    So... why the spear?

Hey fellow Wardens. I've come to you with a question that has been bugging my mind.
Why are we pigeonholed into spears when it looks like we are just as effective with swords or maces? I'm looking at the weapon expertise that I gained at level 20... they are all the same. I am just 22 but spears don't seem to have any "extra" than mace or sword don't get to make me pick it up. Yes, i am wearing a spear, and yes I will wear one but only because it's expected of me and told on countless guides. My question is why?
Do spears get a unique master expertise skill on higher levels that swords and maces do not?

Yes - you'll get a 'spear mastery' trait around lvl 50. +2% damage and a multiplier for the inherent bleed. Different racial traits can add that same damage bonus to other weapons. Roll with what you like.

If you're interested in maximum effectiveness, spear/sword for men and elves, spear/club for hobbits. Spear animations look the best, so that's what I use.

Proficiency is one thing for me, along with the spear bleed damage you get as a passive "bonus" for spear use. It's pretty cool to stack 4 bleeds on your opponent (3 gambit-based, 1 spear-based).

I also have 6x 65's so I like using a different weapon based on the class of my character. Spears are pretty weak with other classes but the bonuses for Wardens make it a worthwhile weapon.

Thumbs up Re: So... why the spear?

Spear is probably your highest dps choice, since it causes bleeds, but swords and clubs are both useful in many situations too.

But also keep in mind that the word 'spear' has multiple meanings in the warden world. It could refer to the weapon, but it also refers to your gambit builders (your Quick Thrust skill gives you a 'spear' builder), 'spear' gambits, and your dps oriented traitline 'Way of the Spear'. Gambits starting with a 'spear' builder are called spear gambits, even if you aren't using a spear as your weapon.

Undo the U12 class changes. The trait trees were, are, and will always be a bad idea.

As Geoboy said the animations of the spear are awesome and thats what I currently use but with ROI I will go back to using a sword with the elf racial trait. I would use one now but the only 65 2nd ager I had available was a spear. Really its just a personal choice.

Generally use a spear, but I recently picked up a dagger somewhere with the perfect DPS legacies all already on it and fairly high-tiered as well (this never, ever happens to me, I have been known to cry for joy if I get a weapon with any useful legacy on it....). So it's become my solo weapon for the nonce.

As far as I know, the club is the best warden tanking weapon because of the -attack speed debuff. However, no spartan use a silly club, spear ftws

What's more important, full effectiveness or looking cool?

I considered for long time picking up a Club as my main tankin LI, if you trait GMWT it really shines among other weapons when it comes to tanking.

But a warden (man warden at least) using a Club is just too fuggly... I tried, but looking cool is just cooler i'd say.

I'm going to go with a sword as a tanking LI and spear for dps. Figure the to hit bonus and non-bleed attack will be better for tanking, especially when you consider the finesse mechanic being added. I like the proc bleed on spears though for my epic dps.

Not entirely sure, since hopefully it will be covered in the Dev diary, but.. you may find the changes in GMWT will make spears more attactive, at least on paper.

Oh and the intrinsic bleed just from using a spear as an additional bleed when draining a boss is just .. awesome, even at level 65. At the OPs level tho, I used a sword for the plus to hit bonus for my hewmon.. I use a spear on my level 19 baby elf warden tho. Seeing 4 bleeds on a mob just made me all warm and fuzzy.. SIGH.. unfortunately, with the changes in bleeds, that also may be a thing of the past.

You've got a nice spear notch in all warden shields. Tough to poke a sword through the same spot. I'm currently using a sword right now (due to man-bonus and an alt SM weaponsmith) but I use spear when I can. But that also means if you are on the AH warden spears cost a premium.

I think (not sure) if you work your bleeds from biggest to smallest, none will be consumed and will remain on your target for the entire 16 seconds. The consuming bleeds were added to make bleeds have an 'up front' damage component making them viable on normals and signatures, who would die well before the bleeds all ticked away.

I think on elites or bosses having all the bleeds up for their entire duration is more dps.

    Re: So... why the spear?

To be honest I never noticed my spear even applied a bleed until my first time fighting Flagit in DN. Took a few cycles to figure out I was the guilty party healing the boss. I was sure I wasn't doing any gambits that produce DoT's. So after someone with a warden figured out it was my spear I wasn't sure if I could just disable auto-attack or whether any gambit with a spear builder was going to cause a bleed so I just stood back and tossed Javelin's and spammed Conviction using masteries.
