    Naming question: Special characters ("é")

    Hello all,

I just got started and wanted to give my character an appropriate name, which includes an "é". I see this character used in the examples, but I can't for the life of me get it to show. I tried both alt-130 (ascii) as 'e (which normally does the trick on websites such as these). How can I get this letter to show?

character names can only contain straight forward alpha numeric characters, you can not use any special characters otherwise it would make it difficult to send tells or mail to other players for those of us with plain old alpha numeric keyboards. even if you cut and paste letters from windows for example, the characters are replaced with a space

Oh, that's a shame, considering how many those characters are used in the lore. Thanks for the swift answer though!

In an attempt to be helpful, I'm going to go language nerd on you. <nerd>The special characters are used as a length marker in latin transliteration of Elvish words and names. In the Tengwar and Angerthas runes, what the languages were written in naturally, there was no such distinction; the native speakers knew the length naturally.</nerd> To summarize, it's ok to use a normal character for a long one. That was long and annoying, but I hope it helps

The reason why you can't use special characters in your name is that it makes it hard or sometimes even impossible for other people to type your name, which is required for mailing, inviting to fellowship/kinship etc. You'd have a lot of trouble if you had such a name.

There was another thead about this going on a few weeks ago, you can find it here
