    Crafting Legendary Weapons

Is there a point to crafting level 60 legendary weapons? I'm fairly new to all of this, and whilst my woodworker can craft all kinds of LIs, I'm wondering - why would I craft items that are going to take a lot of expensive materials instead of just picking them up off of mobs/trading rusted tools? Especially if you're going to outgrow the DPS on them in a couple of levels.

Can anyone give me a quick rundown on the difference between a second age and third age level 60 LI?

    I'm - confused - at this point.

    Thanks.

Max DPS for lvl 60 Second age 2-hander is 67.9, max DPS for lvl 60 Third Age 2-hander is 65.3. You would need lvl 62 Third Age 2-hander to beat lvl 60 Second age 2-hander.
Max DPS for lvl 60 Second Age 1-hander is 59.9, max DPS for lvl 60 Third Age 1-hander is 57.6. You would need lvl 62 Third Age 1-hander to beat lvl 60 Second age 2-hander.

Second Age items offer more legacy points to spend (650 for 2nd age vs 590 for 3rd age).
Also all legacies that increase ratings start one step higher on second agers than third agers. For example Guardians legacy for Overwhelm Crit rating start at +1052 on lvl 60 3rd ager, but starts at +1126 on lvl 60 2nd ager. Also it takes less ranks (thus less legacy points) to max this legacy on 2nd ager.

Those are raw facts. Whether you consider lvl 60 2nd ager worth the effort or not, is your decision. Lvl 60 2nd agers are not that hard to craft BTW. Mithril flakes are easy to get and so are legendary shards.

EDIT: As far as I remember, there are no lvl60 barterable 3rd agers (correct me if I'm wrong). You can barter lvl 59 for Khuzdul Tablets and then lvl 61 for Malledhrim Bronze Tokens.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

Thank you. Without actually making one, I couldn't see the stats, and the forum search is hit or miss at best.

I know it's not that pricey, was just wondering why make mithril infused mallorn, etc. when there are third-agers falling left and right. My guess would be that if you craft second agers, you can use them to 65 without sacrificing DPS, thereby you can level them up more and get some better stuff on deconstruction?

If so, it's definitely worth doing.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

Short answer: there really is no point running around with a lvl 60 weapon regardless of age, unless of course you ARE level 60.
Weapons have dps ranges based on the base level and age, and lvl 65 3rd agers start higher enough that they are superior. For casters the tactical damage rating is significant dps and as such this statement is valid for their weapons too. Once you hit level 65 you should therefore trash the level 60 item and use level 65 3rd age ones, or 2nd age when you get your hands on that.

You can craft level 65 weapons too, those are on the other hand useful.
A rundown on difference between ages of items on same level:
(Assumption is that you raise your weapons level 70, lvl 65 1handed weapon used in example. Number on dps change on bows and 2handers, but are proportional)

    3rd age: DPS 71.8 - legacypoints to spend 670
IXP to reach lvl 70: 1267K - last 40 levels is 2/3 of this (20K ixp pr lvl)

    2nd age: DPS 74.6 - legacypoints to spend 750
IXP to reach lvl 70: 2067K - last 40 levels is 4/5 of this (40K ixp pr lvl)

    1st age: DPS 78.5 - lecacypoints to spend 830
IXP to reach lvl 70: 3667K - last 40 levels is 8/9 of this (80K ixp pr lvl)

As you notice, you have to get a very steep increase in IXP to get the dps and legacy point raise from a 2nd and expecially a 1st ager. 2nd and 1st agers are therefore best used as ultimate weapons that you upgrade to from a maxed 3rd ager, as they take quite some time to level up to their full potential.

The numbers above only change on dps for level 60 items, but as 2nd and 1st age weapons wouldnt have enough IXP to be developed(ranking up the legacies to useful levels) beside the DPS until you more or less hit level cap, there isnt a big point in using them while you level, or after. Note that they are ok to level up to max dps rank and keep till you hit lvl 65, but it wouldnt have alot of points leftover to spend on damage enhancing legacies before you get to 65. I say this because my experience is that from 61-65 I can get 4 lvl 61 items barely levelled up to 30 when I hit cap, ie its not alot of item exp to be gained while you level those levels. Adding ixp pills if you have some would help, but then you wont have those available for your level 65 legendaries.
A second age lvl 60 1h weapon have max dps of 59.9 and a 65 3rd age has minimum dps of 56.2 on dps rank 1, and thats why you trash lvl 60 DPS weapons no matter what. Different story for a heal or buff weapon as it is the legacies on the weapon you want on those btw.

You didnt ask about level 60 class items, and I think woodworkers dont make any so this should hopefully be enlightening for you.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

I crafted lvl 60 2nd age Guardians Belt for myself and my alt crafted lvl 60 2nd age 1-h and 2-h. I was lucky and got very nice legacies on them. I used them all up to lvl 65. Maybe it was not super uber efficient in terms of DPS, but I had absolutely no problems killing mobs and questing/skirmishing. The moment you hit 61, fill as many slots as you can with lvl 61 legendaries (in addition to the ones you use). You'll be able to snag a fair bit of legendary fragments that are used for crafting lvl 65 second agers. Plus big IXP runes are cool too.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

I was planning to craft them for a toon for when he hits 60, not when he's 65 (that I can do later). But if I ought to replace them at 61 regardless if they're second age or third age then there's not much point.

    Confused again. Oh well.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

I used lvl 60 sa's from 60-65 and had no issues with being underpowered and the bow hit lvl 60 just before I replaced it with a 65. My deal was not being bothered with changing weapons every few levels and yeah there arent any barters except in mirkwood for 60+ li's so its realy worth it in my opinion. As far as advancing it I had filled my slots with bows and timed their advance to lvl 30 to coincide with reaching 60 it worked nicely my 60 sa was lvl 40+ after getting it and it had the legs I wanted as well.

Thanks - I was hoping to do something like this. I get not using your starter legendaries from late 40-something to 65, because the DPS is horrible and you'd really be gimping yourself. But the idea of switching two weapons every level from 51 to 65 is a bit daunting.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

When Mines of Moria came out, level 60 was the cap. The level 60 2nd ages were the ultimate in weaponry for most people. Once the Mirkwood expansion hit and the level cap went to 65, everybody switched to level 65 2nd ages.

IMHO - There is no valid reason for making a level 60 2nd age. Keep using 3rd ages until you reach 65. Equip the two level 65 2nd ages that you have in your vault. These days the components for a level 65 second age can be acquired in solo play. You should be able to acquire the Symbols before 65 if you put some effort into the acquisition. If you already got a level 65 character, one hour one night doing one run each of Library and School and Tham Mirdan will give you two Superior Third marks (one required per symbol) which is the most difficult currency to barter for a symbol.

There a couple people in my kin that made a pair of level 60 2nd ages. They equipped them at 60. They are planning to use them until they can equip their level 65, 2nd ages.

The choice is yours. I did not like the use the 60 second age to 65. The content is so easy. It is no doubt viable using a 60 2nd age for five levels.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

Ill add one thing. The weapon you equip at 60: if it is 3rd age, it will get 2x the levelling speed once it pass lvl 30 (2nds age takes 2x the ixp pr lvl) and that means you can decon it for a bigger ixp rune than a slowlevelling 2nd ager. Only level on LI decide what size on the ixp rune you get out of it in the end, so the first agers with 3667k ixp in them cant give more than 938k ixp back, same as a maxlvl 3rd ager.

Turbine changed this functionality again. The size of the pill depends on the amount of XP in the item. There is that roll for the percent extraction which can give you a really small pill. Several forum posters claim to have gotten pills in the 1.6 million range out of a second age.

    Re: Crafting Legendary Weapons

It sounds like flip a coin at this stage in the game - especially with level 75 coming up soon. Though my woodworker's always got cooldowns going because a lot of people really want level 60 SA's.

Speaking of which, is it even worth it for level 50-something-ish-to-60 chararacters to worry about legacy extractions, etc, given they'll have 20 levels to go to cap soon?

Sorry for all the questions, but the forum search is borked at best and with all the updates to legendaries, a lot of web info (all I've found so far) is woefully out-of-date.

Is it worth extracting scrolls in the 50's levels to put together a level 60 LI? If it's someone's first time through those levels then I'm inclined to think it's worth it to get some first hand experience with that aspect of LI's (extracting legacies from one LI and applying them to another LI), but I wouldn't suggest someone try to put together a "perfect" level 60 LI. A level 60 LI will be ready for replacement faster than it can be maxed out, so I don't see a strong reason to go out of the way to assemble an uber level 60 LI.

As for whether or not it's even worth bothering with level 60 second age LI's at all, if you don't have easy/cheap access to the materials needed to make them then I'd say stick wth third age LI's. The difference isn't large enough to make a special effort to get a level 60 second age LI in my opinion. On the other hand if you have LI crafting materials you can spare then why not. I have a toon in the high 50's at the moment and I will make him a set of level 60 second age LI's when he's ready for them, but I have pleanty of materials to spare and have all the appropriate crafts covered so there's no special effort or cost to me to do it, just a few minutes of game time to make them.

I also have three level 65 toons and don't have all of them fully kitted out with 65 second age LI's either. They are nice to have but they are not neccesary.
