Time to Rally our forces

Long time hunter vets, those of you staying atleast, its time to rally the troops and start producing more guides and pooling information about this class, with Free to Play going live this fall, we are going to have a TON of new recruits, so in the name of keeping the hunter class a well informed bunch, lets get busy over the next few months! Im gonna work on this as well what do ya think?

Edit to add:

You know, it might not be a bad idea for Turbine to rework the current sticky system. Either they need someone who's job is keeping the <Class> Resources sticky up-to-date, or we need some way to edit it ourselves.

agreed

or, we can just put everything together in the Lorebook, and when the noobs come along, we have somewhere to point them

I'd help, but it seems pointless since I don't actually play anymore. My lifetime account at least gives me free access to the Hunter forums, though.

Re: Time to Rally our forces

Just think of it this way, the better we make the guides the more we can get nerfed! I mean, we know that most of the F2P people are going to be Hunters anyways, gotta be Legolas and all...

Since they nerf classes based on population it seems..... well 1+1 = 2 and all.

Here is my guide to them.

1. Roll a different class. If you roll a hunter you will regret it at end game since all Turbine does is nerf hunters.
2. Even though you are a primary DPS class you will be 3rd or 4th best in end game raids.
3. Start a taxi service since that is all we are good for.
4. Did I mention roll another class.

Keep in mind this comes from someone whose main was a hunter for over 3 years. I finally got discouraged enough and rolled a different class and have never looked back.

Re: Time to Rally our forces

Yeeah, I do think they need to up the dps a little, since a well traited rk can blast its way through a hunter. All we are is DPS for the most part. So we get looked over for the classes that are dps/CC/heals like the rk. They gave us basically 1 task with a bit of CC so we can live. Not to mention our heartseeker damage is broken and horrible...RK's EC is much much much greater than our heartseeker. I definitely don't think hunters are the top dps in this game at all anymore. Here is my solution for Heartseeker:

Updates:
Increase damage so it is actually a good level 65 skill. I can top heartseeker damage with ISB, in fact, when I burn hot, I never use heartseeker..a waste of 4-5 seconds of damage. Having it do around 1700-2000 base damage is a JOKE, thats a pin prink to most creatures.
Reduce cooldown town to 1-2 minutes to match the cool down of skills like EC
Get rid of the 4-5 seconds induction, and instead have it cost 9 focus (like EC costs atunement).

That way the skill will actually be worth using. As of now, I only RARELY use heartseeker...it is a waste of time and dps. Having 2000 damage base for a 4-5 second induction kills our dps when you can do double that damage doing ISB + MS + BA + .. all in the same time.

I think turbine's problem is they got it stuck in their heads during beta that hunters are OP and now it is running an inifite loop so every time they update, they have the same broken record thought of "hunters are OP"..I mean, they even gave us a skill that told us how they think of us "Beneath care" LOL. Hunters are now a 2nd rate class that I think most people raid/fellow with so we can port their bums back at the end, with the cost of our travelling rations!

Re: Time to Rally our forces

I've actually started to plan out a series of starter guides for the classes, starting with Hunter and Minstrel, not planning on doing warden until later, as it won't be available without purchasing access to the class. (those are my 3 level cap toons). From there, I plan on doing the Captain , Loremaster, Burg and finally champ and Guard (the two classes I've never played).

Essentially, what I plan to do is play each class up to level 20, take screenshots along the way and explain why I make the decisions I do. Skill rotations, quickslot layouts, options, a little of everything. I'd like to keep each a reasonable length, but dense enough to be useful.

With no new content for the next X months, I need a project. My first project will be the hunter. I'll be starting in the next couple weeks, and once I've done the legwork, I'll come back here for input into the guide. It will need some more tweaking once we know exactly what restrictions there are for the F2P players.

I'm working on a title for the series.

Re: Time to Rally our forces

Perhaps I'm not jaded, as my hunter isn't my main..

Either way, for a F2P player, Hunter will be the only choice for ranged DPS.

You have to pay for access to the rk, or have purchased the MoM expansion.

Re: Time to Rally our forces

If Turbine wasn't so gung ho to delete all the "old, outdated, useless" posts around here there would be tons of useful info for waves of new players already. It wouldn't take long to update old guides with updated info pertinent to low level Huntering. Not much has changed really at that stage of the game. I'm really not interested in recreating all that again.

Here's a quick and dirty guide for all newbies though.

1) Quest gear generally stinks. Until the later 30s/early 40s there are few exceptions to this rule. If you find yourself dying often it's most likely because you need to update from stinky quest gear. Click here and then look on the Auction House, or make friends with a crafter.
2) Don't over-hunt. That means don't quest where you have to fight mobs way over your level. It's an easy way to get killed.
3) Carry food, potions, and status cure (wounds, fears, etc) potions. They drop from what you kill and show up in chests on the ground. Carry them with you and use them instead of just selling them. They can save your life.
4) Don't waste time crafting on your first character. Make it an explorer, gather everything you see, and sell it to everyone too stubborn to take this advice. Crafting is a black hole until you've mastered a tier, and low level gear isn't a huge money maker. Craft later when you've got a bankroll, save money now when you're a newbie.
5) Pay attention to how mobs behave. How an orc fights at level 12 is pretty much what you will see from every orc, everywhere. Learn what mobs do, and what mobs have different 'classes', and you will be better prepared to dea with them.

That's about all anyone will ever need if they're willing to pay attention and try and figure a few things out for themselves. None of the combat system is really obscured any more, and weapons have all been homogenized, so there's not a lot to say there. "Read the DPS rating", done.

I would absolutely give you feedback on that project and help where I can (in-game or on the forums). In term of title, you could feel free to actually make a series out of the Mostly Unfinished Guide I "started" some time ago (it was a megapost that someone ported over to the Lorebook).
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

I plan on making it a bit more concise and simple. However, in each of the sections (focus, grouping, stats etc), I'd like to link existing resources here on the forums and the lorebook for those who wish a deeper look. I will definitely link that guide in the 'grouping' section.

sounds great Geo, if you need any help let me know. Id like to get a nice, comprehensive guide up on the Lorebook, i recently got a nice link to a guide by Clover on how to edit wiki and get stuff on the lorebook. If you would like me to scan the hunter forums for specific information and put it together id be glad to try and help

A good start for people would be to enter some of the existing guides on the Lore book. Once in the lorebook they're not subject to purge, and more can be done with them. Specifically I'm talking about the very excellent style guide and SoM focus burn posts.

First rule of playing a hunter: draw all the aggro you can from your party.

Yeah, I know, old joke. But I don't think I've ever posted in the hunters thread and I do have a 65 hun****, so here's my post. /port away

Re: Time to Rally our forces

We must make sure they understand our most important skill : Rain of Aggro.

They must learn to use the skill whenever the cooldown is up, especially if there are un-tagged mobs nearby.

Also, whenever things start to get really tough it helps to pull a new group of mobs to the fight so that your Rain of Aggro will be more effective.

Target selection is key. If any mobs appear to be mezzed or rooted, it is the hunters job to select these targets and pull back to the fight.

If for some reason all the mobs are ganged up on the tank, it is best to go SS and burn hot, along with Rain of Aggro to pull mobs off of the tank as everybody knows the ranged tank is the best tank. Don't worry about power usage, your friendly LM will be more that happy to feed you power.

Lastly, if you see mobs peel off and head to the mini, make sure to let them fear the mob first and then shoot it.

I'm sure we'll think of more helpful tips

Edit: To be serious - I think a real hunter tutorial for LOTRO newbies is a good idea. Keep it focused towards players that have no idea about stats, gear, virtues etc.

Re: Time to Rally our forces

working on this now, its really rough at this point. but starting with guides others have posted and editing them for content, and organizing them as best i can

should have it pretty much done in a couple weeks

feel free to check it out over on the Lorebook. Master Hunter: A Guide to playing the Hunter Class

it will take some time to edit, add to, and reorganize. Im using information already posted on these forums and organizing it and compiling it with the new player in mind. will take some time, but im hoping to work on it in the background while at work

As a Hunter, your purpose is to obtain Fleet Stance and then to aspire to Improved Fleet Stance.

Fleet rhymes with 'Leet" so you can see that it has to be a very uber skill that every aspiring Legoalaz is striving for.

This stance enables you to fire your ranged storm of death from multiple boats in Lake Evendim, where the Watcher in the Water's slightly lesser-known cousin, the Espyr of Evendim lurks.

Sounds great! I'll help wherever I can. You get +rep for sure with this plan of action.

Awesome idea! I'll throw info in where I can help. Off work til August, so I definitely have the free time. I'm actually working on two other hunters (hobbit & human) on a couple different servers, so I could see differences & both of them are still pretty low - I think 5 and 10 maybe. Hubby is working on a dwarf hunter that's in his teens. I can use them to refresh my memory of some of the starter info I can't remember from when Amberwyn was that small.
