One thousand was the number of riders who set out from Edoras for the battle at Helm's Deep.

This may be true (I haven't been able to verify it in the text) but it isn't the answer I am looking for.

Ok how about Menegroth, otherwise known as The Thousand Caves, Thingol's stronghold in Doriath?

Actually his clue was "Thousand", which could mean any number of thousand, maybe even five or ten thousand for all I know. I took it to mean one thousand, but the limitation in this thread to "one-word" trivia makes it hard for the questioner to be that specific.

I think you have it right: 2941 TA to 3001 TA.

Correct, I also would have paid the number of years between Bilbo's first and second journeys to Rivendell

The basic unit of Rohir cavalry was a Eored that was 120 men, which is a pretty useful number so you could have formations of 120 x 1, 60 x 2, 40 x 3, 30 x 4 down to 12 x 10, thus there were 6000 Rohir at Pelenor (50 Eored) and the number mustered for Helms deep is likely to have been 1200 (10 Eored), authors and generals like round numbers.

In other words, yep. I'm pretty well in awe of your riddle-mastery in this thread, by the way.

    Nope.
Sorry, the Michel Delving Community Recording Society has determined that speaking of, or referring to, persons that have not yet aquired a nickname, that will, at some point in their life, be bestowed upon them by appropriate authorities, a nickname, is prohibited. If you wish to continue with erudition concerning such persons as "Saruman" or persons existing in the same "time" continuum as Saruman, it will be necessary that you refer only to past-tense events.

The nasty stain the burnt "fell" beast left at Pellenor fields, and by fell im not implying anything personal.
