Thanks so much! I have been working on a zelda-theme (yes yes, I know), but I'm really not so great. Now that I have something to compare mine to, I can learn more gooder =D One note- I'd stick "Translated by Earacorn" or something in the composer field. It's what I'm putting in my .abc's

Also, san-br, could you possibly shorten the quote by removing the songs or part of them? You add a huge amount of scroll to the page. The reason they don't work is because when they were posted, we had no way of knowing just what the system would allow. They are a useful tool for people to learn the system though- I picked up on how things work trying to get the Wales Anthem to work.

Yeah, these were originally posted long before the game had any ABC support.

On the other hand, they could all be converted to work. Some would be simple (removing chords, repeated phrases), some more complex (the milti-voice melodies). All could be arranged for LotRO, if anyone was so inclined.

    Erm...
It looks like you're doing that in the key of D, but with K:G in the body, you're missing the C#. Right?

Shouldn't the note-body be (please correct me as I'm at work and can't test this for certain, and I still haven't tried the LotRO ABC yet):
    d2 GA Bc|d2 G2 G2|e2 cd ef|g2 G2 G2|
    c2 dc BA|B2 cB AG|F2 GA BG|A6|
    d2 GA Bc|d2 G2 G2|e2 cd ef|g2 G2 G2|
    c2 dc BA|B2 cB AG|A2 BA GF|G6|
    b2 ga bg|a2 de fd|g2 ef gd|^c2 Bc A2|
    AB ^cd ef|g2 f2 e2|f2 A2 ^c2|d6|
    d2 GF G2|e2 GF G2|d2 c2 B2|AG FG A2|
    DE FG AB|c2 B2 A2|Bd G2 F2|G6|]

I left out the repeats. They would happen after the two G6 with the second one going back to just after the first G6. You could copy the first four lines over and the last four lines over (leaving the ] until the end). The A6 is sometime played like that, other times written and played as a grace note (ABC 1.6 "{B}A6") or as two notes (LotRO ABC "B2 A4")

(I see you put a whole rest at the beginning of your MIDI files, too. It annoys me when people don't set/reset their MIDI during rests [using an extra channel if really necessary] nor give enough allowance for SMPTE to do its magic syncronizing [both mistakes possibly "stumbling" the music].)

Dang. I was going to use this time to fix one of my previous posts for LotRO ABC. Maybe tomorrow...

Dang! I'm impressed. You, sir, are exactly correct.

Originally it was in D, but something about Minuet in G being in D bothered me. I thought that just changing the Key tag would adjust the notes accordingly, but trying it in-game showed otherwise. It sounded off. I left it as is to see if anyone would notice.

    Re: ABC Songbook

One of the 'basics' of ABC Notation is to change keys (K: ) or speed (Q: ) in the middle of a song. I have spent awhile trying to find a way for the Lotro system to accept change. Does anyone that has been testing the system on the test server found a way to do this?

From what I understand from the Notation is you just have to put K: or Q: on a new line. I have even tried copying the text (except the X: ) and it won't change. Has Turbine made a list anywhere of what commands/notations their system can use?

    Things that don't work:
' after a note:higher octave than game allows
,, after a note: lower octave than the game allows
    - extended note length which is longer than the game allows
more than one space, picky system
cords: not allowed, I think it is notes between [ ]

Notes of the allowed 3 octaves, I think the sharps and flats are ^ and ~:

    c,d,e,f,g,a,b, CDEFGAB cdefgab

Hope this helps a few and anyone with more tips would be nice to hear from you.

I use AbcNavigator for editing and it is Free! Mid2Abc will convert midi to abc and is also Free.

    Re: ABC Songbook

Pretty on much on the mark, Giddily.

C,D,E,F,G,A,B,CDEFGABcdefgabc' is what they've given us, with accidentals across the 3 octaves.

They designate C, as C2, but it isn't what midi sees as C2. That's ok, since the LOW NOTE that is played depends on the instrument. I submitted a post to thebrasse.com showing the notes across all instruments, but the fact is, you just have to accept LOTRO mapping.

If you have a midi keyboard, use Nolaquen's MIDI2KEY to allow you to play your kbd in the game.

As far as ABC notation, the devs said they were implementing a toned-down version of the ABC implementaion. Chords aren't supported. I don't think they are allowing much more than the x2 or x/2 (and 3, 4, 6, 8) note lengths.

You've probably learned all this by experimentation, but I thought I'd let you know many of us have experimented as well and found the shortcomings of the DEV's ABC implementation.

Personally, I had created solo-note versions for all the parts of "And I Love Her" and other Beatles songs. (With a rhythm-guitar part that could be played on the lute.) I was hoping 3-6 of us could "group" and then the leader could start the song, synched.

The devs had a simpler implementation in mind.

What I call the "shortcomings" of the developers' implementation is still head and shoulders beyond anything else I've seen.

    be well

Good points, but let's please put discussion of ABC in http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=63866

and leave this thread for song postings, just to keep things cleaner.

    chigger_bite,
I took your idea and ran with it. This sounds best on a lute and also after you have pressed all c-scale keys (as it delays when caching the notes for the first time or you can play it once to yourself and then play it again after all the notes are cached). (There're no meter and no measure bars. Sorry. Adding the 16th notes pretty much threw out any reasonable meter.)

It's interesting to me that as I was working on the song, it started raining in-game (storming actually)... quite appropriately (if one has seen the movie, Life of Brian).

Try it and see if it rains on you, too.

This has been moved up here to consolidate my ABC posts ITT.

BTW, if you want to play it outside of LotRO, you'll need to put a natural =F on the first F's following the ^F's (or a bar between them). LotRO doesn't keep accidentals implied throughout a measure (meaning you have to mark one for every accidental regardless where it is if it's not part of the key signature), but most external programs seem to rely on the measure bars or further overrides to stop accidentals that aren't in the key signature, or else they remain implied throughout the rest of the piece.

It's worthy to note that some programs will draw that piece really freaky if you only put in two bars after the ^F's.

As I used LotRO to write it (and apologies go to any stealthed burglars in the area who had to listen to it over and over again), I didn't know that it sounded funny outside of LotRO.

Is there some "official" list of which bits of ABC notation are not supported? (Or which ones are, if that's shorter...).

    Re: ABC Songbook

Here is a Paganini, forget which, but it is long and I believe complete. I also lowered the speed so I could hear all the notes. It was 1/4=118 and does well at that. There are a couple of places to fix as the game plays something different, I think. This will probably be my afk> fix dinner as it still is playing when I have returned =P. I thought of adding a B, at the end as it sounds unfinished, although the way it is matches I think it would sound more complete with one more note.

    X: 1
    T: Paganini
    Z:Giddily
    M: 4/4
    L: 1/8
    Q:1/4=100
    K:Bb
