Red face The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

Then the voices of the Ainur, like unto harps and lutes, and pipes and trumpets, and viols and organs, and like unto countless choirs singing with words, began to fashion the theme of Iluvatar to a great music ; and the sound arose of endless interchanging melodies woven in harmony - J.R.R. Tolkien - Ainulindale - The Silmarillion

"Now for the music!" said Thorin. " Bring out the instruments !" -J.R.R.Tolkien - An Unexpected Party - The Hobbit

When every guest had been welcomed and was finally inside the gate, there were songs, dances, music, games, and , of course, food and drink. -J.R.R. Tolkien - A Long-Expected Party - The Fellowship of the Rings

Welcome to the Laurelin's Concert Hall!

Laurelin is a lovely place, filled with nice people and wonderful music. In fact the love of music is something we probably all have in common, regardless of our Role Play and gaming styles. Professor Tolkien love for music is well known, you can find beautiful songs and melodies throughout Middle-earth.

The purpose of this thread is to give you a relaxing and fun place where to share the music and melodies that inspire you. Similar to a "What Are You Listening to Right Now" thread but with a Middle-earth twist.

Share and enjoy, and most of all, have fun! Please always remember to be kind and polite to all the contributors and respect the Community Guidelines

In a Concert Hall in the ground there lived a hobbit.....

*Amorey hums quietly a lovely melody*

    Mithrandir

Let the night never cease to call you
Let the day nevermore be the same
Though you've gone where we cannot find you
In each heart you have set your name

    Mithrandir far you wander
And long may your name be sung
    Through kingdoms of starlight
    And realms of the sun
    Mithrandir though you're hidden
We're still guided by your light
    You're walking beside us
    A friend in the night

We were lost when the dark descended
And the light gathered into a storm
You appeared like a sunlit morning
At the winds of a world at war

    Mithrandir far you wander
And long may your name be sung
    Through kingdoms of starlight
    And realms of the sun
    Mithrandir though you're hidden
We're still guided by your light
    You're walking beside us
    A friend in the night

    Mithrandir rising through the shadow
Like a star shining deep in its home
You will dwell in our hearts forever
    Nevermore will we stand alone

Ehm...not sure if I follow.. you mean this thread to be the "music hall"? Is there a new building in Laurelin?
an old one converted to this use? *scratches his head*

..and on another note... could you say hi to me ingame? Got a little thing i would like to discuss and hear
your thought of :-) (not suited for the forums....yet...)

    *waves to Grymrock and smiles*

The idea of this thread was simply to give the community a place where to share music and melodies that inspires us in our adventures in Middle-earth. It can be any kind of music, folk , ballads , rock , and more , anything that we like to listen to and sometime play in game . It is really a ' What Are You Listening to Right Now ' thread for those that wish to use it. Will be lovely to see you again in game, Master Grymrock , I shall travel to Bree over the next few days, hope to meet you at the Pony for a ale and a chat

My inspirational tune for today is Lay of Nimrodel

An Elven-maid there was of old,
    A shining star by day:
Her mantle white was hemmed with gold,
    Her shoes of silver-grey.

A star was bound upon her brows,
A light was on her hair
As sun upon the golden boughs
    In Lórien the fair.

Her hair was long, her limbs were white,
    And fair she was and free;
And in the wind she went as light
    As leaf of linden-tree.

    Beside the falls of Nimrodel,
    By water clear and cool,
Her voice as falling silver fell
    Into the shining pool.

Where now she wanders none can tell,
    In sunlight or in shade;
For lost of yore was Nimrodel
    And in the mountains strayed.

    The elven-ship in haven grey
    Beneath the mountain-lee
Awaited her for many a day
    Beside the roaring sea.

A wind by night in Northern lands
    Arose, and loud it cried,
And drove the ship from elven-strands
    Across the streaming tide.

When dawn came dim the land was lost,
    The mountains sinking grey
Beyond the heaving waves that tossed
    Their plumes of blinding spray.

    Amroth beheld the fading shore
    Now low beyond the swell,
And cursed the faithless ship that bore
    Him far from Nimrodel.

Of old he was an Elven-king,
A lord of tree and glen,
When golden were the boughs in spring

Re: The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

A song that I wrote myself It is about the Battle of Unnumbered Tears or better known as Nirnaeth Arnoediad

I am still working on a melody, but I have in mind to mix celtic and metal for it. In probably such a style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtdvoKpLevc.
    Silver Bright & Star Alight

The Noldor's strength undimmed and bright,
Before Angband, five days they fight.
    Sons of the Cursed King,
    Letting far their voices ring.
But through evil and deceitful lies,
There lets Morgoth his host in darkness rise.

    Thence Turgon came,
To aid his brother Fingon, blood the same.
And with him came the host of Gondolin,
Shining mail and silver spears they've ever been.
Then trompets' sound rang unto the cloud
And far to be heard was Fingon's shout:

"Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlië'n aurë!"

Those who down by ashes bravely fought,
Far aloft was now their thought.
    "Auta i lómë!",
    The elves there called,
And stabbed by Azaghâl's blade, the dragon-father crawled,
Back into Angband's depths, dungeons of so very old.

But fate struck Fingon in Gothmog's form,
The elven king so high and worn,
    The Balrogs sought to overwhelm,
Into two was cloven then the Silver Helm.

    Thus fell the king,
    His star went dim
    His banner silver-blue,
    Morgoth's Darkness overthrew.

But Húrin and Huor, bravest men
    Highest legend they became.
    Singing Húrin hurled his axe:
    "Aurë entuluva!"

    Such glory of the past,
    Heroes, wars and sorrow vast;
    Held now in ancient lore,
Was never seen like this once more.

Saturday means rest, relaxation and of course, time spent in Middle-earth and in my wonderful Shire...

    ...My Land

How green are your valleys, how blue your great skies,
    Your mountains stand tall in their glory;
Your rivers run free- the bright stars are your eyes,
Your beauty is endless before me.

For you are the song ever singing in me,
    And you are the heart ever true;
For you are my land and you always will be,
The voice ever calling me home to you.

When to your green valleys some day I return,
    When you lay your mantle around me;
At rest I will be where the heart will not yearn,
Then my land will ever surround me.

*waves and looks a bit sleepy*

Oh well, an other lovely weekend gone, more music to inspire the nice people of Laurelin . I was reading the wonderful poem Smile that my friend Simbo just posted in The Laurelin Poetry Corner. There is nothing more special and precious then true friendship. Like the very unique bond Frodo and Sam have....

    Now And For Always

    SAM
Sing me a story of heroes of the Shire,
    Muddling through,
    Brave and true.
Stubborn as bindweed and tough as old briar,
    Never too showy or grand.
    Year after year
    They persevere
    Now and for always.

Harfoots who planted and Stoor folk
    who ploughed,
    Bred to endure,
    Slow but sure.
    Fallohide blood in your veins
    makes you proud,
    Sturdy and steady they stand.
    True to their aim
    To stay the same
    Now and for always.

    SAM+ FRODO
    Sit by the firelight's glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell of adventures strange and rare-
    Never to change
    Ever to share
    Stories we tell will cast
    their spell
    Now and for always

    SAM
Sing me a story of Frodo
    and the ring,
    Fearless and bold

    FRODO
    Tired and cold.

    SAM
Sword at his side, and elf-blade
    called sting,
    Crossing a mis'rable land.
    Wouldn't retreat
    Just followed his feet.
    Now and for always.

    SAM+FRODO
    Sit by the firelight's glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell of adventures strange and rare-
    Never to change
    Ever to share
    Stories we tell will cast
    their spell
    Now and for always

    FRODO
Sing me a tale of the bravest of them all.
    Comrade and guide
    At my side.
    Stout-hearted Sam who wouldn't
    let me fall,
Holding my life in his hand.
    True to the end,
    No finer friend.
    Now and for always.

    SAM+FRODO
    Sit by the firelight's glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell of adventures strange and rare-
    Never to change
    Ever to share
    Stories we tell will cast
    their spell
    Now and for always

Re: The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

"If the hobbit loves music, all is well in the land"

And so I wish to keep sharing lovely tunes for it is very true that music can inspire, give happiness and even heal the soul of men, dwarves, elves, and of course, hobbits. My choice today is a song named The Edge of Night ,the melody was composed by Billy Boyd who played Peregrin Took in Peter Jackson's Trilogy . In Tolkien's book Pippin never sung this melody but the words of The Edge of Night are inspired by The Walking Song that Professor Tolkien wrote.

The version I share with you today is beautiful and haunting, I guess Amorey would sound like this if she was to sing...

The Edge of Night ( female cover)

The Edge of Night (Billy Boyd)

    Home is behind
    The world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
    Through shadow
    To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

    Mist and shadow
    Cloud and shade
    All shall fade
    All shall .....fade.

    It'll do

Lyrics and music by Randy Newman.

A kind and steady heart can make a grey sky blue
And a task that seems impossible, Is quite possible for you
A kind and steady heart is sure to see you through
It may not seem like very much right now
    It'll do, it'll do

When you find yourself in the middle of a storm
And you're tired and cold, and wet
And you're looking for a place that's cozy and warm
You'll make it, if you never forget

A kind and steady heart can conquer doubt and fear
A little courage goes a long, long way
Gets you a little bit further down the road each day
And before you know it, you'll hear someone say,
    "That'll do, pig. That'll do."

A kind and steady heart is sure to see you through
A little courage goes a long, long way
Gets you a little bit further down the road each day
And before you know it, you'll hear someone say,
    "That'll do, that'll do
    That'll do, pig. That'll do."

Red face Re: The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

Thank you , Phede , I did add that lovely song to my favourites

Well, an other week, an other tune to inspire - today I go all 'elvish-style' and I chose the song Lasto I Lamath from the Prologue of Lord of the Rings- The Musical as performed at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London a few years ago. Many of the elven songs in the musical feature lyrics in Quenya, despite the fact that the Elves during the Third Age communicated mostly in Sindarin. It is likely that the writers opted for Quenya because Tolkien had developed this language the most. The song Lasto I Lamath is sung in the Prologue of the performance by Arwen

    Lasto I Lamath

    i-ngwaew asia wintar
ar i ardh iaur u dara.
    erui men uvill
    gomen amdiram
    orthored i wath.

    Lasto i Lamath
    erin gwaew
    i lamath lin edair
    avo osto!
    aphada ven thane
    ar u dhir tira
    last' inn tegitha

    Translate to:

    The winds of change blow
and the old world will not remain
    separate we are vulnerable,
    together we may hope
    to conquer the shadow.

    Listen to the voices
    on the wind,
    the voices of your forefathers.
    do not be afraid!
there is a choice to make

Text note: Literally "you follow a forked road"
    and none can help you.
listen, your instinct will lead you.

Tis a magical November morning where I am, here in the Southfarthing. Mist is covering the lake in front of my burrow and I am getting ready for a day of music practice in preparation for Archet Aid on Monday. So here I am sipping some nice hot tea and humming a small tune I love so much.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend, full of music, smiles and love

Though I realize, concidering my RP background and all, this kind of music may surprise.... it's pretty much what I listen too when I'm questing, and not being Mae or Lotti. It's very inspiring to me, and certainly is what I'm listening to now

If I'm like, chillin' then Enya works, or Clannad. Like a bit of Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Jethro Tull when I'm doing my hobbit's farming vocation.

Yule fast approaching, the many talented bands of Laurelin are getting ready to celebrate the festive season with music and events. Both Hobbit Heart and The Chosen Few are busy preparing for a magical time. I also want to mention a The Tavern Spirits , a fantastic ensemble I had the pleasure to listen to last night.

    You are most welcome

This morning I woke up tired but a beautiful melody keeps playing in my head and in my heart. When I listen to this song I always think to my beloved Brightdown in the Southfarthing, and I dream that one day I will be able to move back to where I belong.

Is it a kind of dream,
    Floating out on the tide,
Following the river of death downstream?
    Oh, is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon,
A strange glow in the sky,
And nobody seems to know where you go,
    And what does it mean?
    Oh, is it a dream?

    Bright eyes,
    Burning like fire.
    Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
    Suddenly burn so pale?
    Bright eyes.

Is it a kind of shadow,
    Reaching into the night,
    Wandering over the hills unseen,
    Or is it a dream?

There's a high wind in the trees,
A cold sound in the air,
And nobody ever knows when you go,
    And where do you start,
    Oh, into the dark.

    Bright eyes,
    burning like fire.
    Bright eyes,
how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
    Suddenly burn so pale?
    Bright eyes.

    Bright eyes,
    burning like fire.
    Bright eyes,
how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
    Suddenly burn so pale?
    Bright eyes.

Re: The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

Words by JRR Tolkien, as sung by Galenswerd of the Lonely Mountain Band

    The Song of Durin's Awakening

The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.

    He named the nameless hills and dells;
    He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadow of his head.

The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
    Of Mighty kings in Nargothrond
    And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin’s Day.

A king he was on carven throne
    In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone forever fair and bright.

There hammer on the anvil smote,
    There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
    There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes’ mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.

    Unwearied then were Durin’s folk;
    Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.

The world is grey, the mountains old,
    The forge’s fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
    The darkness dwells in Durin’s halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
    In Moria, in Khazad-dûm.

But still the sunken stars appear
    In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.
    Till Durin wakes from sleep…

Smile Re: The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

Small poem about Autumn I wrote.

    Come here, here and now!
The leaves change color, it seems only the elves know how
The moon comes up much sooner now, much difference than summer
To miss such a season like this would be a bummer!

    I know, I know. Really bad. ;(

*smiles happily as she sits next to a warm fire , surrounded by music sheets, A cup of hot tea and a few freshly-backed muffins on a small side table*

Yule is such a magical time. In the bleak mid-winter , a light shines bright. Tis a time to keep all your friends and your family real close and remember what is really important in our lives. Twill be an enchanted Yule in the Shire, and much lovely music will be heard in the Place Where I Belong

Red face Re: The Laurelin's Concert Hall - Music and Melodies to Inspire

The very beautiful Galadriel's Song of Eldamar, Ai! Laurië Lantar from the Tolkien Ensemble, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's writings and poems.

    Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
    Yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
    Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
    mi oromardi lisse-miruvóreva
    Andúnë pella, Vardo tellumar
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
    ómaryo airetári-lírinen.

Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva?

    An sí Tintallë Varda Oiolossëo
    ve fanyar máryat Elentári ortanë
    ar ilyë tier undulávë lumbulë;
    ar sindanóriello caita mornië
i falmalinnar imbë met, ar hísië
    untúpa Calaciryo míri oialë.
Sí vanwa ná, Rómello vanwa, Valimar!

    Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar.
    Nail elyë hiryva. Namárië!

    English Translation:

Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
The long years have passed like swift draughts
of the sweet mead in lofty halls
beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda
    wherein the stars tremble
in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.

Who now shall refill the cup for me?

For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars,
from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds
    and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;
and out of a grey country darkness lies
on the foaming waves between us,
and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.
Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar!

Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar!
Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!

The Tolkien Ensemble (founded in 1995) is a Danish ensemble with the aim to create “the worlds first complete musical interpretation of the poems and songs from The Lord of the Rings”. The project was given approval by the Tolkien family
