    Question "too far away" ??

I get the message "Too far away" fairly often while playing. I never thought much about it, because my skills still go off even when I see this message, but I'm wondering now what this message is trying to tell me.

Timeless Echoes of Battle has the "out of range" indicator that prevents me from using it if I'm too far away, so I don't think the message is about that skill. None of the other skills have "out of range" indicators when I'm using them, so why is this message even coming up?

The more I think about it, the more confused I get - I must be missing something basic. What causes this message to come up?

Might be your auto-attacks that are out of range?

Some skills have a bonus effect if the mob is within range when the skill is used.
Maybe you are using a skill with a bonus effect and the mob is out of range thus the message.

Usually occurs when your auto attacks are not within melee range. I see this regularly on any character that pulls with a ranged attack but doesn't have a ranged auto attack, wheras I have never seen it on my Hunter.

    Re: "too far away" ??

It always happens for me when I'm attacking through someone else via Skill Target Forwarding. IE, I'm throwing heals on the MOB we are fighting, who is farther away than the tank (in range). Or vice-versa, I've got the tank targeted, who has faced a MOB away from me/us, and is "too far away", but the MOB is in range and is taking my attacks.

If you hit F to switch to the target's target, or click the target's target bars, or the assist button on the fellowship player's bar, or Shift-Function key of that fellowship member, you'll select the target directly and the message stops appearing.

Your opening attack puts you into a combat state, since Minstrels don't have a ranged weapon the auto-attack defaults to melee ... for which you're out of range.

    It's nothing to worry about.

Thanks, everyone! I was hesitant to ask about it but I'm glad I did.

Always ask! :-) It falls under the 90-9-1 rule, so you know any question you have, a bunch of others are wondering also, but just haven't asked the question. (About 90% lurk in forums, 9% respond, 1% initiate topics.) So of the couple hundred who have currently viewed this thread, there's a good chance you helped several of them.

I believe that you can also get this message on an induction attack that you start while they are in range but while inducting they move out of range.
