    losing connection

whenever there is lightning in my area, I lose my connection quite frequently. Would changing the DNS on my DSL modem help with that? It seems that my modem is losing its connection to the internet. Thanks for any help you can give.

If the modem was provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) the answer will be no in a way. Your ISP has a default DNS that there "hand-out" modems use. You can change it but this mite not help. You still have to contact your ISP before packets are sent or received. Try this trouble shooting trick.

Using a modem/wireless-router? = Lighting can distort WIFI signals.
Some DSL modems have a auto fuse that will restart and/or shut down the modem when there is a surge.
Note: you can have a power surge even if you can not see or hear it.
Some DSL modems WILL restart if they lose any connection to the ISP.
If you have a phone using the same line does that go out as well?
I would try calling your ISP and letting them know and you can ask them if there is a Isolator / Surge Protector in the area or at there end that is protecting there clients. The reason is because this device is like a big well Surge Protector and closes all conetions in the area to help stop damaging the modems and phones.

If I have not help or answered your question please post back

I don't think so. DNS is like a phone book but you problem is more like not having diailtone, changing brand of phone book will not help.

There are two parts to the DSL connection the modem in your house and the DSLAM in the telco's central office. This connect can be affected by interfenece on the wires from the storm or moisture getting into junction boxes etc.

Plain old telephone system (POTS) was not designed for data and it's amazing it works as well as it does.

Do you have the DSL filters on all our other phones? These keep the components in your phone from effecting the line quality. So make sure anything that plugs into a phone line, like an answering machine or wireless phone base has a filter.

Yes the DNS is the Domain Naming System it allows you to have a name than using the IP Address. Makes it easier to go to a website. People remember words more better than Number.

But I do thing this is a Line quality issue between the telco office and his home. Not a lot can be done

LOL! yea, im guessing you know why they are swiching due to ISPs running out of IPs.

I would upgrade the video card, you can get a 460 nvidia card relatively cheap, even amd cards are good, Also, in a large raid it can get cpu intensive once all the flashy rk and LM skills start going....overall, I would say a pc upgrade, maybe look at what your mainboard can handle for a processor and also a new vid card. I think I read your current cpu is a AM3, there are some pretty fast AM3 processors cheap out there.
