    Thumbs down An update error occured: after patching

    The verified dmg file installed ok and started patching as expected, and restarted, re patched etc.etc.

    Then after initial login and server selection the game attempted to launch, then the screen went black (the same as when you loose connection and you get the option to quit). An error popped up informing that the patch server could not be reached.

    Now when you start the client it downloads all the splash screens for all 3 regions, then does a patch check and reports that "An update error occured:" above the still sliding progress bar.

    It then shows the 60 sec. countdown and retries continuously.

    I have re-downloaded and re-tried installing everything 3 times times now, including deleting the files in ~/Library...

    So now I am at a loss as what to do.

    Machine is a Macbook Pro:
    Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 M
    Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)

    Any ideas?
    Regards..

    When you are in the Launcher click the flag symbol (or just an arrow) in the top menu and select another Language. It will relaunch and 'should' then allow you to complete the Terms & Conditions confirmation screens and progress. You can set the language back to what you prefer after no problem.

    If you get stuck after this on multiple tries to the login server try switching your Mac Firewall off;

    System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall: Off

    OK I tried several times by switching languages, each time the launcher restarts, then downloads the 30 loading screen files, then attempts to patch and then jumps straight to retry 60 secs..

    I have the firewall turned off & this is an admin account, also there is plenty of space on the ssd.
    I have this client installed on my mac pro desktop and it works fine, so the network is good.
    I dunno what else to try..

    Can you try a Traceroute to the LOTRO login servers to see if there is any issue there;

    Open Applications > Network Utilities > Traceroute tab

    copy/paste:

    gls.lotro.com
    Hit Trace. Let it run then copy paste report here.

    To compare mine from Europe (France) to login server;
    Code:

    Check you have also set any ports required to be open in router etc. There is some information on the LOTRO forums though it is PC centric and somewhat old, the principals still are there.

    Rerun the Traceroute from the home connection to confirm it is connecting from that.

    Double check that you have all necessary ports open on your modem router for LOTRO. This depends on the model etc. and hard to help on. The ports are noted on the link to the Turbine network thread posted earlier.

    EDIT: See you already trashed the prefs files already.

    You will probably need to reselect the language to get past the T&C stage again when you do this.

    Post a ticket and see if Turbine are able to help further.

    Did you try trashing the prefs files?

    Can you copy/paste the contents of the LotroLauncher.log and post. It can be found here;

    ~/Library/Logs/LotroLauncher.log

    it should look like this when logging via the LotroLauncher:

    Curiously I don't find any of these files :
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.turbine.loroclient.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.turbine.lorolauncher.plist
    ~/Library/Logs/LotroLauncher.log

    Is there an explanation ?

    Ensure you are looking in the right directory. See Valamar's directions to ensure you look in the right Library;

    The Tilde character, "~" is shorthand for "<your home directory>". (This is classic UNIX(tm), OSX Terminology.)
    Under OSX Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8) the Library directory (folder) is no longer normally visible in the finder. You can change this Finder behavior with a terminal command or simply use the Finder "pull-down" menu "GO" and select "Go To Folder" (Keyboard shortcut = Cmd-Shift-G). This will open a window which defaults to "~/Library" and open a finder window to that location. You can then simply continue to navigate from there as you normally would.
    There are two "library" directories: "/Library" and "~/Library".
    "/Library" is the root or System Library. You will "GO" here if you forget the Tilde!
    "~/Library" is your userid's personal library and where all of the LOTRO Mac Client information is stored.
    source: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Mac_Client

    Usually to access the hidden user Library, in Finder I click on Go then press the Alt key which will reveal the Library and navigate to the folders from there.

    The patcher log interesting bit is:

    Would be useful to have the full version. Post using code tags to keep it coherent.

    Also the LotroLauncher.log would be interesting (see above).

    From that small section it looks like a data corruption issue.

    No problem. Never understood really why Apple chose to hide the user Library ^^.

    I can see it is a different error report than the previous players one.

    Can you go to this folder and copy/paste the file names that are installed there and post them here please;

    /Applications/LotroLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS
    Use the same Go > Go To Folder... (Shift-CMD-G) or right click the 'The Lord of the Rings Online™' application, select Show Package Contents and navigate to the folder.

    Interested to see if you have these installed;

    PatchClient.dylib
    TTEPatchClient.dylib

    Traceroute looks fine.

    Error is not very specific. It indicates the issue is probably either not being able to check files woth the patch server for some reason, or that there is some corruption/permissions issue with installed files.

    This error occurs from reading with Mac or Unix Wine installs. Did you tun LOTRO via Crossover or Wine previously? Or have the closed beta RoR Mac client installed?

    You mentioned trashing files in ~/Library earlier. Can you make sure you trashed all the files listed here;

    ~/Library/Application Support/com.turbine.lotroclient (the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Caches/com.turbine.lotroclient
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.turbine.LotroLauncher.plis t
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.turbine.lotroclient.plist
    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.turbine.lotroclient.savedS tate[/QUOTE]
    Note: for some reason the forum is inserting a space between the s-t on two file names. Ignore that.

    Definitely Submit a Ticket to Turbine and include all the info identifying it as a Mac issue. Hopefully they are able to provide some further advice.

    Bah, silly errors. Best to ticket at this stage.

    Just something to do while waiting is trying to discount any connection issues. Check the stuff here;

    http://support.turbine.com/ics/suppo...questionID=570

    GL with the ticket.

    I can see it is a different error report than the previous players one.

    Can you go to this folder and copy/paste the file names that are installed there and post them here please;

    Use the same Go > Go To Folder... (Shift-CMD-G) or right click the 'The Lord of the Rings Online™' application, select Show Package Contents and navigate to the folder.

    Interested to see if you have these installed;

    PatchClient.dylib
    TTEPatchClient.dylib

    OK thanks. As expected. The reason I asked is because in the error report it says it could not locate these;

    /Applications/LotroLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS/libpatchclient.dylib
    The name of the .dylib is different but its the same file/s.

    Only thing I can suggest is for me to email these files as they are not large and for you to try moving the existing to desktop and replace with mine to see if it helps. It's a small chance but I am happy to send them to try. Just PM me a contact.

    It is a different error but could still be the same issue as the OP.

    Do Submit a Ticket so that Turbine are aware of the issue and can provide their help to resolve this.

    Bonne chance!

    edit: I can replicate the exact same error message by removing those two files from the folder;

    2012.11.13 10:13:09[W] PatchClientDLL::LoadDLL - failed to load library! err: "Cannot load library /Applications/LotroLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS/patchclient: (dlopen(/Applications/LotroLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS/libpatchclient.dylib, 5): image not found)"

    Having developed this issue myself last Friday after no issue since release, I have spent the weekend trying to troubleshoot the problem and now believe I have finally identified at least a fix, if not a definitive cause (probably only Turbine can do this).

    Issue: During the launch process of the Mac client LotroLauncher.app (in the Finder named The Lord of the Rings Online™), after connecting to the patch server and Check product stage; instead of progressing to the Login/Password stage the launcher shows the error message;

    An update error occured
    [sic]

    And just repeats a Retry every 60 seconds will no progress. Relaunching will only repeat the loop.

    Workaround: Rename the application from The Lord of the Rings Online™ to The Lord of the Rings Online by removing the '™'. Relaunch the application and it should now progress to Login/Password and allow you to enter the game.

    Image: This is the error message on the launcher window;

    Note: I have only been able to reproduce this workaround on my own Mac so until others confirm it works we wont know if this is a universal solution. There are other options to resolve this issue which are;

    Optional Workarounds

    Launch the LotroLauncher.app directly

    1. Navigate to /Applications > The Lord of the Rings Online™ then right click the app and select Show Package Contents.

    2. Navigate to Contents >MacOS >LotroLauncher (LotroLauncher.app if extensions are shown) and double click to launch directly. This will automatically open Terminal and run the launch sequence. This should result in you reaching the Login/Password stage ready to enter the game.

    You do not have to alter the app name to do this (although that is the neater solution). It is also possible to drag this to the Dock (right or lower part) to make a shortcut.

    Reinstall the Application

    Initially I resolved this after a lot of checks by removing the following (I moved them to a new folder on the desktop);

    /Applications/The Lord of the Rings Online™.app
    (normally this is /Applications/LotroLauncher.app but shows as this with a problem install)

    and all the supporting/related files;

    ~/Library/Application Support/com.turbine.lotroclient
    ~/Library/Caches/com.turbine.lotroclient
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.turbine.lotroclient.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.turbine.LotroLauncher.plis t
    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.turbine.lotroclient.savedS tate
    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.turbine.LotroLauncher.save dState
    Then mounting the LotroLauncher.dmg disk image again; Letting the Verify complete (takes a while but important) and copy to Applications by dragging it to the folder on the disk image window (takes a while as a large file).

    Launch the fresh install and let it patch. This time it worked without the error. Just make sure that all the files noted are removed.

    Details: These are included on the new thread for this issue/solution found here.

    Hopefully this helps resolve this frustrating bug for others also. Please post if it works (or not) for you.
