    Running RoR on Linux/Wine

For anyone having trouble running LoTRO on Linux through Wine after the Riders of Rohan update, there is a Wine patch that may help. Not sure who wrote the patch, but if you're willing to patch and compile Wine for yourself, you may get to enjoy the new update. It worked for me.

I have yet to try it (wine still building), but I had another issue - my game refused to patch using pylotro.

It seems that the solution mentioned in this post works:

There is a standalone Wine package now. I've dowload it and it works!

    To download (direct link):https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_d...TFUV0w5RnduY0U
    Info on that: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=versi on&iId=26663&iTestingId=74482

    How To:

    1) Download it https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_dkcsYE5yPfVTFUV0w5R nduY0U
    2) Create a folder somewhere in your Home Dir
    3) tar -xvf the downloaded file
    4) Go to PyLotro > Tools > Options and check Advanced Options. Modify Wine's location to: [The Folder where you extracted the package]/usr/bin/wine
    5) Enjoy the game

If PyLotro refuses to patch because patchclient cannot be overwriten just browse your temp folder and copy the new patchclient.dll to the LOTRO folder and it will resume.

I just want to thanks to the kind soul that made the patch and posted it on the bullroarer forums. Sadly I forgot your name so couldn't say who you were on the appdb page, sorry about that =(

Will this same method work with Mac? So far mac has been utterly ignored because of the impending Mac Client which may take weeks or months to show up.

I have very little programming knowledge but I'm willing to be the test dummy to get this working for mac users.

There is a similar fix available for Mac user. Read this thread:
    http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.p...tro-mac-client
near the end. There is an explanation how to build the Mac solution.

Thanks for posting this, been unable to log in since before the update. I still can't get in though- when I log in I immediately get a "GLIBC_2.14 not found" error. Any suggestions? or is anyone else having the same problem?

i downloaded the package and read the winehq discussion. everyody mentions changing the wine destination.
    Bjorn at http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...estingId=74482 says:
Do what i said go to Tools --> Options --> tick "Advanced Options" --> Wine Programm and enter the new wine binary patch here.
the thing is i dont see 'wine program' option. i run pylotro - go to tools > options > checked advanced options. the box below that included 'patchclient.dll' lights up for me and i can type something there... but this is patchclient location not the wine location, right? sorry if it is a noob question, but compeltely confused.

What version of PyLotro are you running? (I'm using 0.15.1)

If you are using Ubuntu 12.04 you can get a .deb from here: https://launchpad.net/~ajackson-bcs/...recise_all.deb

Let me know if that helps.

I am running lotro on Ubuntu 12.04, with pylotro 0.15 and trying the patched version downloaded provided. My version of Pylotro has two options under advanced options Wine Program and Patch Client DLL. When I try to put the new location in the Wine Program area, when I try logging in, the Lauch Game - Wine Output is blank and nothing happens. Have I installed the new wine wrong? Have I linked it wrong? Let me know if you can help.

This message indicates that wine was most likely compiled with a different version of libc.
You can try and compare output of these:

    ldd /path/to/your/wine
    ldd /bin/sh

Try to build wine yourself, its really not difficult (just time consuming).

    Good luck

Double check you have the right path in pylotro AND that you don't have a trailing space after wine !
I had exactly the same issue

I tried checking the path, creating another wine to try it with, no luck. Still the same problem. Blank output when I try to run it with any other wine than the old one, with crashes with the standard error. Any thoughts? Am I installing wine wrong (tar -xf it in the folder I am planning to use)?

From this and your previous post I can tell you that
1.- Pylotro doesn't patch wine, it patches the game
2.- When asking for help in wine you should say what version of wine do you have.
3.- tar -xf doesn't install wine, it just decompress it.
4.- From number 3, I can guess you haven't patched your wine, nor installed the new version.
5.- I don't use ubuntu so I can't tell you a way to patch your wine while remeaning in your installer package manager.
6.- To patch wine from source you need to follow this http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-7ed3...c5e553dc41817b

7.- For more help in wine related problems you are better asking in the appdb page. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...sion&iId=26663 and for ubuntu how to do stuff in ubuntu forums.

For the person with the "GLIBC_2.14 not found" problem you are better updating your glib libraries and the related ones you probably have something broken.

Why, Turbine, why? Each time there is new expansion, patch, pre-order there is always some kind of problem. Now I cannot enjoy Rohan because I´m Linux user. On the other side I was expecting some problems as usual.. :-)
Do you know when the new wine version (with RoR fix) will be released?

    Hussar,

I have spent some time investigating how to install the wine pre-patched wine binary listed, but have been unable to find a way to do that. I also tried patch and compiling from source, but my archetecture apperently has some problems with doing that, and although they can be overcome, I lack the ability to do so. I have also tried building wine in a chroot, but have once again run into problems in that regard. Specifically with installation of winetricks, compounded by my general ignorance of chroot in general.

As such I request your guidance in following the instruction in the third post in this thread giving intructions on how to install the pre-patched wine binary. In following those intructions, the command tar -zfv <filename> yeilds the error: "tar: You must specify one of the `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' options". The only way I know to exract files as requested in step three is -xf, which you state is incorrect. How should I go about completing that step?

Thank you for your time, patience and help,
    drfacts

edit: I am (trying) using the package listed above. It uses wine 1.15.5 with the patch

NOTE - don't do this as root, don't use sudo

    mkdir ~/lotro-wine
    cd ~/lotro-wine
tar xvf ~/wine-1.5.15-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz (assuming file is in your home dir)

If you do it this way, your wine binary will end up in

    /home/yourusername/lotro-wine/usr/bin/wine

I did not check if the package works, I have built wine myself.

thank you RamiroS! i purged everything including all instalation and conf files i could find and it worked this time. i added the path and it works like charm so far... even the python problem i had (had to log through the terminal) is gone. i haven't tested everything yet, so there may be issues down the road, but i managed to log in with no prolems and i am in game.

for anybody having problem with pylotro - use the link from RamiroS and use this command to purge pylotro:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge pylotro

than go to pylotro directory under wine --> drive_C --> program files and delete the folder pylotro

hope it helps! and thank you again... time to go and find my horse now

oh btw: i am on Linux Mint Maya LTS

So it is confirmed that we now need wine-1.5 and wine-1.4 doesn't do?

BTW, the old commandline Linux launcher still seem to patch fine. I patch in the commandline launcher and run in pylotro. Well until this patch, now I get no logon server reachable

What version of Pylotro are you using? Have you installed a patched version of wine? There should be no problem with the logon server that I know of.

No, simply going wine-1.4 to 1.5 doesn't solve the problem with finding the logon servers.

Anybody else not finding logon servers?

Sorry, as Jorei noted the tar command was not right (I've edited the post).

Did it work? or still blank output?
