    dreams upon stone

When Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves were sheltering in the small cave in the Mistys, Bilbo had a dream:

"that the floor of the cave was giving way, and he was slipping - beginning to fall down, down, goodness knows where to."

    Didn't I say, wrong person?

    Maybe you should think big.

How about a dragon induced dream? Thorin sitting at the threshold of the mountain entrance and day-dreaming of the Arkenstone?

""The Arkenstone! The Arkenstone!" murmured Thorin in the dark, half dreaming with his chin upon his knees. "It was like a globe with a thousand facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon!"
But the enchanted desire of the hoard had fallen from Bilbo. All through their talk he was only half listening to them. He sat nearest to the door with one ear cocked for any beginnings of a sound without, his other was alert or echoes beyond the murmurs of the dwarves, for any whisper of a movement from far below.
Darkness grew deeper and he grew ever more uneasy. "Shut the door!" he begged them. "I fear that dragon in my marrow. I like this silence far less than the uproar of last night. Shut the door before it is too late!"
Something in his voice gave the dwarves an uncomfortable feeling. Slowly Thorin shook off his dreams and getting up he kicked away the stone that wedged the door.

    ...when in doubt...twirl...

Still the wrong person. In that passage, he is not talking, but being talked about.

As I had said, think big.

    dreams upon stone...

Your hints have all been pointing at Smaug, but I have resisted considering Smaug because of the "stone" portion of the riddle.

So, I forced myself to consider Smaug (since you have been beating us over the head with him).
Maybe the "stone" referred to is not the hard rock substance, but an item, such as a precious stone, like the Arkenstone.

Smaug was sleeping, he was probably dreaming.
He was lying on a huge pile of treasure. A pile in which the Arkenstone was mingled.

    So, that my new guess.

    Smaug.

Sorry, but that was too big. The character is larger than most, but not as big as Smaug. But both have a thing in common: they are sentient.

Is it Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles? Sorry, I can’t find the quote specifically, but the eagles sleep on high rocks and woke at the commotion of the burning forest.
“...and he lived happily ever after, to the end of his days”

No, he doesn't have feathers. Just hair.

    Could it perhaps be Beorn?

Beorn is 'larger than most' and certainly hairy, and referencing Gandalf's description of him to Bilbo and the dwarves: "... I once saw him sitting all alone on the top of the Carrock at night watching the moon sinking towards the Misty Mountains, and I heard him growl in the tongue of bears; 'The day will come when they will perish and I shall go back!' ..." The 'dreams' of the clue are not sleeping dreams but Beorn's desire: 'a daydream - in the night', and 'upon stone' his being atop the Carrock?

    Everbrock, you found him out!
I meant exactly this moment in the night, that Gandalf had talked about.

    Your turn

Hurrah, thank you! Now then folks, I find setting riddles is much harder than solving them so I hope this won't be too taxing for your collective genius, as I'll be hard pressed to come up with additional clues! (Also I've only dipped in to this thread on occasion so apologies in advance if the subject of this riddle has already made an appearance.) Good luck...

One way to provide a hint is to let us know what "age" the riddle is related to. 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

    How about "Sharkey"?
The nickname given to bossman Saruman by the scumbags that tried to take over the Shire.

I have read that "Sharkey" was based on the orcish word "sharku" which translates as "old man".

Good answer, but it's not Sharkey I'm afraid ~ you're certainly in the right area though...
