    Nope.
It may be appropriate at this time, to interject a non-inference note. It is not to be construed, upon any occasion whatsoever that a reply or responce (or, for that matter, a non-reply or non-responce) is indicative of "clue-dropping". Any "clue-dropping" will be preceeded by appropriate preceeding procedures.

Probably not, but is it the general filth and pollution left by a dragon in its lair; eg, Smaugs smoke and stench and filth all over the inside of the Lonely Mountain?

    Hmmm. What can I say?
The answer is within your answer but not as you phrased it.

is there somewhere that Tolkien describes it as pollution? smoke/filth just don't seem like the pollution we know (smog/ozone/chemical) but maybe tolkien had a whole diff perspective i suppose

Now, somewhere in the combination of these 2 posts lies the answer.
You will groan when you get it and I may be forbidden access to this forum in the future.

I'd just like to point out that while these words are certainly very similar, perhaps even intentionally so, they are not pronounced the same.

The au in Smaug has the same sort of sound as the 'ou' in loud.

Thanks Reddhawk. I was aware of that, but I couldn't resist the opportunity for a bad pun.
