I've been playing over a year, and always thought Turbine was really great about meeting deadlines, and limiting downtime. Thanks to the team for pushing the fix thru, and working so late during the holidays!

Yes, that is offensive. If I posted the same but swapped the pic for a fictional &&& member and the word Europeans with Americans I would expect to get banned frankly.

EDIT. Heh Nazi is fine but a largely defunct racist organisation is censored. -_-
Herr Klink is actually a Junker and a Prussian officer. He's also a fairly sympathetic guy, the humor is in the actual juxtopision of our expectation of the good Colonel and his actual personality...which is largely harmless and incompetent.

That aside, you need a sense of humor about these things. Were you to put up a photo of the Clampets (of Beverly Hillbillies fame) or Dave Chappelle in &&& robes...I dare to think most Americans would laugh at it as a bit of good-natured comedy.

I am a UK VIP player, I also I've also worked in software for more years than I care to mention (another FORTRAN 4/66 dev - few of us on the forums).

I'm finding this thread far too painful for words, am staggered at the attitude of a good number of the posters and am embarrassed that many of you think you speak for all Europeans (yes I am in the UK and would class us as European from a time zone perspective) but not otherwise based on most of these comments.

A few points I'd like to make as someone who has been in the position of having to release hotfixes in real time systems (e.g. stock and commodity exchange software), apologies for the length.

Software like LOTRO is complex, not complex like a modern plane but really complex

Things go wrong regularly - usually just after its been released (Finangles Corollary of Murphy's Law)

Are hotfixes a good thing - no, developers and Software companies hate them they are complex and prone to nasty consequences down the line, sometimes many releases later

Do you mix hotfixes and other scheduled activity (maintenance, logon server reboots etc.) - no, not unless you have a deathwish or just been employed by a competitor, if there is a failure it will take much longer to isolate if you mix activities

Is a hotfix more likely to have release issues than a standard release - too d@mn right they do - have I said developers hate doing hotfixes

Are on-line/real-time hotfixes ever communicated to users significantly before deployment - not in my experience (the need for a hotfix causes a bypassing of most of the communication channels and many of the standard checks prior to release)

Why not, if the code is read it can just be pushed out, you'll know about it's release time long in advance won't you - actually no.

Software release processes are usually somewhat long - specific hotfixes can be rushed, but the whole (shortened) process of code, test, package, release to QA, test, confirm fix and hotfix stability (if not make further changes and rinse and repeat till done - the developers grind), package for live server deployement, and then deploy usually very soon after the live packaging is complete.

Is there any way around this? yes, don't put out hotfixes, instead incorporate these changes into a formal patch which can be managed over a much longer time frame, and your users will just have to live with the issues.

Due to RL etc. and the fact we are fast approaching Christmas, have I lost one 'days' worth of playtime - no, more like over a week, I have a suspicion I won't be on till 28th or so (unless the weather tonight where I am causes the potential flooding) in which case, I'll get to play tomorrow.

Am I frothing at the mouth - not at the hotfix, the short notice or the delay - I feel for the guys trying to get this sorted, with their colleagues/managers breathing down their necks, to say nothing of how some of the posts here will make them feel.

Any annoyance I felt has gone away shamefaced into a corner after I read this thread, the dev's etc. actually want us to use their software and for it to work as expected - its what I do, and what I'm sure everyone else here wants for their own work.

There are some things that can be done a little better on this - we've institued a policy at work of announcing to all users as soon as any issue which may need a hotfix has been identified. We confirm we have one (but not content as that starts up another line for us to be beaten with lead pipes etc. over), a rough time frame when we expect to have a fix ready for, andthe amount of notice that can be expected for it - usually 1-3 hours.

Its not much, but it does help, as that way our users know something is coming and it will disrupt them some point in the next few days.

TLDR; whats going on is in the nature of hotfixes - we all have to live with it, developers, support and users. There are a couple of things that can be done, but not much, at my work we tell people when we've got a hotfix issue (but not what it is) we give an indication of when the release will be (say in next 6 days) and how much notice they can expect (usually 1-3 hours).

Its not personal, have a beer, wrap a present and try to free some time up for tomorrow or later in the week -
    Excellent post. +rep

don't remember who, or if it was for this game but a dev said something like this on the topic of bugs/exploits:
You can program the game and play through it, but you wont find all the bugs (you know how it is supposed to be done, after all, and do it that way). 100 people on the q/a main test server will find some. 1000+ on the public test server will find more. But no amount of testing can account for the thousands of players on live doing things their way, trying things we never thought of and had not tested for.

possibly same dev: Things can work fine in development, q/a main test, and public test yet still suddenly break on live.

What I will say is that even if the downtime itself is disappointing the communication from Turbine is welcome. Its good to have frequent updates while waiting.

In any event, if you want to get technical, Colonel Klink was a member of the Wermacht, as I recall, and I believe the Wermacht were not officially Nazis. I may be mistaken as I am not any kind of WWII buff.
I'm sorry but whatever the vague technicalities behind the picture, at the end of the day it's a Nazi with a caption that clearly insinuates Europeans are Nazis. I'm also unsure what other message it can convey? It certainly isn't funny.
I find the stupidity and ignorance of such posts offensive. There are plenty of others in this thread worthy of bans imo.

    No its not.

Thats the problem with some of you, you cant find the humor for whatever reason and its automatically offensive.

I enjoy crude humour as much as the next man. But there are certain things I don't think should be made fun of, especially in such a vitriolic thread! Taken on it's own it's a poor attempt at being funny, in the context of a thread full of 'across the pond' mud-flinging it's blatantly over-stepping the mark. Perhaps it was still just a misguided attempt.

    Ah well, servers back!

Thanks for lots of bluename updates btw, can finish my Hytbold dailies now before bed
