    DPS Math Help Please?

I have been using a L65 3A bow for quite a while now. It has the following legacies:

    Induction Bow Crit
    Focus Bow Crit
    Barbed Arrow Bleed Damage
    Ranged Evade Rating
    Endurance Quick Shot Threat Down

I recently acquired a L65 2A Bow (now level 34) with the following legacies:

    Focus Bow Crit
    Focus Bow Power Cost
    Induction Bow Power Cost
    Focus Bow Threat Down
    Induction Bow Threat Down
    Ranged Skill Evade Chance Modifier
    Quick Shot Critical Rating

I have read many threads about hunter legacies, and the consensus seems to be that while having both crit multiplier legacies is desirable, it only increases damage output by approximately 2%.

My question is this: Will the increased DPS on the 2A bow make up for only having one of the crit multipliers on the bow?

According to my calculations, the increased DPS is just short of 4%.

Other than missing induction bow crit, I really like the bow. Truthfully, I could use the IXP I would get out of the 3A to advance the 2A.

I know there are several of you on this forum who would have valuable opinions, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks much.

    Re: DPS Math Help Please?

I am curious about this as well.

I was going to settle it just using parces, but if someone else has an explanation it would be great.

I currently have a 3A with Focus/Induction Crit, BaB and MC CD; and I'm trying to compare it to a 2A with Focus/Induction crit but no BaB or MC CD.

I assume this is partially dependent on ones play style (Precision Focus Build vs Strength stance build), but it would be an interesting discussion.

    Hypothetically though ...

the extra DPS from a crit multiplier leg would be (Multiplier)*(Crit Percentage)*(DPS Contribution Percentage)

Where the DPS contribution percentage is what percent of you DPS comes from that skill type, for example does (with no crit legs) say 60% of your DPS come from Induction skills. This part I assume you have to parce based on your typical skill rotation.

The raw DPS increase of the second age is around 5% IIRC. I dont think any single hunter legacy can give you that much DPS boost. If you were missing all 3 (both crits and bleed) then maybe.

Gut reaction- Second Age will do more DPS.

Qualms- I am less concerned about the missing crit chance legacy and more concerned about the missing Barbed Arrow Bleed damage Legacy. Consistently applied, the Barbed Arrow Bleed is a significant amount of damage.

Mitigating Factor- You have some reduced power costs on the second age, that may allow you to be a bit more aggressive than you normally would.

I still think that the SA will come out ahead, but really the best thing you could do is log a few fights and parse the combat logs. The Second Age should deliver in shorter fights at the very least... I believe the Third Age will merely be competitive in longer fights, if not outright blown away.

You have focus crit which should do more damage than induction crit anyway.

I would go with the 2nd age.

I'd say that the best thing you could do is pull a Hat and say "**** it, I have a 2nd Age that doesn't blow goats. I'm done." Everybody will just see the teal and think it's awesome anyways.

Ahh the old OMG ITS TEAL! issue.

I still see people roll on gear that is teal that they dont actually use because the brain sees TEAL and they think GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!

Just like a Mezz from a LM on an enemy away from the group and a Hunter Pew Pewing it. Tsk tsk tsk.

Or like my girlfriend did... churn through third age bows until she got a all the damage legacies and called it at that. It'll out damage a second age with bad legacies.

Like most have said, having the crit multipliers as a requisite for a good bow is a little over-blown. The reduced power cost is SWEET; i think you'll notice that more than anything else. That will allow you to squeeze in MS or PS more often at the end of fights.

    Re: DPS Math Help Please?

honestly for me at this point if I can get a bow like this:

    Focus Bow Crit Multiplier
    Induction Bow Crit Multiplier
    Focus Bow Power Cost Reduction
    Induction Bow Power Cost Reduction
    Barbed Arrow Bleed Damage Increase

Id be happy as a clam. With the added legacy of Quick Shot Slow Increase since I like that 50% reduction even if a continual 40% is sexy in all by itself.

I like the Power Reduction Legacies over other things most of the time but I do like the Crit bonus damage. Its nice to see a 700+ Crit on Quick Shot

which is what I'm doing w/ 1 of my LI slots, since I have a 3rd Verdant Glen. I wanted one w/ both powers as more raid-oriented option than my second age (which is arguably best for MS, focus crits, and perma-50% slow from in-front w/ -block). I got one w/ both powers and a -evade. the others were -threats and lolcrud, which became AGI, FATE, and VIT. It'll do until they fix the system.

I can swap before MS, too.

    Re: DPS Math Help Please?

    OP here.

I made my decision; I deconned the 3A, got over 800,000 ixp, went on an SG HM run, ran a couple of skirmishes and maxed out the 2A bow to 70. All of the legacies are tier 4 except for focus bow threat down which is a tier 3.

Seeing that I have more Scrolls of Renewal than I know what to do with, I figured I would change my point assignments based on whether I was soloing or grouping. If soloing, there is no need for threat reduction, etc.

I consider us at a unique moment in the game. I was very hesitant to buy a 2A because I never knew when it would have to be deconned. It appears from what we have heard over the last week or two that we have six months (approximately) until the system changes. This bow is going to be of more use to me than the fake money I spent on it would have been during that time period.

    Thanks for the input everybody.

Did I mention it was TEAL?

Hey, if there are people that will spend $500 on a pair of teal shoes IRL, then I guess there is no reason not to spend 80 gold on a teal bow in a video game.

    Re: DPS Math Help Please?

If you're interested in some old math-fu on the crit legs, here's that. Personally, I'm w/ Saint.. Barbed Arrow Bleed is the closest we have to a "must-have" legacy. If you had done some parsing and the 3rd Age had come out ahead, I think it would have been due to that, not the missing induction crit leg.
