You are correct - not Eowyn. While straightforward it isn't quite that straightforward. In any event, I do not feel that Eowyn is a particularly good fit for the "barbarian" reference.

Not Aerin either. While I think we might get away with calling Brodda a "barbarian," Aerin was a kinswoman of Hurin, and thus in my mind not properly a barbarian either.

If by princess you mean someone unmarried then Haleth I believe. Her people had the least contact with the eldar and she was their leader. Oh didn't see your post, then Haleth is no barbarian either.

    Re: Two-word Tolkien Trivia

Agreed, I don't see Haleth or Aerin as a barbarian, although from their perspective Brodda probably would have been.

Vidumavi, daughter of Vidugavia, King of Rhovanian, and hence undoubtedly both a barbarian and a princess. Wife of Valacar, crown prince of Gondor, so that she was princess twice over, before becoming queen of Gondor when Valacar ascended to the throne.

    Re: Two-word Tolkien Trivia

You are correct sir. The references may be found in the appendices to RotK, in the section that discusses the line of the Gondorian kings. I should also add that this marriage led directly to the Kinstrife disaster in Gondor, as a significant segment of the nobility rejected the marriage of Valacar to someone of "lesser and alien race." They feared the dilution of the Numenorean bloodline would weaken the kingship and lead to shortened lifespans.

That is a very good response, but unfortunately not correct.

Correct! Obviously I'm going to have to think harder next time, to keep you all puzzled. However, it is your turn to stump us all.

I was going for a smaller stone . It seems my riddle has more than one answer. I had the Arkenstone in mind. since it was used by Bilbo to try to stop the elves and dwarves from battle. But looking back the Stone of Erech seems to fit as a ransom stone as well. Sorry for the amibigious riddle.

Elenluin, its probably best not to give the answer away in the response to the first guess

Vilnas, I'm guessing it's your turn.

To the contrary, I believe your previous answer was accepted as sufficient. I have to say I didn't read the balance of the thread before responding with the Arkenstone and didn't see that Elenluin had already given the correct response - I would not have given my answer otherwise.

I propose that Elenluin retain the mantle and ask another riddle.

The closest thing I can think of is Orthanc, tower of Isengard, which sticks out like a needle and means "cunning mind" in Rohirric.

Correct. That was exactly how I remember it. I'll have to read up on the trilogy again if I have to make another riddle though. Looking forward to your riddle.

Correct. Lammoth, where Morgoth's screams of terror upon being attacked by Ungoliant when he refused to give up the Silmarils to her hunger still echo.

    Your turn, Vilnas.

    Re: Two-word Tolkien Trivia

    Here is the next riddle:

    Homeless King?

I am once again adopting the crossword "rules", meaning that the presence of the question mark is an essential element of the clue. For those of you not familiar with crossword puzzles, the use of the question mark indicates that there is some doubt about the answer, or that the answer is a little wonky or a fudge is being used.

For present purposes, one thing that means is that the "correct" answer does not refer to a king-in-exile, such as Arvedui, as there is no uncertainty concerning the suitability of the answer to the question. Hopefully once the correct answer is revealed you will agree with me on how these guidelines work for this riddle.
