    Best skirmish soldier for Guardians

Just getting into this skirmish thing and greatly enjoyed soloing Tuckborough last night.

I decided to go for a healer for my soldier and it seemed to work well. It's also a fairly straightforward interaction for my guardian - tank for my healer and it will all be alright. And it was!

What do people far more experienced than me think are the best soldiers for Guardians in different set ups? Different skirmishes and also, different group sizes (obviously, it depends who else is in the group, of course).

    Advice and anecdotes eagerly anticipated.

Now personally, I don't go for the Herbalist. Heals are nice, but the great thing about skirmishes like Trouble in Tuckburough is you can for the most part set your own pace. When it comes to skirmishing on my Guardian, the answer is always more dps. I go for the Archer or the Warrior. I preffer the warrior for most circumstances as the archer can be a bit buggy. As Guardian your mitigations are adequate to survive most encounters in skirmishes regardless of which trait line you focus on and the added DPS just makes it go that much quicker. Hope this helps.

i have two pets, the bannerguard and the herbalist. i sword and board solo and havent used OP since they made it unusable with a shield equipped so when soloing the extra DPS, damage shield, and the heal make skirmishes quick and easy. when grouping i use the herbalist for the power/morale regen. the bonus to this is i can use all but one of their traits (cant recall what they call them but its not the abilities or personal trait the one third on the list) are shared so all i have to do is change the class/abilities depending on if im grouping or solo. another bonus is that if there are already a few herbalists i got a back up pet.

the herbalist was my first pet though. it wasnt until i got my current gear set and stabilized my power management that i felt the bannerguard was more beneficial.

edit: oh also the bannerguard can OT in the solo skirms also (not well but well enough for my char).

Really good leaders can lead without anyone even realizing the fact. And the elite few that make their grip on power known, exert their power in such a way that no one really cares they are being manipulated.

For skirm farming, a DPS soldier (warrior, archer) will always speed things up. For T3 solo skirms, I still use a DPS soldier but I usually get there in my best survival setup. For group skirmishes, you can pick a DPS soldier since you are very likely to run with people who can either heal or who picked an herbalist.

I picked an herbalist to level my champion, because he was a bit squishy. If you feel squishy on your guard, it's not the pet's fault.

    Thanks guys

I don't feel especially squishy and I do appreciate the advice. The bannerguard sounds like a good compromise for my playstyle, and less likely to out dps me than an archer or warrior. Don't want my pet giving it large back at the camp

i use a herbalist, but i am doing skirmishes only now for leveling. i am lvl 33 now. So overpower and Herbalist works very good for me. but then again i do skirmishes 3 lvl's higher than my own.
Otherwise on 65 i dont know. Use a herbalist on my Champ(65) also.

Posted this in another thread I think, but I go OP and use herbalist for power and heals. I find that if I dont have power issues, then I am able to do pump out more dps than when I use a warrior (I have had a warrior, bannerguard, and now a herbalist). I also did not like that my warrior liked to take the lead a lot and aggro'd stuff before I was quite ready, hmmmm, AI plays like a lot of champs I have grouped with.

    ^^ I second this.

I slot Ultimate: Word of Flame, Weakening Draught, Word of Battle, and Oil of the Dragon's Rage. Hold the aggro and let the sage nuke mobs as you keep them close together.

I like my Warrior. I had a sage and didn't like how she was always far from me.... I can pull mobs into groups for the warrior.

The sage is good but doesn't have as much dps as the warrior. I am also not a fan of the healer because mobs take a lot longer to take out. In the end I find the warrior to be the best option. Great aoe dps and good single target dps ends fights quickly wether you are in OP or going sword and board.

Re: Best skirmish soldier for Guardians

I'm new to the skirmish myself & I find that the Banner-guard works best for my means. I've tried the warrior in the beginning & then a archer, they keep dieing off too fast to be of any use to me.

I would try the Herbalist but I lack the points for the change at the moment.

I use the sage most of the time. The debuffs and tactical dps seems to compliment my guardian in almost every solo skirmish.

If your skirmish soldier dies, you are probably also new to tanking

No it's not that. The warrior would rush ahead & get himself killed before I can pull the mobs off of him & the archer wasn't working out.

Re: Best skirmish soldier for Guardians

I started using a herbalist, which was really neat at low/mid levels, counting the fact that I wanted to speed up the whole run using OP stance. Our class forgoes quite some survivability at those levels while using OP, so the extra healing/power regen was a key factor to pick a herbalist. After I built up my LIs for OP post lvl 60 , I went for a Warrior, because I figured out that by just eating some food/using pots could easily make the herbalist quite useless.

A Warrior really helps up sweeping the incoming waves when AOE-traited and can even survive with 2-3 mobs on him with relative ease, if you invest a decent amount of marks to build him/her up .

The nice thing about sage or archer over warrior is that you can easily see when you don't have aggro, which is great if you want to practice your tanking in skirms.

The warrior also has a tendency to wander ahead and make the pull, which is something that you should get used to doing - on a squishy it's a viable strategy but doesn't make sense for a tanking class.

I originally had an Herbalist - I switched to Sage because I got to keep some of my invested skills and I swear that it was the best move I could have made.

I use a Protector, I slot the self heal ability, and have Hvy Armor, AE DPS, and High Level 1 hit DPS all maxed. I like being able to have my soldier tank for me too, I can pull agro when needed, and I most time NEVER need to be healed. My power is not much of a problem either. So I use the Protector to make sure my soldier can pull agro and barely ever dies.
