freezing problems after buying new graphics card

    Hello,

I recently bought a new videocard AMD Radeon HD6970. (first i had the hd 4850) Able to use directx11 now too and looks great!

Problem is that random freezes occur now. Never had problems with it. Hope someone can help me out?

    Thanks in advance!

The first question that comes to mind is: did you completely remove the old driver before removing the old card? I have heard of some odd issues ingame from an AMD driver when not done as a fresh install.

Hi and thnx for your reply!

I didn't do that. I had to uninstall Catalyst first to remove those old drivers?

I don't have any problems with other games btw.

What would be best to do? no idea how to remove those old drivers now .

Just a suggestion - the new GPU requires, at minumum, 100W larger power supply then the old one...and LOTRO is known to really drive the GPU. If its the whole system freezing up, you might be running into power problems if you have less then a 550W PSU.

Even if you have a 550W, if its a couple years old, it's almost certainly not generating 550 watts.

How many watts is your power supply? According to the AMD web site, the HD6970 requires a 550 Watt or greater power supply with one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® power connector and one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended.

Also, do you have adequate cooling in your case? The 6970 is going to put out more heat than the 4850.

Marginal power or overheating can cause the symptoms you described.

I was having problems with random crashes that were overheating related, and fixed it by turned on the vertical sync option. Before that the graphics card was generating around 130fps and just working too hard.

Hi everyone and thnx alot for all your replies!

At the moment at work, but I'm gonna try some of you r suggestions when at home.

My power supply is 650W so that will be ok. But i hear a lot of noise from the PC when I'm playing Lotro. Guess the cooler is pretty busy.

I'll try the vertical sync and AMd old driver deinstaller first. Hope that will help and i don't have to buy a new cooler :S

Again thank you very much for all your suggestions. I'll keep you informed if it will work

I recently moved to a 6870 (planning CrossFire) from a 4870 and found the card ran REALLY hot until I did a full uninstall of the drivers and deleted all the ATI entries in the registry and then reinstalled the Catalyst drivers.

Might be. Don't rule out marginal power unless its a pretty new PSU. Remember, the max output on them degrades over time. It might have been 650 when you bought it...but after a few years it could be less then 550...

That said, if you're hearing the fans work more, etc, you're probably looking at heat.

Also, what brand of card did you get? Perhaps there is a known issue with the fan not operating well? I know my wife had an Asus 4870 that the fan was junk at best and it died 2x (once replaced under warranty) in the space of 1 month. I used a HIS 4870 with no issues at all.

I am currently running XFX 6870s in both of our machines with DX11 and they never really heat up much at all, and they are the turbine style fans like I had on my HIS 4870, where she had a single fan design on her Asus.

if you have a 32 bit operating system it will run out of memory at high settings. there is a workaround - used to be posted in technical issues part of the forum under display as I recall. it was a one time command line switch to limit the memory allocated to the operating system.

You might want check the Driver settings (AI overdrive, performance or whatever): somewhere is a setting for the fan control, and it could be either stuck at a certain percentage, or otherwise set wrong, so the automatic doesnt work.
To check if heat is your problem, you could set the fan to manual and 100% (resulting in loads of extra decibels) to see if you get freezes even then, when cooling is at is max.

Re: freezing problems after buying new graphics card

Hi and thnx again for all your replies!

I have uninstalled my old drivers (my computer started doing stranger by the minute) and installed the new drivers again. No noise coming from my computer anymore and no lock ups for a few hours. I have good hopes

As i said i got into stranger problems yesterday. When i started my computer for the first time i got a blue screen and Windows wouldn't shut down anymore. When playing lotro the screen suddenly stood still and only a cursor to move and i had to use ctrl+alt+del.

    But hopefully it's solved now!

Thnx again for your great advice in helping a noob get his lotro back :P

If i run into troubles (hopefully not) I'll let you know

I do this once a week:

Hook up your air compressor, get a tool that connects to the hose and concentrates air in a small spot and blow out all your fans.

That is probably the /3GB switch I applied in the boot.ini, you´re talking about. And as of the newest 11.7 drivers it doesn´t work anymore.

The system really start to behave oddly right from the boot with that on. Didn´t even try running a game.

Gratz to the OP for solving that problem and learning how to properly update Radeon drivers. Though they really are hit and miss. If you find one that works without problems, STAY with it!
