    Tolkien in Milwaukee

There was a neat article in the New York Times the other day about Tolkien's papers. Apparently they all reside at Marquette University.

The article included this priceless gem:

The road goes ever on and on

and on and on, and on and on,

Hobbits and wizards and orcs and elves

fill the books that strain the shelves.

One could be buried by tales as these

    if not by the appendices.

    The road, this over-beaten track,

begins not far from Fond du Lac,

in the land of Milkfat where the cheeses lie.

In the land of Milkfat where the cheeses lie.

Apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere.

Some of Tolkien's writings in the Marquette papers have been published in journals (approved by his son Christopher, or should I say 'pushed into publication' by his son, but that's a whole different story). Have to say I would love to be able to read them (or the ones in Oxford in my own country) but the chance of being allowed is highly slim!

Cool! What connection did the Professor have to Wisconsin U.S.A.?

No connection academically speaking, nor did he ever visit - the library purchased the manuscripts from Tolkien for their collection. It's explained here...

Professor Tolkien is reputed to have been very fond of cheese.
