    Issues with timing and tempo

Apologies if this question has been asked, but I was unable to find an answer by searching this forum.

I'm having trouble understanding what Lotro is doing with the temp of an Abc if I add a time signature for an abc.

I have a waltz (converted using my own midi to abc converter) and it plays fine without a time signature. If, I add a time signature to it "M:3/4" then the tempo of the piece doubles.

    Code:
    X: 1
    L: 1/4
    Q: 160
    K: C
    M: 3/4
% With the time signature 'M: 3/4' commented or removed
% this plays at half the speed, which is the correct speed

    [e2E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [B1E/2G/2] z/2 [g2E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2]
    z/2 [e1E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [b5/4E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2z/4] b3/4
    [b1E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [b1E,/2] z/2 [a/2E/2G/2B/2] g/2 [^f/2E/2G/2B/2] e/2
    [B1B,/2] z/2 [^d1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [^f1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [a1B,/2] z/2
    [g1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [^f1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [e/2E,/2] ^d/2
    [e/2E/2G/2B/2] ^f/2 [g/2E/2G/2B/2] a/2 [b/2B,/2] e/2
    [b/2B,/2^D/2^F/2A/2] a/2 [g/2B,/2^D/2^F/2A/2] ^f/2 [e2E,/2] z/2
    [E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [B1E/2G/2] z/2 [g2E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2] z/2
    [e1E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [b5/4E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2z/4] b3/4 [b1E/2G/2B/2]
    z/2 [b1E,/2] z/2 [a/2E/2G/2B/2] g/2 [^f/2E/2G/2B/2] e/2 [B1B,/2] z/2
    [^d1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [^f1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [a1B,/2]
I am hoping that someone can explain as to what happens when a time signature is added and if this is Lotro specific, or something about time signatures and abc's that I am not understanding.

    Any help appreciated.

Here's a little discussion about timing problems although I don't see how your experience fits in any of the explanations given there at the moment.

Re: Issues with timing and tempo

As you've discovered, the LotRO ABC music system doesn't require the "M:" (meter) line, but it also is still able to recognize it.

It was required in older ABC formats (And I still use it myself) but it's not required in LotRO.

If you do want to use it, you'll need to make a slight modification of adding your "L:" (Unit Note Length) value, in this case "1/4" to your "Q:" (Tempo) line of your ABC file header, in the following manner:

    Change your "Q: 160" to "Q: 1/4=160"

That will solve the issue your having.

    Hope this helps you.

From looking at the discussion, this seems to be a bug in the way Lotro is reading the tempo.

I haven't tried this out in Lotro yet, but the tempo remained too fast when it was played in Digero's ABC Player, so I wouldn't expect it to work in Lotro.

This isn't really a problem as I can just adjust the tempo to "Q: 80". I was mainly interested in looking at the time signature for my midi to abc converter.

    Thanks for the answers!

Re: Issues with timing and tempo

I actually made the changes, I suggested above to you, and tested it both ingame and in ABC Player and it plays at the proper tempo (total run time of 0:15 seconds), before posting my suggestions to you.

Your changes should look like this:

    Code:
    X: 1
    L: 1/4
    Q: 1/4=160
    K: C
    M: 3/4
% With the time signature 'M: 3/4' commented or removed
% this plays at half the speed, which is the correct speed

    [e2E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [B1E/2G/2] z/2 [g2E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2]
    z/2 [e1E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [b5/4E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2z/4] b3/4
    [b1E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [b1E,/2] z/2 [a/2E/2G/2B/2] g/2 [^f/2E/2G/2B/2] e/2
    [B1B,/2] z/2 [^d1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [^f1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [a1B,/2] z/2
    [g1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [^f1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [e/2E,/2] ^d/2
    [e/2E/2G/2B/2] ^f/2 [g/2E/2G/2B/2] a/2 [b/2B,/2] e/2
    [b/2B,/2^D/2^F/2A/2] a/2 [g/2B,/2^D/2^F/2A/2] ^f/2 [e2E,/2] z/2
    [E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [B1E/2G/2] z/2 [g2E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2] z/2
    [e1E/2G/2B/2] z/2 [b5/4E,/2] z/2 [E/2G/2B/2z/4] b3/4 [b1E/2G/2B/2]
    z/2 [b1E,/2] z/2 [a/2E/2G/2B/2] g/2 [^f/2E/2G/2B/2] e/2 [B1B,/2] z/2
    [^d1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [^f1B,/2^D/2^F/2] z/2 [a1B,/2]
As I said, just out of habit in dealing with older ABC standards, in regard to my header, I always include this information in my ABC files, without the issues you're having.

Clip the above and try it for yourself, then compare the above, to the change you made, to make sure you made the change in the right location.

Of course, the easiest correction is to simply remove the "M:" (Meter) line from your header, as LotRO's music system doesn't require it's use (it again, has a total run time of 0:15 seconds with the removal of the "M:" header line).
