So then you'll want to keep rerolling a character on one of the other servers over and over again for the first tier point reward. We don't know how they are going to award free points yet, but say they give us 25 points every 10 levels. It will probably be much quicker to go from level 1-10 than 10-20, or 20-30 for example. So you'd roll a character, get him to level 10, delete him and start over. And over, and over.
If there's a way to do it on one character, I will avoid this. If not, I'll do 1 - 50, unlock what I can and see what I want to do from there.

Re: The Level 1-50 FTP Challenge

Gratz in advance on completing all of your deeds as you level

Sounds cool, just a few observations off of other comments:

The terminology I have heard used leads me to believe that you will be able to play out the CD and URU instances and get your class quest items without spending any points. What you will NOT be able to do is free the prisoners in the hut or rescue the old lady, etc. while inside the instance. Killing Helch and taking his slime is not associated with a quest.

There are high level mobs in all 3 starter instances AND they have associated quests. Haud Icareth, Sarnur, Svalfang, and the shire quests near the evendim border. This should provide a little relief on those mid levels.

Also remember that completing each deed (including class skill deeds) grants a level appropriate experience bonus just like it is a quest. (That is alot of quests if grinding them out at or near level).

The only down side I see is that there will be no rest XP or destiny points to buy it. Still, I think you will enjoy this and wish you fun on your journey. I think, in some ways, you are actually forcing your character to play the original SoA and you have the opportunity to slowly build a powerful character with lots of faction rep, deeds completed, items found, and no time was spent racing to get on to the next new thing. By the time you hit 50, I'm suspecting you will have the point to obtain Moria for free given the in game progression you will have made Good luck.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of it that way, but yeah. If faction rep is available, that's also a bonus. grinding the deeds in order on level will take a little organization and patience. I'll make paper lists and check them off as I go.

Re: The Level 1-50 FTP Challenge

Great idea, and one I can see myself joining in as well (as I already have a bad case of altitits).

My thoughts would be rolling a warden as they, to me, have the best mix of dps and surviveablity, and having him an explorer to make his own armour, and survive off mob drops for weapons, shields. I thought about RK, but the combination of being squishy and probably never finding good mob drops of runestones would limit his dps and thus leveling speed while grinding.

For sure though, on level zone deed kills FTW! I am a fan of skirmishes though, so do see myself spending some time there, particularly if some of those skirmish rewards become worthwhile with this playstyle.

Cool. When it gets closer, we'll pick a server and maybe start the first FTP kin.

I'll tell you what... if they tie Turbine Points to Skirmish rewards, my stance on skirmishes will become a lot more favorable.

I love the idea, one thing to note you will not have access to the RuneKeeper or Warden as a F2P player. Also F2P has been reported as not able to create kinships, but they are allowed to be in one. So the kin would have to be created by a non-F2P person if your still set on doing that.

I wish you luck in your experiment, and look forward to updates!

In DDO, you don't have to roll characters on each server, it's just the most (or a very) efficient way to grind points. You should be able to continue to earn points on one toon.

Good point, one of many I am sure that will pop up between now and the implementation. Will keep it interesting.

Leaning towards Champ I guess, though overpower guards can grind with the best of them too

What a great endeavor and great idea this is! I don't play much these days, or I'd love to join you. If you don't mind someone joining you just occasionally to give moral support and supply bad jokes, I'll create an F2P account myself and join your kinship--if you'll have me, of course. Since I'll be F2P, naturally I'll be a griefer who will steal your ore nodes.

As soon as Sept comes, I'll pick the server and post it. Feel free to suggest servers, Qualifications include:

    Medium to high population.
Familiarity to one or all of the F2P 1-50 crew.

I'm leaning towards Bwine or Landroval. I can grab groups on Bwine easy. Landroval I could RP a gimp build, and maybe get a sympathy group. Plus the Kin would make sense there. We could theme it as non heroic, normal free people fighting for Middle Earth.

But.... as a F2P player on Brandywine or Landroval you could be waiting in queue to play much longer than a smaller population server.

Good point. Ooooh. Maybe one of the new servers? Think of it. There will be very few paying players on those at the start. It'd level the playing field and probably have a shorter queue.

But it's not like I ain't got things to do while waiting in the queue anyways. I have another computer and could be loggin in on my pay pay pay account. Once the f2p account is up... I go there.

The more I puzzle this out, the more cool I think the idea is...

Champion repair bills should be a lot less than guardian repair bills, in my (limited) experience.

Something that I haven't seen mentioned, is "how" Turbine Points are awarded. Over in DDO, you have a "Total Reputation" bar that tracks how much rep you've earned for all quests. When you reach certian milestones, like 50 favor, then 100 favor, then each 100 favor after, you receive some free Turbine Points.

I'm interested to know if they are going to just tie it in with leveling, or if they are going to tie it in with Deeds, Reputation and other milestones.

It hasn't been mentioned because we don't know yet - Turbine has released no info other than "You can earn TP by playing". I am guessing that the Beta period will nail down exactly how you get them & how much you get for in game earning.

To be honest, I don't really see that there's any challenge in this. Oh, sure, there's a short gap between 23-30, but those aren't particularly long levels, and you have deeds and the epic quest to do. Once you hit 30, skirmishes and done.

Unfortunately, we'll never see the data, but it's much harder to do this in DDO - so much so that the fact that you don't need to buy content in LOTRO might significantly affect the bottom line of F2P. On the other hand, LOTRO has the huge advantage of the lore going for it, but Turbine made the Epic questline free, so... They might not actually see too much revenue (other than for fluff) before Moria. Moria will probably be a big win for them.

I have four L65 toons on Silverlode, with an SM crafter in everything other than cooking. So, if we wanted to "cheat" we, er, never mind. Better choose a different server.

I'm just kidding, of course, but it raises a question nonetheless. From whom and what kind of assistance would it be ok to accept for this endeavor? Based on my past experience (especially when my friend got her account hacked and everything stolen), there are so many kind and generous people who play this game that I think we would get all kinds of offers of assistance (both for questing and crafting) no matter which server you choose.

Do you have any guidelines for that kind of thing? Is it ok to accept the generosity of the community at large, or did you have the thought that we'd try to get as far as we could using the limited resources of only the players within the F2P kinship?

Re: The Level 1-50 FTP Challenge

This is a great thread - me and my hubby thought we might try this type of thing if we got into beta. But we were going to do Runkeepers until someone pointed out they aren't free to play.

One thing to remember is lots of the book quests offer great rewards and are all soloeable at some point (just took a new character through book 2 solo, some of that series of quests is majorly hard at level).

Thinking about all the gear out there and the limit on traits - I'm wondering if a Minstrel/Tinker isn't the best choice, with the added bonus that you can probably get into groups in the 1-50 range where traits don't really matter much. If you only get 1 race trait choice, 2 virtues, and 2 class trait choices the jewelry from being a tinker would be a big bonanza for stats.

Thought about Captain because that's my main, but captain has problems because so much depends on pet/banner/trait choices. With only two options in class traits and with their pets effectiveness based on tailor, armor on metalsmith, jewelry on tinker, and weaponsmith for dps it would be hard to be self sufficient.

Guardian metalsmith might work but again will have to investigate the class traits. One thing this has forced me to do is realize I rely a lot on class traits.

I can confirm that working virtue traits while levelling is a huge xp boost - did that on my new char I took up to level 35 or so a few months ago to try the new Lonelands etc stuff. Will also be interesting to see what qualifies as book quests in LL now since a lot of it is tied to Eglain faction, which you need certain quests to get enough rep to finish the book quests.

At least it's something new to think about while we wait for the new content

Champion, Captain, Rune-Keeper and Warden seem the most logical.

I want a simple model to base the 1-50 strategy on.
Remember, Warden and RK are premium classes so you couldn't play one in this F2P challenge.....
