    Re: Song Compilation

I've yet to finish transcribing it, but Mad World by Gary Jules fits within the octaves available (though unfortunately, is missing a couple of sharps since the high C scale has none).

As for the final fantasy victory theme ...
    -'s = quarters, no -'s = eigths

Oh god, why can't we just do 12345678 and have S1, C1, ect. instead of all these complicated letters?

Because it's easier to sight read. You have to convert S1 into whatever key you've implemented for it.

    But if you insist ...

    Dude, thats like 9412x harder.

I think we should all use the keymapping he posted.
Then nobody would have to fight about what keys are what.

No, because then someone else will come up with a new system, then there will be ***** fights on who's is better and all the little music codes will be posted in 1 or 2 different ways when there's about 50 different little codes to use...

Unless we can get an "official" keymapping.

The reason I have my keys the way I do is because I have chords that transcend an octave. You can't do that using the Shift and Control original keymapping. I'm a guitar player - take away my chord ability and I'm crippled.

People have been asking for the upper octave sharps/flats. What happens then? Do all these posting become obsolete because the mappings don't support that?

People have the right to use the keymapping they want but i think we should atleast use the number system when posting song compesitions to avoid confusion.

Well... yeah, probably. We'd have to figure out a new keymapping, and re-tab the songs. Personally, I'd wish for at least three full octaves (complete with sharps and flats), but not sure how I'd fit it all on the keyboard. I'm sure it could be figured out, though.

Yeah, that was the thought that came to mind when I redid the FF song - that everyone's keys are different, and that there should be a universal way of writing it down. Extra work, but no confusion.

    Re: Song Compilation

The default binds are junk, period. If you want to "learn" to play with them by all means do, but don't demand the op or replys to change his/her preferred method of playing/posting songs - there's a reason people use my binds and it's up to you to discover why.

Nothing against MalasRythem, but just posting a new unqualified "bind" and preaching it's praises does not do the community any good, just muddys an issue that was fairly ironed out in closed beta. But you are certainly welcome to use it and post songs in his preferred bind if you like it.

I researched these binds through hours of trial and error, networked in game, and got feedback throughout beta and dedicated myself to the /Music testing and improving. I spent countless days in closed playing, and people wanted to play like me, so I showed them the binds. It was those whom I met who first posted the binds (keln), and people quickly adopted them. So after I made detailed posts on why so people could understand.

I've requested Turbine change the default binds to something more suitable to playing (any binds, as long as there is no CTRL and SHIFT), and they still are keeping the worthless ones in for who knows what reason. And if/when turbine decides to add 5 accidentals, we can only hope they realize their binds are horrid and make a better default - if not, I will.

Regardless, this isn't about who's binds win, they are only keybinds for pete's sake. This is about giving the community the best bind to work with so they can improve playing if they are new to music, and play well if they are not.

So use what you want. But if its in a format you don't use, figure out how to convert it or wait for turbine to develop it for you.

EDIT: Where is the Sticky? This thread already has more attention than ANY thread (including other stickys) in the entire beta...

    Re: Song Compilation

    I'm of mixed mind here.

One one hand : I play a real piano keyboard (of questionable talent!) and would really LOVE to have official MIDI support to use a midi-keyboard instead of the very awkward 1-8 (& shifted1-8 & control1-8).

    On the Other hand:
This also falls into the Character Knowledge vs Player knowledge arguments for Role Players. Just because "I" might be able to play "dust in the wind", should all my "characters" be able to?

    On the (um... third hand):
And by the same token, if MIDI input IS supported, then it will be extremely difficult (by definition of MIDI) to exclude automated processes such as MIDI recording hardware or software from sending a stream of MIDI data (untouched by human hands) to the game.

And then we end up with everyone playing clones of "Dust In the Wind", "Classical Gas", or "Axel F" (you name it).

I've heard the same songs played in nearly exactly the same way in the beta and various videos. They are nice pretty little contemporary songs, but many are hardly original by any means, and how do they relate to the in-game lore and environment?

It's 'technically possible' to stream midi and it's going on in the beta, so now whenever I hear someone playing I'm asking myself... Are they "playing" live, or have they just launched a MIDI file stream to the program.

I think I'd rather hear some original tunes (even if played imperfectly) played live than any canned file/macros.

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

    Re: Song Compilation

Hmm, we've gotten off-topic (song compilations.) But I can't resist.

I use Psomm's keymapping because it reflects a piano keyboard. (And again, I've added the NUM1-NUM8 keys to the second octave for convenience.) But I think we should wait for the "big patch" before getting too worked up about keymappings. IF we get 3 octaves with all accidentals (which I fervently hope we do) the only way to map that to the 4 rows of keys on the kbd with accidentals on the row above naturals will be to break the second octave in half.

Add to that the possibility of abc notation (good for transferring scripts and easily readable but horrible for real-time playing) and the water gets muddier still.

As for the scripts versus live debate: People should know if we're playing a script or playing live. Assuming the game will support its own scripting mechanism, how about this? If a player is playing live, they get the little music animation that we have now. If they're playing a script, they get no animation. Simple to implement and lets others know at a glance who's playing live.

This gets stupid to have to unscramble everyone's songs they post up because they feel the key mapping they used was oh so freaking amazing. I know beggers can't be choosers, but **** the psomm format makes songs a thousand times easier for the majority of us to play and read. I hate having to sit around to put it back into that format when page 1 of this whole tread urges you to use that format for everyone's convinence.

Are you sure we're thinking of the right victory theme? :P There are several, after all. I'll recheck the notes

EDIT: Just double checked it, even set my keys to default so I know I'd be playing it 1:1 - it's correct. If it doesn't have a C or S next to it, it's just a regular 1-8. So if I have C76, that means C7 6, not C7 C6.
