    Re: Two-word Tolkien Trivia

You must remember, this is Reddhawk we are talking about. The answer will be found in some footnote in the appendices, no matter his protestations about this offering being easier than the last.

Friday the 1st in the Shire.

I know I am right because the footnote actually refers to flying pigs (RotK page 387). However, I only got it because I just happened to be reading that particular passage only 3 days ago. Therefore, subject to confirmation by Reddhawk that I am correct, I cede my right to ask the next question to either Cutholen or Sylux, whose answers were much more clever than mine.

Sylux, if Vilnas is correct, it's your move. (Still holding out hope that I am correct, though.)

Both very creative answers, but as I stated, this riddle was intended to be easier and therefore more straightforward than my last.

Right on both counts! And not only do I tend to pull from obscure references like the appendices, I also tend to focus an inordinate amount of attention on all things hobbit-related. Of course, now that I've said that, I'm going to have to mix things up a bit.

Anyways, here is the reference upon which my riddle is based:
It will be noted if one glances at a Shire Calendar, that the only weekday on which no month began was Friday. It thus became a jesting idiom in the Shire to speak of 'on Friday the first' when referring to a day that did not exist, or to a day on which very unlikely events such as the flying of pigs or (in the Shire) the walking of trees might occur. In full the expression was 'on Friday the first of Summerfilth'.

If it is indeed ceded to me to create a riddle, then I shall do so... But not until Cutholen and Vilnas doubly confirm it!

(And Reddhawk, just don't pull too much from the Letters or Histories or Unfinished Tales, I have none of them available!)

Please go ahead Sylux. Swine "flew" was much better than my recollection of a footnote.

So I suppose it's up to me to come up with the next riddle. Here goes, hope it isn't too easy (or too hard):

    Towhead Royal

No, it is not Cair Andros.
I'm thinking this one is more difficult and stinky than I had originally thought. I will provide a hint after some more incorrect guesses. For now, though it is only fair (have you noticed my affection for puns?) that I clarify the clue:

    Towhead?? Royal.

Question mark indicates that a word play or other sideways thinking is involved, and two of them means two separate "cheats" on the word could suggest the answer independently.

    Ahh, I have it.

Theoden. He, along with the Rohirrim, were called the Strawheads by the Dunlandings.

    From Urban Dictionary :

Towhead. A person with very light (almost white) blond hair, "tow" being flax or hemp fibers.

    Towhead = strawhead?

Or, if you want to go way further back in time, Hador (of the House of Hador) and his people were also called the Strawheads by the Easterlings.

    Re: Two-word Tolkien Trivia

Great job tracking down the "stawhead" reference. It's almost a perfect match for the clue. I thought there would be more "Theoden" guesses, and unfortunately there is no reason for it to be wrong other than that it isn't the answer, it's too obvious; there's multi-layered word-play involved here. So it's not Theoden or any of the kings of Rohan.

So I was going to provide a clue after several more wrong guesses, but the interest has been very low (yea, I'll blame the update, not my bad clue hehe) so I'll provide one now:

After his ilk, the hair on this king's head was most certainly not blond. Yet...

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those that gets rotten tomatoes thrown at me.

Ok so the "towhead royal" clue is still unanswered. While you're thinking about (or ignoring) that one, here's another* one:

    swift swine.

*This clue is totally unrelated to the "towhead royal" one and has a completely different answer.

For the towhead royal, an idea for me would be Cirdan of the grey havens? While his hair wasn't blonde, it could be the same colour of of the sandbar in the gulf of Lhun. Plus he could be considered royalty, since from as far back as before Morgoth's return to middle earth he was lord of the havens, both in Beleriand and Eriador.
