    Rain of Arrows

Do you ever use it on a solo mob? Or should you only use this when fighting multiple mobs?

    Re: Rain of Arrows

RoA is meant for multiple mobs. Using it on a singular mob is entirely wasted.

However, if you trait for Rain of Thorns (RoT), which is used for Crowed Control (CC), it certainly can be used on singular mobs without being wasted, although it really shines when you are using it on a whole group of mobs.

For instance, when I am facing a powerful Elite or Signature mob, I'll generally lay down a Crafted Trap, a Snare, and then start off with a long-induction attack followed by RoT to root them...giving me two or three chances to keep them at bay while I pew-pew them from afar.

Without turning RoA into RoT, there is no benefit using it on a solitary mob. You are better off spending that Power on SS.

The only time you shouldn't be using RoA every time it's up is if there's a damn good reason not to use AoEs. It's effectively an extra PS every 10 seconds.

Chaining focus attacks is at the very Heart of a focus burn build. PS>RoA>PS is around 1200 damage in about 3 seconds without crits. That's more effective than Heartseeker... it also demonstrates just how broken Heartseeker is currently.

    Re: Rain of Arrows

Its interesting to read the conflicting replies. I suspect all of us are learning something with this thread.

The main reason I posted is because I seem to do an awful lot of damage on a single mob with this skill - not all the time - but often enough to want to keep using it. I feel a little silly using it on a single mob but it just seems to work so well....

I use it all the time, as long as an AoE is appropriate to use in the current situation.

I agree as long as the AoE won't get you mobbed then fire away. I use it on single targets all the time.

A lot of people walk into these forums with different assumptions... I used to not use RoA on single mobs for the longest time... even though I was using a "focus burn" build but with Mirkwood and with how fast focus skills execute and with auto-attacks firing off underneath animations, I find myself trying to stay out of inductions more and more. I still need more fate and to rank up my newer power saving legacies, but I am running at nearly 1100 ICPR with 2400 power and am annihilating my power with ease. It doesn't help that BotR was nerfed three times in the course of a year and power costs increased with Mirkwood... but hey something has to get nerfed... amirite.

It adds to DPS, but it's nasty on power and focus consumption. So, I guess... use where it is appropriate.

    Re: Rain of Arrows

It all comes down to traits. If you have the -1 focus to Rain of Arrows and the Critical Plus Chance and Multiplier traits go with Rain of Arrows. If you have the -1 focus to PS and the -8% migitation go with PS. I personally trait Rain of Arrows Traits and use them while soloing.

I use it all the time to stack DPS when I have enough power.

I use it to stack DPS, solo and grouped...but I try to avoid over using it when there is a need to cc mobs...

    Re: Rain of Arrows

I use it against single mobs if I have enough concentration and the other concentration skills are not through their cooldown.

Keep in mind it is very quick. If the fight is tight and you are seriously threatened you can put out quite a bit of emergency damage. Rain of arrows is not particularly weak against each individual mobs.

    Re: Rain of Arrows

I will use it on a solo mob if my PS is on CD and I need to end the fight quickly. Like the others said, as long as AoE is appropriate, it's a perfectly reasonable way to do some extra burst damage against a single target. In a longer fight that I am not concerned with ending quickly, though, I will save the focus for PS or MS.

I use it on singles. Often. Plus, shooting arrows straight up into the air is the coolest.

RoA isn't wasted on a single mob, it's a 0 induction attack with reasonable damage. The power / focus cost is a consideration, but if you are burning down a single mob and you just want them dead, hit them with everything you have.

RoA doesn't turn into RoT, they are completely separate skills.

Yep ^, also if you PVP I use it to pop out the wargie pack. Track and target one, or lock on one of the visibles and use ROA. You usually can pop out a puppy or two and ruin a good stalk.
