    Arrow Mouse look toggle

Once again I'm beggin' the devs, maybe there is a kind person who could lean on that small part of code, please!

[edit]: Not as good as a good hot key toggle, but I finally found a way to bind the mouse steer to the keyboard.

    1) Open the \My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\lotro.keymap file with a text editor

    2) In the section below :

    Bindings
    [
    Main
    [

    Add the following line : CameraInstantMouseSteer [ User [ 0 DIK_Q ] ]

It will set the Q key as mouse steer, you still need to hold it down though. However it lowers the stress on the hand than having to use the mouse button.

You can change the Q to anything else replacing Q by the letter/key of your choice, be sure the chosen key isn't bound to any other functionality.

    Enjoy.

Have the devs ever commented on this? I know this has been asked for since release. Is it something with the code that prevents this feature being added?

A response about this from a dev would be great!

I'm not sure what you're asking for. How is it different from holding the right mouse button for mouse look?

This is a real show stopper.

I'm just starting out brand new and the camera style is so debilitating compared to other free look systems.

Every video game out these days usually at least allows the option.

I'm on the verge of purchasing a subscription but this is unfortunately too big of a gap to keep playing.

    Re: Mouse look toggle

I used to be a huge Mouse-Look Toggle fan until I started playing this game. At first it was bothersome but after a short period of time I quickly saw the advantages to this particular system. The fact is, there is a mouse-look toggle, it's the Right Mouse Button. Simply hold it in and move the mouse around. Depress and you can move the cursor.

    Unless I'm missing something?

The difference is that you have to hold it down, now, instead of just clicking to change modes. Holding a button down and moving the mouse around fatigues your wrist faster than click-move-click.

It doesn't bother me, personally, but I believe that is the argument at hand (heh).

Ok, I'll concede that I suppose but I really don't understand how moving the mouse while holding your finger down on a mouse button would really add all that extra stress to your wrist over moving the mouse without your finger pressed down. Seems to me that your wrist is going to do the same amount of work regardless.

Doesn't bother me either, as far as I'm concerned if its easy enough to add as an option then all the better for everyone. Just curious as to the real need for it is all. Thanks for the response.

I'm afraid I am going to have to agree here. Is the world coming to a point where people's wrists become "fatigued" while playing a video game? Honestly, the right click+move is more than enough. If anyone gets to complain about mouse restriction it is us laptop users. You wanna talk about click-move-click-move... Oh I'll tell you about click-move-click-move!

I felt that way once, too. Another 15 years of PC gaming changed my mind a little. It's never been consistently as bad as would move me to use a mouselook toggle, but I've felt a twinge back there and thought, "Oooo, that's what they're talking about. Time to lay off the mouse a bit."

It's not the wrist. It's the muscle and tendon running up the back of your forearm. The wrist isn't involved in moving the mouse much at all, that's all shoulder and elbow.

That said, I can't stand toggles.

DO WANT. Make the middle mouse button the toggle and the right mouse button the hold. Sometimes I want to be able to steer myself on long runs without having to hold a button down.

you're going to be moving the mouse anyway, even if you had a mouse look toggle option. Is it THAT horrible to turn on autorun and then hold the right mouse button down to steer? Seriously?

    Re: Mouse look toggle

If you have never experienced problems with your wrists or tendons, you just simply don't understand.

Having a toggle vs. holding down a key or a mouse button is the difference between being able to play for only an hour a day, and being able to play for a ten hour stretch without issues. UIs designed with 15 year-olds in mind don't accommodate us 30+ year-olds quite as well.

No, I'm not exaggerating. My wife is a gamer but has issues with her hands, so has to choose her games carefully. We are trying out LoTRO, but lack of a mouselook is looking to be a deal breaker for her. It may be back to WoW for us, simply because of this.

I want this. For me, it's partially a matter of being lazy, especially when roaming around the 'moors. I'll be running around for 5-10mins at a time, and holding down the right mouse button, while picking up and moving the mouse occasionally, does actually get annoying.

    Re: Mouse look toggle

Perma mouselook toggle with the right mouse button would be nice, but for me personally it's not a huge deal. If I'm going to be walking a long time I typically just autorun and use keyboard turning while I poke through my traits, inventory, or such. During combat it's mouselook all the way, there's no way to turn fast enough to be effective, especially when playing a tank and I need to be aware in 360 degrees. I often hold the left button during combat to watch for potential adds, in situations where I want to change my camera but not my facing.

The system works fairly well for what it does. A toggle option would be nice, but it's hardly game-breaking.

    Re: Mouse look toggle

I'll /sign for this. I was a big fan of mouse-steering toggles before LOTRO but quickly acclimated to LOTRO's system. I recently played a bit of Champions Online and the one thing they got right in that game was alternative control schemes including an option to not only toggle mouse looking, but an entire target selection scheme usable with mouselook.

If there's one thing I'd love to add here it would be that targeting scheme and at least the option of toggling mouselook.

    Re: Mouse look toggle

Coming from more than 2 years of DDO (which has a mouse-look toggle), I was disappointed to find that LOTRO didn't have one!

It's a pain in the backside, honestly.

I have had heaps of difficulty trying to adjust to moving while in combat.

    So...

Bumping as I somehow found a way to remap the mouse the steer button.

Still devs, how do we have to beg you to add this? It's been over a year and you do know it would lower the pain on some people's hand.

    Re: Mouse look toggle

If you have a G13, you can do it with a simple script:

    Code:
    function OnEvent(event, arg)
        if (event == "G_PRESSED" and arg == 25) then
            if IsMouseButtonPressed(3) then
                ReleaseMouseButton(3)
            else
                PressMouseButton(3)
            end
        end
    end

Thanks for taking the time to parse this, guess it will help some players.

I don't own a G13 nor intend to do so.

The devs that can do something about this issue should be ashamed not to even try to help people feel less pain while playing the game.

    Re: Mouse look toggle

/signed as well. Holding down the right button on long runs is a real pain, and my ability to twitch control with the keyboard keys is minimal. This seems like it would be a very easy fix to put in.

Someone mentioned autorun. What's the key for doing that?
