Thread: Solo Pulls

    Solo Pulls

I've leveled a hunter up to 34 before, but deleted him and now am starting him over. I was wondering what skill is best to use as your opening shot for maximum efficiency, assuming you are in strength stance and are about 30m away. Here are my thoughts:

*Quick Shot: Slow the mob down, making it take longer to reach you and giving you time to get more shots in.
*Swift Bow: Open with your strongest attack, and just try burn him down before he reaches you.
*Barbed Arrow: Get the bleed ticking as soon as possible to get the most out of it

Also, I was wondering... should a hunter be able to kill most on-level mobs before they reach you? I never could on my RK if I stood still because of short range, but hunters can shoot from almost twice as far away as RKs can so I wasn't sure about this. I deleted my first hunter a long time ago, but I think I remember having to use a couple melee attacks to finish most mobs off

    Re: Solo Pulls

For me it depends on my level. Once the mobs have enough health that I always cast focus first (upper 40s) then I use QS-PS-SS-RA-PS. Putting the first PS second before SS means the cooldown will be up and I can fire it again just as the mob reaches me. I use RA right after SS because PS isn't quite up yet.

For lower levels, I almost always do QS-SS-PS because with a decent bow, that's often all that's needed to kill a mob before it reaches me. If I'm rapidly killing mobs then I will alternate SS with BA simply because the SS cooldown isn't up.

    Re: Solo Pulls

I haven't been below 50 in at least a 18 months on my hunter, so I can't actually recall my pull method. Though I would wager opening with QS would be best at the lower levels, since this allows you to use more skills without being in melee range of a mob, as well as receive less damage since the mob will have lost more health due to being slowed and you using more uninterrupted skills. SB would be next, and then PS since that has no induction. I never factored in BA skill during SoA, since Turbine never bothered to increase the DoT damage rate as you leveled up until MoM... (it was literally considered useless, and I didn't even have the skill on my toolbar) But I would think either throw it in after PS, or trying doing it before SB. Can't give you too much help with that skill.

Usually hunters should be able to kill regular/swarm mobs before they reach you (at least have them down to about half health) at my level, can't remember how it was at the lower levels. Even at 65 when mobs are at 4k+ health, when I'm in Strength Stance, I can sometimes kill mobs before they touch me due to high crits.

I don't finish them off with melee even if they do get close. If I'm fighting a mob I don't think will die before it reaches me, I save focus for that, use induction skills to pull and while it's running to me, and then nuke with focus skills when it's there.

    Re: Solo Pulls

When I was running in strength I used to go Swift Bow->Quick Shot, assuming I was at maximum range. Closer and used to switch them around, either way you end up with enough focus to pull of Penetrating Shot.

Now further on I run in Precision most of the time for the extra crits and with traits for extra focus. I frequently open with Barbed Arrow->PS-SB.

Certainly before you get Bards or RoT the quick shot slow is a massive help, especially if you are using traps as well.
2 mobs, lay a trap, QS the furthest one, closest one will hit your trap, you can burn down the first without worrying about the second.

It also depends on wether you are up against normals or sigs. Against sigs I believe it is vital to get Barbed off whenever needed, and the QS slow is almost essential to survive. We are way squishy at lower levels.

As far as your three options... it really is all of the above, depending on the range and situation. Short range, I open with quick shot. Two mob pull, I use quick shot on the farthest mob (provided he is not ranged) and burn him down while the other rushes to trappy land. Longer range, I will open with Barbed>PS>(I)SB>PS>QS>PS ect. I tend to open with Swift bow on weaker mobs, where front loading a lot of damage will end them fairly quick.

In terms of killing on level mobs before they touch you... mostly pre 40-ish, but yes. If you are at max range with a good weapon, you should be able to single pull and kill an on level normal before it can touch you most of the time. In the 40's it becomes some of the time, in Moria (because of added morale and harsh terrain) it becomes rare, but once you get back out into the open field, you should be able to kill a single normal with an aggressive shot rotation, before it closes to melee from max range. It won't always be in your best interest to do so.

    Re: Solo Pulls

Swift Bow is likely your best opener. While it doesn't have the snare effect that S:Strength Quick Shot does, it also has a much longer induction. SB > PS > QS will actually allow you to get more ranged skills off before the mob gets to you than QS > PS > SB will. Also, if you're solo (and of a high enough level to use it), replace SB with Heart Seeker whenever it makes sense. The induction on HS pretty much makes it worthless except as an opening shot or a fear breaker.

Also: Never fire back-to-back induction shots if you can help it (Note: It isn't always possible). Always try to alternate Induction > Focus > Induction > Focus.

    Re: Solo Pulls

pretty much, you're only chance at killing something before it reaches you is basicly (assuming full focus before the first arrow is fired): (i)SB>PS>BA>(i)MS, possibly throwing in another QS>PS>QS between BA and MS. just depends on which arrows crit/miss. if you have room to spare (IE don't have to worry about AoE accidently pulling extra mobs) you can toss RoA in there, too.

or in other words, pretty much what CWood said...

I usually just do a little pew, pew pew, then pew pew pew.

I apologize for this useless post, but I'm bored at work.

So a real answer. If I don't focus beforehand, and I'm against an on level mob, I'll usually open with swift bow.

    Re: Solo Pulls

If its a mob that you think is gonna be tough and you have to take seriously, then best thing is lay down trap at mid range, back up to full range and Start with SwiftBow, Barbed Arrow, QS, PS, QS, SB, and another Penshot. then its pretty much alternate to whatever is open. If you want your QS slow on him make sure you QS every time after a barbed arrow, that way you get the -40% not the lil -10%.

I haven't found this to be true. Assuming max range (and S:S obviously), I get more shots off starting with QS than SB..

    4-2-1-5-1-2-3 if needed.

But then again, I'm S:P all the way now.

I'm sorry for not making sense.

4 is Swift Bow. You can probably guess the rest.

I never run in S:S when I'm soloing anymore, but yeah, that's what I used to do. Now I open with BA since I run in S:P. Just need to find a better bow with BA Bleed to make that more effective.

    Re: Solo Pulls

Assuming it's a trash pull, vs a solo target, and I'm focused, I'm usually:

    QS(*) /start/ ISB > PS > BA > ROA > PS > QS > MS (if 50%) >PS > QS > Blind > PS /end/

    MOB -------------------------------> X <- ME

PS cooldown is slightly longer than the QS execution w/ 4 huntsman and fast draw, so I tend to fire off a PS *and* another focus attack to maximize damage in that window before the MOB hits me. (illustrated above). ISB and ROA have a 10sec cooldown, and I like to apply the bleed early.

I always have at least 1 bow w/ QS Slow legacy to apply a 50% slow. This allows me to get more hits in than opening w/ ISB. Why some hunters may experience different results on this ~~~~ Please note my build is for fastest possible ISB and BA inductions... this will not always apply due to build, but is especially @ low levels when not all your slots are available for you to stack 4 huntsman.

MOB usually reaches me by 2nd QS unless it's a pale folk or something zippy.

    @ OP:

You'll be killing most stuff before it hits you until about that level, then it starts to take longer. Legendary skills allow you to fear a MOB and send it running away (Bard's Arrow) or Trap a group of them from @ range (Rain of Thorns). Bards Arrow is awesome.

I use Barbed Arrow agressively now that it works, w/ longest duration possible, and will often switch targets to apply bleeds on multiple targets I'm fighting. It has a low chance of breaking a Bard's Arrow fear, so it's (relatively) safe to permanent apply on a MOB - even one you're ponging w/ Bards Arrow. Some hunters have bad luck w/ this... I don't seem to.
