to all players from the start of their journey without going through the rigor of /joinchannel

A global recruitment channel also. Let's make it opt out instead of opt in.

It's easy just to take the tick out of the box if you are already in a kin so you don't suffer recruitment spam. Make glff an official channel.

Make riding skill a perk of joining a kin at low level.

Some of the responsibility must fall on us, for example keeping 1 or 2 low level alts so they new members can be taken through Gb ect. a lot of new players thrive on group play, they just don't know it yet

Those are great ideas, but unfortunately I doubt they'll happen. Maybe we should make a GlobalRecruit channel...

That sort of group play is what I'm trying to encourage. Unfortunately, from what I've seen so far, Evernight players are like Ents, slow to rouse except for the hasty few...
But thank goodness for the hasty people, and let's try rouse those other less-hasty folks! They can't resist forever!

I've made another account, for a personal Kinship house,
I'll try to get those 7 alts to level 30ish for F2P-fellowships.
My second Guardian is at 24 atm, I'll lock him at 32/34...
Lot's of TP-grinding for stones of the turtoise though XD

Let me know if there's a definite channel to join, so I can set
it on all my 19 chars (finally a way to satisfy my altoholism)

All too true, learned that for myself 2 years ago...
It's the annoying behaviour of those "uberraiders" that put
most people off though, screaming: YOU S***! when the person
joining his very first FS/Raid makes a rookie mistake...

Exactly, after all everyone was a new player once...

I am about to login, and I'll create a channel called GlobalRookie, and advertise it on GlobalLFF. I'll say it is for new players, those happy to advise new players, and kins that want to recruit. Maybe it'll kick things off...

I reckon we advertise it in the starter areas, then use it to advertise GlobalLFF, and we can advertise it on GlobalLFF. Maybe we can make the 2 interlinked but separate, if that makes sense.

The channel is up, with 10-15 members. But every one of them is keen and optimistic, so it's filtering out the global nay-sayers....

Please join us whenever possible, we'll probably use this channel to co-ordinate events for new players

    Exclamation

    Right, a big update/bump.

The channel GlobalRookie is up and running, consistently over 10% of GlobalLFF's population. There have already been some really interesting conversations.

But the biggest news is this: While I think the previous time of "recommended" status was a bug in my launcher, we are now definitely recommended server. There have been over 100 level 1-10s online most of the time this weekend, and my kin has already had a big population boost. So come on Evernight, let's show the new guys what we can do!

FYI: Ive set up a kin (Saviours of Eriador) with a friend which aims for Vanilla LOTRO content. Problem is, we dont have any additional members yet. But I do think its a quite unique set up for a kin, with some nice potential.

This should promote the Evernight server
This should promote low level content, often skipped (which is a big miss imo)
This should improve the skill level of new players, as low level content (and thus practice) is often skipped.

So spread the word and have some fun in Eriador!

Contact Gjoene, Baristann or Kuvion for more information!

Last night we had a LOT of new people on the server as it looks like we are 'recommended' again.
It was great to see SO many people running around the starter area again and the social panel for Bree area was full!

Hopefully the new populace can breathe life into our server again

Good luck with your recruiting and if you need anything let me (Danys) know.
