Thumbs up Thanks Turbine for the Mac Client

Yes, it's not a technical post but I thought it appropriate to post a BIG thanks to Turbine for the efforts in bringing us an official Mac client.

Looking forward to working on improving the beta client and many happy hours of LOTRO on the Mac

    To join the fun the download is here;

    Edit: Now linked from the official Turbine Download page here;

Turbine Support - How do I download and install LOTRO onto my computer?

    Sapience

This is the MAC Client ONLY. It is a big, and I do mean big, download. It is a direct download, no Pando, no happy cloud, etc. It's going to take a significant amount of time to DL it all. If I recall correctly it's 16GB give or take.

We're still sorting some issues with the MAC client so please report bugs you see using the bug reports. You'll also find we've opened a new forum for MAC Technical Support.

edit: Currently I'm only getting around 50kB/sec download speed so it will takes days as it is. Maybe that is just a local thing (normally I download max at about 256kB/sec) or just the load on the available bandwidth on the host server.

Talking And there was much joy and celebration!

Having played LotRO for 5 years using a mix of BootCamp and CrossOver, I'm thrilled to finally being able to enjoy Middle-earth through a native Mac-client!

A billion thanks and more seem to be in order :-D

Does anyone know if this download will be a client that will update when the Mac Version is released?
Or will it require to redownload the 16GB again on launch day?

From what has been said this is the official launch. It is a Mac open beta client which works on live servers. At some point it will go out of beta but there is no timescale on that. Really this is what we have for now.

Whether or not we will need to re-download the full client then is hard to say but it wont be any time soon I imagine.

If it works as well or better than the closed beta we tested on RoR beta Bullroarer then it works pretty much as the PC version with a few limitations in Graphics settings. Most Mac users on the beta felt it was good enough for release.

There were some issues as may be expected and hard to say which of those were Mac specific which should now become clearer with this Mac beta client launch.

So, if you want to play LOTRO on a Mac then this is the best bet for the time being. Yes, it is a large download especially over smaller connections (I'm on a 2MB DSL) but the size is similar to say a full WoW or GW2 install.

Downloading now! I just wanted to echo my HUGE thanks to Turbine! As a game developer myself I can somewhat imagine what a massive undertaking moving LOTRO natively to a new platform must have been. Your hard work is appreciated!

    Thumbs up Thanks!

I am finding stuff, but I have been playing with the mac client for a couple hours now and I must say that I am very impressed with the release, ESPECIALLY for a first public one.

I'll save criticisms for other thread, and just give a big, huge THANK YOU for doing this finally.

You guys are the best, and have been since Asheron's Call.

Yay! Downloaded the client, it has been verified and now copying to the Applications folder.

I sure wish it works and that there are no problems. I have been waiting for the MAC client since days one of RoR, was forced to play on a real old PC that I don't know how it didn't explode as I leveled my main and went agiants all the war–bands lol.

Crossing my fingers all works on my MAC. Thank you Turbine for pushing this out.

Edit: The games cannot launch. Gonna go cry now, and maybe smash the computer.

    Mac client

Just to add my tuppenceworth, it was great using a mac client for the first time in beta and I am really glad we can now enjoy all the benefits that it brought in live gameplay.

Especial thanks to Sapience and Rick Heaton, they keep taking the hits and always bounce back

    Thx guys

FINALLY! I've been waiting for ages! cant wait to start playing again. Thanks a bunch turbine. Quit playing in bootcamp several months back because of a single crash which was video card related (Got me paranoid, but probably bad drivers), and I've had the crave for all this time. This game is amazing! Here's to another start!

45 minutes till download finishes, cant wait !!!

I would also like to say thanks for releasing this! I have been wanting to play LotRO for a while now, but don't have a PC and didn't want to use Bootcamp.

The client runs quite well! I haven't come across any bugs yet which is nice. Now back to playing LotRO!

Got to say this is a blessing! I left Lotro in January after having been with it from the earliest beta days. This was because I switched to a 27" MAC. I just did not want to fool with a the "work arounds" to get it to work. I gave up hope. Tonight I played for 2 hours (after a 3 hour download) and must say it was a perfect experience. Not an issue at all!

    SO GLAD to be BACK!

Great job on this, downloaded the 17.7Gb file in about 2 hours on my 20mb work line, so not too bad.

Personally I'm happy to sacrifice a few graphical niceties to not have to Bootcamp.

Looking forward to testing this Beta more than any other recently

    cool

I haven't played this in years... will have to try again. I mainly stopped simply because it was Windows only...

Thanks from me, too. I am delighted.

I just bought the Moria expansion with real money as a way of saying thank you that even the CFO will understand.

I'll probably go VIP again as well once the XP disabler becomes available.

I have been playing on the new client for a few hours now and I have to say I am delighted with it. Best of all, the process to get into the game is now a matter of a couple of minutes, not 15 minutes or more (in Windows I have the connection timeout on the first load of a character after booting Windows problem).

I'm starting to get used to the (slightly) reduced graphics, darker more saturated screen, occasional drastic changes in camera angle, and slower FPS and so far I can live without windowed mode and player music. The fact that EVERYTHING ELSE works so well and the convenience of being able to drop into the game anytime I want without disrupting what I was doing on my Mac, more than makes up for those things! Actually, this seems way better than most beta products I've run into over the years.

Thank you so much devs for building this client for us. I really appreciate your efforts!

It occurs to me, having posted on the 'Issues' thread, I have yet to chime in here...

Thank you, Turbine. Are there a few issues? certainly - but there are issues in any program, on any platform. The fact that it runs, I can play the game, and don't have to worry that the next patch will break wine again (because it's not supported) - well, it's pretty darn nice (stronger language omitted, for tenderer ears).

I may even be able to convince/coerce a few coworkers into Middle Earth, because of it!
