I am curious as to what makes you perceive any race as more fun than a hobbit? Have you not performed the giggle emote on your hobbit? Big folk simply cannot compete with hobbits in the realm of frivolity and mirth.

Seriously, differences between races in Lotro are almost entirely cosmetic. There are some extremely minor racial bonuses and penalties to stats and resistances, but these become virtually insignificant by level 20 if not well before. There are a few fairly significant racial skills (man heal, hobbit possum, etc) on looooong cool-downs, but those have no impact on normal game play, as they are generally considered to be emergency skills.

Play whichever race makes you happy.

The differences you're seeing are not because of race, they're because of level and content disparity. As DarkToad said, the difference between races - especially before you even have the various racial traits and skills unlocked - is too small to ever notice.

Unless you plan on being a hardcore pvp'er, just roll what race you like playing most.

    I play a hobbit burg
    Don't play a hobbit burg

From a Min/Maxing perspective (read: munchkin), everyone except RKs should be playing human. Humans get +5% incoming healing, which is better than *every other racial bonus combined* (including the rest of the ones humans get).

What reillan said up there ^

Race of Man gets the racial heal that they have refused to scale. Its really good early on, and eventually just acts like a free health potion on a long timer. They get the 1% b/p/e buff, which is nothing to sneeze at.

Hobbits get a hobbit flop (feign death), which is a bit like an emergency hide-in-plain-sight. Given the choice for leveling, I'd actually rather have the extra aggro-drop than the man heal.

If you end up taking the time to level and fully max out your burg, the man will have some slightly larger numbers at the top end, that don't actually make a whole lot of difference.

tl;dr: hobbit flop > man heal in lots of cases; race of men bonuses slightly > hobbit bonuses otherwise

oh, and man burgs are non-fat, sugar-substitute vanilla, whereas hobbit burgs are delicious cookies-and-cream on top of moist cake. you decide.

I guess we devolved into silliness and never really answered the second half of your question.

The burglar is a lightly armored melee class with no shield and relatively low morale pool, arguably making it the "squishiest" of the melee classes. Burglars have three primary methods to reduce incoming damage:

    1. Crowd control. What is mezzed or stunned cannot hurt you. Get in the habit of riddling secondary targets. Also, don't forget to employ "champion crowd control" -- what is dead cannot hurt you. Open your attacks from stealth and from behind your target to maximize the damage of your first attack. When fully traited for positional and stealth benefits, burglars can rival hunters for quick kills of primary targets.

    2. Debuffs. Burglars have a number of skills (tricks, addle, etc.) that slow enemy attacks, increase enemy miss chance, and make enemies more prone to incoming attacks and damage. Get in the habit of debuffing your opponents. Also, many burglars neglect to utilize stun dust and caltrops and the like; these consumable items can have a real impact when used to augment the rest of your skills.

    3. Damage reduction. Once in combat, the burglar must rely on reducing as much as possible incoming damage. Part of this comes naturally to a burglar -- lots of agility provides for high evade and parry ratings. High ratings in evade and parry result in avoiding a percentage of incoming attacks altogether. This is nice. To reduce the amount of damage that is received from attacks that hit, work for a high rating in physical mitigation. At below maximum character level, physical mitigation in the range of 25 to 30% is easily achievable by concentrating on those virtues that provide it -- good virtues to consider are Innocence, Compassion, Zeal, Charity, Discipline and Patience. Of those, Innocence and Zeal are two that almost every class keeps permanently slotted, so they are worth grinding.

I hope some of that helps! Burglars can be very fun to play, but also very frustrating to develop through the middle levels. Once you gain access to legendary items, you'll be able to dramatically improve some of your skills through legacies and relics.

There is no Vs. about it one race does not outweigh another (insert dwarf joke here) it is purely cosmetic in the grand scheme of things, the only choice that can differentiate between the 2 races is do you want a big heal or another hiding skill both of which are extremely handy

But if you did want to get down to the technical side and in detailed

Hobbits have better might, crit and fate as base stats

Men have better vitality and resistances as base stats

By the times u reach the higher levels these stats are irrelevant.

@ end game the man has the edge but the hobbit fits the lore.

Men get a nice racial heal and the 1% auto crit chance on the dagger wile it was nice @ 50/60/65 it wortless now.

and when you are in the moors you are more likely to get targeted as a hobbit because people think the small foke are easy kills. A man burg might look like a captain or champ at first glance.

In short the racials for the hobbit race do not mesh well with the burg class.

    Go MAN

Creeps in the Moors are looking for hobbit burgs most of the time. You have an advantage in terms of surprise as man, psychologically speaking.

none of this really covers why the hobbit would die more though. There has to be some difference apart from the 1 time an hour buttons. 1% defenses is decent but it should not be life & death of a player. I am drawing a total blank on what could cause this. Someone said content, but that is easy to check: go do the same set of quests on both at the same level and if either one dies, what exactly killed you?!

Of course if one seems more fun than another, play the more fun one. But the dying bit... makes no sense to me.

It used to matter more. It used to matter that there are +might racial bonuses, for example, but burgs no longer use might for their attack power. It used to matter which weapon type, before all weapons were made equal. Man heal used to matter, but it has grown weak. It used to matter that hobbits had a ranged attack for pulling at lower levels, but those go by so fast now. And on down the line, most of these bonuses are useless and outdated, making a tiny difference in the low and mid levels, and little at endgame. The exploit with play dead is more powerful than anything a man has, if you choose to use that. Otherwise, its virtually the same.

If you care, see if you can figure out what is different between your 2 burgs, gear? Traits? level? Area you are in? Some button you hit on the man that is not there on the hobbit?? There has to be a reason for dying. Also dying should be rare with any class of any race, the game is not hard and most deaths are from pulling too many mobs, whether by carelessness or respawns, and at higher level, that can mean 5+ for a burg, given all our situational powers.
