    Great, thanks!

    So I thought I’d have a bit of a laugh:

    Initialise small person

    initialise = boot?
    small person = hobbit?

    Hobbit wearing boots? Bilbo wearing boots on his way to/from the Lonely Mountain back to Rivendell?

    "The bootings occurred at Rivendell; and he was again bootless after leaving Rivendell on the way home".

    This is such a good answer it pains me to say it’s wrong Even though I re read the Hobbit recently, I still missed that and never even realised it happened!

    I’ll drop a hint after the next guess.

    Keeping with the same theme;

    "The Hobbits of that quarter, the Eastfarthing, were rather large and heavy-legged, and they wore dwarf-boots in muddy weather. But they were well known to be Stoors in a large part of their blood, as indeed was shown by the down that many grew on their chins. No Harfoot or Fallohide had any trace of a beard." ~The Fellowship of Ring - Prologue

    I could be off with Hobbit Boots but it's just what I've taken from it xD

    It’s much less clever than that, unfortunately!

    It would perhaps make more sense as “small person initialised”. The answer is a single word.

    Not Bilbo, no; but the answer would feel very familiar to him...

    Hep was closest with his reasoning, exploring the wordplay on “initialise” (but it isn’t about boots )

    “Initialise small person”, makes more sense as “small person initialised”

    The answer is one word - a well-known place in Middle Earth, familiar to Bilbo ... the clues are stacking up!

    If nobody guesses it soon I’ll give it to Hep as his first answer was so good.

    OK, in the interest of keeping the game going:

    Small person = Hobbit
    Initialise = switch on

    The answer therefore is Hobbit-on ... Hobbiton!

    Hephburz-2 please take the stage as your answer was the best

    Fair enough. Just out of curiosity though, what was your original answer?

    Twiggy ear decor

    Hmm, this can't be too hard.
    Maybe it's just too lame and no one want to be associated with it.
    Grin.

    OK, I'll drop a hint...
    Hobbits and a ranger saw this.

    When I first read the clue, I immediately thought of Treebeard, and I've been bogged down ever since as I was convinced the answer must have had something to do with ents. Your clue though does make it seem fairly easy now.

    What about the three dead stone trolls and the bird's nest behind one of their ears?

    Not sure whether I should answer this, as my last riddle went down like a lead balloon

    But has it anything to do with the death count at Helm’s Deep? Twenty being a score, and Legolas making light of it:

    “Two!’ said Gimli, patting his axe. He had returned to his place on the wall.
    ‘Two?’ said Legolas. ‘I have done better, though now I must grope for spent arrows; all mine are gone. Yet I make my tale twenty at the least. But that is only a few leaves in a forest.”

    Good answer, but unfortunately not the one I was going for.

    My first instinct was Theoden's comment to Aragorn about the Grey Company. However, the quote is "If these kinsmen be in any way like to yourself, my lord Aragorn, thirty such knights will be a strength that cannot be counted by heads," but a "score" is twenty, not thirty, so that can't be right.

    A "score" could also be a mark or notch, so my current best guess is Gandalf's mark on Bilbo's door. In this sense, "only a score" brought the Dwarves to Bilbo's door, and thence to adventure. But my uncertainty about this could only be signalled by typing far more question marks than would be polite...

    Anyway, just figured I'd throw these out there to eliminate possibilities.
