Thread: SWTOR vs Lotro

    SWTOR vs Lotro

SWTOR scored a devastating critical hit on LOTRO for 999,999 points of damage.
Anyone else thinks SWTOR needs a nerf (((? i've already noticed a 75% drop in the regular casual lotro players on creep side at least. Will it last forever????????????///////////

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

I am sorry to say SWTOR will keep people away until LOTRO releases something worth playing(Which they will).. I am not sure that SWTOR has the staying power that LOTRO does... But for now SWTOR is a LOT of fun to play(Once you get past their 1-4 hour que waits)...
But dont Fret people will return , and I am betting if there was something for LOTRO players to do (besides grind) then they will be back quicker....

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

Problem is as everyone knows Lotro became Lord of the Grind. I had a couple of level 50's when MoM hit and the grind wasn't too bad, then several 60's when SoM hit and still the grind wasn't too bad ... but I just can't face the following for my :

    * Grind 10 levels
    * Grind 2 more in every virtue
    * Bore myself to death grinding the new armour
    * Find both 3rd age LI's of level 75
    * Get full XP on them
    * Grind enough other LI's to get all the replacement scrolls
    * Skirm like crazy to build enough LI upgrade scrolls
    * Grind massive amounts of crafting bits to complete the new tier
    * Hand in a boat load of items to complete the new crafting reputation level
... Then start looking for 2nd age replacements.

I mean seriously - where is the fun in doing all that ... for EACH character ! Since I first looked at the list of 'things to do from SoM to RoI' I haven't even managed to summon enough enthusiasm to get one of my six level 65's to 75 yet and so not yet been on the new instances... so I can start to grind whatever new jewellery/other items they drop too.

On the bright side, whilst many, many of the older folks have moved on there are a large number of new ones knocking about both freep & creep. Many who do charge in and start action - these new folks are great !

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

Sorry, Peli, but SWTOR is really good.... LOTRO is self-torture and has been since book3 came. P2W, lies, greed, unbalanced pvp, extremely boring PvE in RoI, devs that don't even play the game, loss of soul, more corporate greed and the fact that creeps are viewed as pure punching bags for the allmighty freeps.

I will come back in the future if the above is fixed, but I fear P2W has only just started and in my eyes, that is the root to all evil in LOTRO.

But damn, I'm really enjoying SWTOR atm! The only minus is that there's no server forums and there's so many users on the normal forums that a thread will drop to page 3 within minutes. Poor community so far, but that will change. Especially since Gilrain's taking over Ahto City server.

Sith Inquisitor ftw! You can mold your character a lot more than in lotro, which I like. Too bad that I'm molding my sith Inquisitor as a nub(what you do is permanent) and I'm bound to make a serious mistake or two.

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

Every class in swtor has it mirror counterpart in opposite side. So think
about how op you would feel in lotro if creep classes had the exact same
skills and utitlities as freeps. Of course that is something
i dont want to be used in lotro but that ensures almost complete balance
between different sides. And that really is not as boring as it sounds

SWTOR is a great game, few things still to be sorted out with it, but that's to be expected with a brand new MMO. I do still play lotro a few hours per week, but I'm just sick of turbine's don't give a #### attitude to it's customers. When RoI was launched they had 1 new instance, that was bugged to hell and what did turbine do for 4 months? They made the GMs sit on their arses telling us to fill in bug reports...

Well I picked up my Collectors Edition today. €150 well spent. Playing since the early access started on the 13th, I can say that I look forward to talking about how SWTOR was in the very beginning, I think this game will last a long time.

Ive been subbed to Lotro for nearly 4 years now, time to cancel. I will still be playing though, it is F2P after all.

If you had titled your thread "SWTOR vs Lotro PvP" I might have seen where you were coming from, and maybe been a little hopeful.

But at least on my server, the PvE crowd is still bigger than pre-U5...glff population is as high as ever.

People who pvp are more likely to move to the "next big thing". But that's not a large enough portion of the overall LOTRO population to really make a blip.

I'm sure LOTRO will lose some people who're burnt out and need something new. But it keeps getting new people, so the population will probably stay steady.

    Don't panic.

Hey! i bought my SWTOR some time ago, but planning to start playing it somewhere around next week. The question is, what server are you all playing? I want to see some familiar faces, I don't want to be ronery

Think I'm going to roll bountyhunter. The mercenary tree looks very interesting.

I think most of gilrainians are in Ahto City (pvp server)? and some, like hope and glory?, are in Niman (pvp server also). Im playing atm (not too actively though) in Niman coz there are loads of Finnish players and kins there. :P

I pity you then, you'll have to face my superior Sith Inquisitor Assassin! hehehehehe

I'm guessing we're pretty much mirrors of each other, I'm getting my char as evil as can be. I don't know the advanced classes of other classes very well, but are you the sneaky kind or the rk/lm kind?

The problem is, i was only playing lotro in all hoensty all this time JUST for the community and people both from the ettens and just pure PvErs. But now that everyone has just stopped playing lotro it's not what it used to be and i will not wait around for people to come back if they are to at all. I have a strong feeling 90% of the people who left to SWTOR will not come back, and even if they do, SWTOR will still remain their main game. I also think its about time people also stop saying that they will come back to LOTRO when make the game more intresting :P we all know its NEVER going to happen.

I have no doubt the SWTOR is good as I really like Bioware and their games (BG, BGII, NWN, IWD I & II). However, all of the things you mentioned about LOTR above have been thrown at Bioware on their forums since Baldur's Gate- every single complaint (and I might note with far greater venom than you have seen here)! Those things have been thrown at every MMO out there. They will likely be thrown at SWTOR when people reach the endgame (or lack thereof).

I won't be playing SWTOR, primarily because I dislike the Old Republic storylines, glowbats, and would much rather have them create a post RotJ MMO with no player jedi. But good luck to those that do play it and like it.

SWTOR is not a game fueled by corporate greed so far and if that becomes the case in 4 years, I'll start playing something else. Companies need to make money, but Turbine took it it several notches too far and ruined it all. So far, SWTOR is a game where SKILL and EFFORT are EVERYTHING, unlike LOTRO where you can/must(must if creep as you must buy skills) pay your way to victory.

WoW has kept it going all these years without going LOTRO on their players, I expect SWTOR won't rush into ruin either.

And warder, sounds like we're in for some fun here! (not for you ofc, you'll just die and cry nerf nerf!)

Edit: Peli, any creep with respect for himself will go the dark side. Bounty Hunter sounds like your kind of game, or maybe Sith Warrior. Perhaps even Sith Inquisitor Sorceror, though that's more lm/rk. (but sorcerors got bubbles!)

Corporate greed goes hand-in-hand with anything involving Lucas. Lucas has ultimate say on anything dealing with his universe and Bioware will have just as much trouble as Sony did with him. I have seen tons of Star Wars things ruined by Lucas' lust for money- it hasn't happened yet to SWTOR, but the first hint that subs are dropping, or that it isn't pulling WOW numbers, and the meddling will start.

And I'm not defending Turbine's decisions here, but the MMO business landscape has changed over the years, and most of old schoolers aren't going to like the path they are taking (F2P/RMT/P2W).

Perhaps SWTOR will learn from LOTRO. Anyways, it isn't like that now and that's all that matters.

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

Going for SWTOR mainly because lotro has gone downhill for a some time now. The RoI was just big grindfest, just think about levelling from 65-70. Picking up nails and killing boars, same stuff that you do at shire.

And the PvP. I love our community and Gilrain feels like another home. The PvP is in very awful state, turbine has become too greedy and instead of making new content they give creeps some boxes that you can open via store.

This game has become too P2W to be enjoyable anymore. Not coming back until Turbine learns from it's mistakes. I want back SoA era and heck! MoM was awesome too, and the details. I see nothing in RoI that stands out to be as cool as some Moria areas. Seems like they have new amateur coders working for them. No soul in their work.

I hope to see some of you people on Ahto city server where i'm going as bountyhunter (Hire me if ya don't like someone )
Not going back to lotro until it is in better state. Maybe sometimes i log in to chat with my kinnies.

*pat bird on the head and wishes all the best*

Yay, PvP took a huge dive on swtor release date, 20th december. This goes for all servers as far as I can see, pretty much cutting PvP with 50% on many servers. (inf/ren)

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

I guess it doesn't matter but I can say I will stay in LotrO.

I havent looked up to much info about SWtor becouse I have spent so much time with LotrO and I still find it very entertaining, I can understand that most PvPers leave LotrO becouse PvP has been the same in 4yrs and they don't give us something new but Turbine stated in the beginning of LotrO that PvMP is just a mini-game and not something they will put much energy or money on. I think it's good that there actually are updates to EM from time to time.

At PvE side I havent been disappointed that much, Instances are cool or atleast OK, I like the storyline.

And one thing I hate about SWtor, I don't like the Lightsaber-age starwars I wan't the real classic starwars.
It could be low gafics or so but also screenshots on Swtor... I don't like them, everything looks so plastic.

But we will se if my brother can get me to play SWtor, he was the one to get me to plat LotrO :P

    Re: SWTOR vs Lotro

Let's not bash Lotro too much - Gilrain is after all our "spiritual mmo home" - I doubt many of us can cite another game where we've spent more time simply because of the fantastic community.

Lotro has its problems, but so do all MMOs, and SWTOR will have its own brand of issues; it's only had a few days so far... let's not say hasty stuff like "I'm never coming back to Lotro evah!".

I reduced my Lotro playing to just token logging on for a chat for over two years, because I was captivated by WoW. My lust for that game waned however, and I returned to Lotro. I'm now playing Swtor but both WoW and Lotro will seduce me back in their own time

I'm sorry that EM and the general server population is suffering this week, but all of these things come in waves, and I'm sure Lotro is strong enough to weather this storm; just as it survived the big Age of Conan departure, the Aion one, and all the other games that everyone raved about, left for, and then... returned from

Guildwars 2 is going to get launched at some point in the future too - people are excited about that. The same thing will no doubt happen.

Granted SWTOR seems AMAZING right now, but so did all the other games at launch. It will have to deliver relentlessly at raid and level cap to really be worth logging on for years to come. For how long will the fantastic storylines be exciting once you've already listened to that NPC offering you a deal several times on other toons? The game play is still basically just like all other mmos - kill this, collect these, click on this glowing section here, return to NPC. The combat that I've tried so far is very satisfying (SI, BH and IA), but then so is RK

I will make my judgement once I'm locked into months of raiding and still utterly captivated by the challenges the game presents me. So far, only two raids have really done that for me; the Rift in Lotro (I spent probably a year in there in total without getting too bored) and Icecrown Citadel 25 in WoW. The Cataclysm raids just haven't done the same thing, and nor have any of the lotro raids since.
